Wheelchair Resort Question

I've been to DisneyWorld several times over the past 10 years and have frequently stated at POR. While we've ben very happy with this resort, this is the first trip that my Mom is going to be tagging along. She is not handicapped but due to back issues has a problem walking long distances. I plan on getting a wheelchair to make the trip easier for her but am concerned about staying at POR due to the size of the place and the amount of walking that is required to get anywhere.

I am looking to see if anyone has any suggestions on other resorts that may be more compact or another resort that might have rooms closer to the front desk area. We prefer to stay away from the all stars because they tend to be pretty noisy and crowded no matter when you go.

Thanks in advance.

Why not see if you can just switch over to Port Oleans French Quarter. You are still in POR area and price range is the same. It is a nice, quaint resort and you can ask for a resort close to everything (but it is a smaller resort), just be sure that you tell them when you make the reservation that you need it close due to disabilities.

You can make the same request at POR too. Just make sure that they understand that it is for mobility issues.

We stayed at Coronado Springs this past August. They were extremely accommodating with the wheelchair situation.

Our room was in the Casitas (near the pool) which is completely ramped. The bus stop was across the parking lot from our room.

My suggestion - Coronado - based on their ability to deal with wheelchair issues without a problem.

I use a wheelchair alot and we just got back from the Yacht Club, may not be in your budget but I find it one of the best for accessibility. They even give you a comp wheelchair for the week. Last year our room request was close to the lobby. We had ground floor with a view of the wedding gazebo. This year we had 2nd floor parking lot view, but it was still not too bad of a location with dh pushing. We have also stayed at Poly but I am a little hesitant about that next time with all the monorail issues. The BC is the Yacht Club sister resort which would be find and seems more kid friendly etc.

por is our favorite resort and although large, we still wanted to go there. we went to por this past september. we had a party of 6. one of us was 87 years old, the other is handicapped and needed a scooter for the parks/resort and wheelchair for the room. we needed something close by to everything since my grandmother can walk but cant do long distances, and my aunt cant walk at all.

when we booked our rooms, we had our aaa agent book our room through special reservations. we requested 2 rooms in building 14 alligator bayou, 1st floor standard room. what is nice about building 14, is that it is so closest building to the food court/registration/gameroom, and very close to the main bus stop. in matter of fact, we only had to cut through a small parking lot to get to the bus stop. everything was so close.

we had to have a room with a roll in shower for my aunt. we were thrilled with the rooms (they gave us 1403 and 1404).

my suggestion to you is when you book, book through special reservations and ask for building 14, first floor. you'll be right next to the main building and super close to the bus stop.

When you make your reservations, make your requests for your special needs. We just got back from OKW. We request a first floor room near a bus stop. We do not need a HA room. We let them know it is for medical reasons. They have worked with us for our 2 trips in 2009.

We did check about a month before we arrived to make sure that all the information was documented. Then a week before, we called the resort to reconfirm our needs.

We just returned from POR and had rooms 1403 and 1404. Ground floor in building 14. One of the party was in a wheelchair and we found this arrangement perfect. We were right next to the lobby and as close as one could get to the bus stop. We brought our car and had disabled parking right out side the door. The rooms connect. One had a low king size bed with a roll in shower and the other had two doubles. The rooms were fantastic and we were very happy there. We had requested a ground floor near the lobby. We wanted a disabled room but were told none were open. Imagine our happy surprise to find out we got these two connected rooms which were perfect! Have fun!

I'm interested in the feedback too. I'm considering staying here with my Mom in November, who has fibromyalgia....I'm thinking that I'll rent a scooter from Walker Mobility and renting a car so we don't have to worry about taking the scooter on the buses. I'm thinking that the Mansion section might be best as it seems they have elevators so she doesn't have to worry about stairs. Alligator Bayou has only walkups right?
