Wheelchairs in the Parks

This is specifically geared towards WDW Parks. My grandfather has a bum knee and so is unable to walk long distances for long and so the easiest thing to help him out is get him a wheelchair, which my aunt is borrowing from her church.

Now, he can still walk relatively well unassisted, and knowing him, there WILL be times he will choose not to use it to get into attractions and such. My question are:

A) if he decided that he wanted to stretch his legs and join the regular line without the wheelchair, can you park it in a certain designated area similar to how you would do with stroller?

B) if he does decide to join a Mainstream line with the wheelchair, can he have the option of transferring into a regular ride vehicle (if he can make the step down or whatever)?

C) And thirdly, can anyone provide me a link with an updated list of Mainstream line attractions please?

Thanks for all your help!!

Yes, he can park the wheelchair and walk.
I'm not sure what you mean by Mainstream line but if you mean sitting in the wheelchair in a regular line without going in the wheelchair line, I don't think so. I think if he's sitting in the wheel chair he has to use the wheel chair entrance. I most cases they just take you in through another door and sort of stick you in as if you had been waiting in line.

Yeah mainstream line I mean the regular lines that allow mobility devices to join the regular line.

A) Yes he can park his wheel chair with the strollers but the CM might move it to make room for other strollers or wheel chairs. keep in mind some lines are much longer then others ( soaring and Space are two that are long no matter what ) he might want to keep the wheel chair with him and use it as a walker

B) yes he can as long as he can get into the ride car and can ride safely he can go on what ever he wants. there are a few rides that have moving walk ways and can not be stopped peter pain flight and TTA are two I can think of other moving walk ways can be slower or stopped

C just about all lines at disney you can take a wheel chair in a few have steps in the line at this the CM will point your group to an alternative entrance ( Splash and tory story are 2 that are like this) some use the FP entrance ( even if you do not have one ) space is one of them) and some you go though the exit ( space ship earth and BTMRR are two that do this) This is not a complete list but there are not many rides that you can not take a wheel chair at lest most of the way thought the line.

The vast majority of queues at WDW are "mainstreamed" -- meaning the mobility device can be brought through the regular line. Only a very few attractions have alternate entrances for those in wheelchairs. There is more information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread pinned near the top of this forum.

Enjoy your vacation!

toy story mania is one ride that comes to mind that if he uses a wheelchair at a certain point just before stairs that wheelchairs are pulled off and have to use the special ride cars even if you can step into them most lines at WDW wheelchairs go in main line to either to the ride or where you get pull off to ride special cars. with a bum knee myself I would suggest that if he wants to walk while in line that he push his chair with him, that way if the wait is longer than planned he will have a place to sit if needed

Yes, if he wants to park the wheelchair and walk, he most certainly can. Ask the CMs where to park the wheelchair as they have separate areas (at least in MK) and really don't want WCs/ECVs parked with the strollers. For example on the one side of Fantasyland, they will have you park a WC/ECV near the exit area of Peter Pan. But they want strollers parked down near the Runpunzel bathrooms or by the Carousel. If you leave a stroller in front of Pan and the CM doesn't catch you before you leave, it's pretty much a guarantee that you will find your stroller has been moved. Likewise with a WC/ECV, if you leave if with the strollers, it will more than likely be moved. The CMs who are on stroller duty will move it to the WC/ECV area. So your best bet is ask the CMs (especially those working attractions, at the entrance!), they will tell you where to park.
