I had someone ask me for information on wheelchairs -
I called Disney and was told that those on the cruise ships are for emergency situations only but those on Castaway Island, they are there and are first come - first served - I was told that cruisers are encouraged to either bring their own or rent one locally.

So I did make phone calls to local Medical centers and found out the following.

Brevard Medical Center offers all types of wheelchairs to all the cruise ships ----for 7 days the fee is $100.00 which includes delivery to the cruise ship and pick up also. This comes to less than $15.00 a day which I believe is a great rate -

The phone number is locally 321-453-3370 and then 866-416-7383 for out of area.

If I can help any further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Always
Shirley

Shirley, your questioner can also get more rental info by posing on the disABILITIES board. A transport wheelchair costs about $350 to purchase, a decent option if it can be budgeted for. Then your cruisers will have it for on and off the planes, etc. We got ours from Youcan Toocan, a nice company. See my trip report on getting around the Magic.

P.S. Loved our package from the Perfect Gift, my nephew loved his Buzz watch.

Hey there - thanks for your information - put it into my folder for future use - anyhow this one particular case - the wheel chair was just needed in case of long walks etc so only interested in renting one which in their case, I could understand -
Thanks again.

I confess - it was me that asked Shirley about renting a wheelchair for my Mom. And I am even more embarassed to say the Disabilities Board didn't even occur to me. Mom is in her early 70's and is sometimes not too steady on her feet or gets tired easily and I just wanted to have something available to her if she needed it - before we got on the ship. In the 2+ years I have been reading these boards I didn't remember seeing the question asked so asked the only local person I know - Shirley.
This awesome lady found out the info for me and shared it with all of us - and I will share when I get back how the experience went. Thanks Shirley - you are a blessing!

glindamood, if you decide to use a chair on Castaway Cay, disembark a little early so you can get one with an umbrella mounted on it. I know a little about the wheelchairs from the trip when my kneecap popped off (I became a user of one of those emergency-situation wheelchairs!). The sand wheelchairs have very huge, thick tires...kind of hard to push, but it's nice to be able to get close to the water.

Barb, I'm curious about the quantity of the sand wheelchairs that get used. Our cruise was only 2/3 full, and there were a huge number of chairs that went unused at CC. Do you feel there are enough to supply everyone who wants one? Did you have to get off early just to get one? Is this a product that DCL needs a greater supply of?

this is good information to know. I will probably have to cancel my January cruise, and when I reschedule, I will need to know this info because i will probably take my Dad with us. Now, if i could just find out info about oxygen...

Shirley, you are such a sweetheart. I will let you know in a couple of months about this. I still have to work on my Dad and get him to agree! I will be canceling my January Cruise I think, so when i rebook, I will be adding him to the reservation if i can talk him into it! Thank you so much for the generous offer!

abitjaded,
There seemed to be plenty. The only reason to get off early would be if you want one with an umbrella. We didn't get one of those, but hubby just wheeled me into the shade on the beach so that worked out fine. Only problem was, the water looked so inviting that I was ready to CRAWL in! That was the only trip out of 26 where I didn't swim at CC.
