does anyone know if aquatica has any special wheelchairs that can go in the water. i would love ds(8) to be able to go into some of the kids play areas but they all seem to have shallow water around them. he would have his own chair but it is unsuitable for water.

Aquatica emailed me back and said they have no sand wheelchairs. Infact from a friend who just came back with a disabled child, she felt it not accessible much. There are stairs to the slide to view dolphins. Many stairs. Some of the slides require you to carry tubes.

The river with the current would be extremely difficult to get out for a child with little use of their legs. My friend who is an adult had difficulty and she has no disability. There is a lot of walking and pushing....

Based on her observation and a map she gave me of the parks with the stairs. We decided against it and now decide to go to Typhoon Lagoon. At least they have an elevator going to big slide (crusher gusher) have wheelchairs and have the coral reef with sharks and fish. Plus the lazy river and wave poolS! This sound more acessible!

This is really weird, honestly.

Discovery Cove, I remember specifically, offered special 'beach wheelchairs' with oversized tires for the sand. I'm pretty surprised that they don't offer them at Aquatica too.

When I was at Aquatica over the weekend, I did see one lady in a wheelchair--just a normal wheelchair. But it got me thinking... how does Aquatica get away with having such an inaccessible park? There are lots of stairs and no ramps on all the slides.. and the Roa's Rapids (fast 'lazy' river) would /definitely/ be difficult to get out of, I agree.

Then it got me thinking further... are ALL waterparks this wheelchair unfriendly? It's been several years since I went to Wet n' Wild, but I don't recall there being ramps at those slides either.

:confused3

Hmm.

Both my friend and I have been to Discovery Cove. That is why we were surprised that Aquatica was not built really accessible. They did say they would get sand wheelchairs but just not when...

There are a few things you can do. The beach, if you can push a normal wheelchair through it and the other river. Mayeb a couple slides?
