The one caveat is that it also depends on how many people made reservations earlier than yours! drsuba--it would appear that your 11 month out res was bested by folks who made them even earlier.
The one and only time I've been seated upstairs is when I made a PS that was only 6 months out. This was the first year we went in the early 90s. The seats were fine, but the first floor is better.
Each year we've gone thereafter (every trip but this past June), we make our PS as soon as we know our travel dates (minimum of 18 months in advance for us--our June 2003 PS has been made since August 01!). (In the old days, your PS for HDDR was tied to your room res--you change your room res, your PS for HDDR was cancelled and you had to re-book. This also played havoc with your early PS dates. Further, you couldn't book HDDR that far in advance unless you were an on property guest!) Now, you can make a PS for HDDR without having booked a room and may do so up to 2 years in advance (I believe).
As previously indicated, and to answer your question, you may pick up your tickets at the guest services desk at your on site hotel. If you are off-site, you pick up the tickets at the windows just outside the HDDR entrance. It doesn't matter when you pick up the tickets--7 days in advance, mid-week before, etc.--seats are, according to all of the CMs I've spoken to from dining, to GF guest services, to Polynesian concierge, to the HDDR window--assigned based upon the date of booking, end of story. Further, I was told this time around that if you modify your PS (change party #s, etc., a new number is assigned BUT the date of the original PS remains in tact).
You do, in fact, check in prior to the show at HDD. A CM will be on the front porch and will ask you to check-in and try to encourage you to take those family photos prior to the show. You can certainly decline that--then they also ask you to look at your seating assignments and they form two lines before the seating begins based upon those assignments.
I know. . .probably much more information than you ever thought you needed!
