I read the sticky faq but want to make sure I understood correctly.

I am recovering from knee surgery and my leg is currently locked straight. I read the sticky to say that the wheelchairs available for rental at the parks or loan at the resorts do not have a leg on them that can be put forward to keep my straight leg out in front of me? Please verify. We are at the Boardwalk if that matters.

If that is the case, does anyone have a good experience to share of working with a company that could provide a wheelchair where I can keep my leg locked directly in front of me?

Thanks,
Epcot Mom

I believe you are right in the fact that the legs do not lift on those chairs.

Check with a local medical supply store in your area. You might be able to rent one from them and take it with you and it be covered by your insurance if you have a script from your DR. Otherwise there are many companies in the FAQ's area that will also rent you a wheelchair with what you need.

Hi there! I was wondering if you found anything out about the wheelchairs that can have the leg propped up to the same level as you? I will be traveling with my family to WDW Nov. 5th and my sister broke her leg on sunday (We're doing everything in our power to make sure she can still go seeing as it's very soon) If you have found out anything, If you could let me know? That would be amazing and extremely helpful!

Thank you!
(: Sabrina

I didn't do any more research. I decided that since I would need a wheelchair in the airports too, I would just bring one from home. That way, I know it will meet my needs. I will try to notice if the chairs currently have the option to elevate and report back next week.

Best of luck. We figure it won't be our usual trip but it will be an adventure. Disney has always been very accommodating in the past when we have had atypical situations.

Hi and :welcome: to both DisBoards and disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including post #2 which deals extensively with mobility and/or stamina problems and discusses rentals..

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

Thank you so much for the help:)

& Epcot Mom, I hope you have a wonderful trip, Then again it's WDW how can it not be wonderful right? ;)

We have done Disney with sick kids, pregnant (twice) and Daddy in a wheelchair after hurting his foot the second day. All were great! Thanks for the well wishes, and right back at you! We have found the resorts to be very accommodating if there was something we needed to make our stay work better (step stools, etc). Just ask, they were happy to help.

Thanks also to all the great folks on this board to offer help to those trying to figure all this out! You add to the magic!

Hi there Epcot Mom!

Was wondering if you saw if they had leg lifts on the wheelchairs on your visit? If you could let me know that would be awesome!!

Thanks!!:)

The park and resort chairs can not elevate the legs. If you do not bring one from home, contact one of the rental places in the FAQs. They have better equipment that can meet your needs, they are easier to push than park and resort chairs and they cost less. Plus you will have it at your resort to use there.

As pp said, the legs don't lift. We did as someone earlier suggested and brought a chair from home. I then had it in the airports and everywhere we went. It worked out great, frankly. I never had to wait for someone to bring us a chair, plus, we knew it worked. I will say, travelling by plane and going through security were a breeze. People in those lines are always crazy but the workers tried to help as much as they could. In both airports, there were lines just for wheelchairs, which made it so the folks working them knew how to handle people in wheelchairs.

We did Food and Wine booths, which were a challange with the chair just because the tables were too high. I could however, easily get through the que. We also did Party for the Senses. The staff there was outstanding at helping us deal with the chair. They helped us find a table and even filled my wine glass for me a couple of times. They were really great.

Overall, it was much easier than I expected and found that being in a wheelchair didn't have any effect on the trip at all. Bringing it from home, to me, made it a seamless non-event!

Good luck and have fun!
