Wheelchair Rental for Grand Californian and rest of resort.

We’ll be needing a wheelchair rental (possibly powered) for my husband on our upcoming trip. Is it possible to rent one at the Grand Californian that we can take into the parks as well?

The issue, sadly, is that my husband was found with a glioblastoma. The timing works out that our trip will be during the four week rest period between ending radiation and going back on chemotherapy. Our doctors all say that taking a trip is fine, and a good idea, but we have no idea how much fatigue he’ll have from the radiation. I’m debating whether to see if we can get a handicapped room. He doesn’t need help for that walking around the hotel room, but a shower with a grab bar and seat would be good. My main concern is just getting from the hotel to the parks and back. We want to make the most of whatever time he has left.

The Grand Californian has a limited supply of handicapped rooms, you can select this option when searching for room availability.

ScooterBug is the official vendor for wheelchairs and ECVs at the Disneyland resort, including the hotels. The advantage is that you can pick up your rental right from Bell Services (and return to Bell Services at the end of your trip).

You can typically get wheelchairs and ECVs cheaper from offsite vendors, but you have to make arrangements to meet them at your hotel for drop off and pickup.

Regardless of whether you rent from ScooterBug or an outside vendor at the Grand Californian, you can take your wheelchair/ECV anywhere on Disney property or even offsite. If you rent in the parks you're limited to using them in either park or Downtown Disney and can't take them into the hotels or off Disney property.

Whichever option you choose, be sure to reserve your rental before your trip since vendors can book up.

We had to rent a wheelchair for the last day of our trip and tried for the rentals at Disneyland but they don't take reservations, first come first served and couldn't guarantee we'd get one. We rented from One stop moblility, they are located behind the Camelot Inn across from Disneyland. very reasonable and clean. Of course one we reserved and paid for it we found out our hotel, Marriott Springhill Suites Maingate, would have gotten one delivered for us! Oh well!

I can't offer any suggestions about an WC/ECV (though I would recommend getting the ECV, pushing a regular WC all day is difficult). I wish you and your husband all the best and have a wonderful trip to DL!

@GaryDis I have no useful information to add about wheelchairs and scooters, but I want to say I hope that you and your hubby have the most magical Disneyland trip ever!

Wow, I'm so sorry you and your family are going through this. That's tough.

If you decide to go with an ECV, we've rented from Scooterbug in the past because they drop off and pick up at the Disney hotels without you having to be there. However, I don't recommend them. Last time we rented from them the first one we got had some kind of issue that made it die all the time, it took them until the next day at their regular drop off time to replace it, then the one they gave us wasn't running correctly, it was S-L-O-W.

Most recently we rented from D&R Mobility right on Harbor. We decided to pick it up because we were there a day early and I wanted to be sure it worked correctly. No problems at all. For the return, I asked them to pick it up from the DLH. I just called them when we were done with it and they picked it up in the valet area less than 30 minutes later. Super convenient.

Hope your trip is everything it can be!

It’s disappointing to hear you had such troubles with Scooterbug.

When you picked it up from D&R, were they able to help you get it into your car? Right now, I have arthritis and a sprain affecting my thumbs. That wouldn’t stop me from pushing a wheelchair, and hopefully I’ll be recovered by then, but it worries me if I’d have to load and unload it.

I rent from Gold Mobility. They are fantastic. I highly suggest a scooter. It will make the trip mobility challenge free. First time user? practice a bit around the resort. Very easy to get the hang of quickly!

This was an ECV, so you wouldn't be putting it in a car unless you were driving a van with a lift. They're big and they're heavy. We picked up after hours, and they just had it sitting outside the location ready to go. They left the key with the hotel where their storefront is.

Their location is on Harbor about a block from the entrance to Disneyland, so we just walked over there and rode the scooter back to the DLH via the esplanade and DTD.

It also came with a port for the a phone charger, which was very convenient.
