Wheelchair personalizing

Here's my power chair license plate:

I use a Jazz wheelchair bag from Adaptable Designs. It's truly the best wheelchair bag I've ever owned. Roomy compartments. Especially now that I'm back at my college classes, and need to tote books, plus my three-ring binder around. It easily snaps on and off from my manual wheelchair when I don't want to remove the curved extension handle.

There are some great looking wheelchairs in this thread! :thumbsup2

When I go to Disney, I have to use a cane to help keep my knee from killing me with all of the walking. On my first night there, I ran into a little problem. My cane is black metal. So during the nightime, no-one noticed my cane. Everyone kept kicking it out from under me. Obviously this wasn't going to work.

Before my next trip, I did a little research and found the perfect product! EL Wire. I bought the pre-made kit. I chose blue wire. It runs off of AA batteries. I attached the battery box near the top of the cane and spiraled the wire down the lenghth of the cane. Using it just after dark, a set of batteries lasted most of the week.

It worked just like I hoped. Everyone saw my cane from a distance. Most people loved it! I received tons of compliments on it.

So I figured I'd pass it along here to add another idea for your chairs.

I'm afraid I haven't read all the replies, so I'm sorry if I repeat what anyone else has said here, but there are loads of things you can do to personalise a wheelchair!

If you're looking for temporary decorations, ribbons, beads, tinsel etc are all great for wrapping around the frame, the wheel spokes etc.; just make sure you don't risk jamming any moving parts.

If you want more permenant decor, you can make seat covers out of cool fabric, in a sort of 'pillowcase' style (so they slip on over the back and seat, and can be removed for washing). You might also be able to paint the frame, but make sure that this won't invalidate any warrantee first. If you do paint it, make sure to cover all the parts you don't want to paint, then finish it off with a few layers of something protective (a bike shop should be able to reccommend something) to stop it chipping.

Hope this helps! :thumbsup2

Hi,
Post #31 is the finished product of our painted wheelchair :)
I also have some photo's of some covers that a Big Giver made for Becca for her upcoming Wish Trip,
I dont have time to post the covers to this post at the moment, but if anyone would like to see them they are posted on my pre trip link below, they are awesome!

I saw the pictures you posted of the covers and other things you got. They are really nice and your DD looked really tickled to have them.

One caution I want to point out for covering the seat (the part of the wheelchair you sit on). Some seats have Velcro on the bottom to hold it onto the seat frame. If you cover that, the seat might shift or slip as the person is getting in or out. So be careful of that, especially if the person is not able to stand on their own and needs help getting in and out.

Sorry I lost the pictures of my power chair and how I personalized it. Here they are:

This is my joystick controller that was decorated by one of the counselors at the summer camp that Dan and I go to, for kids and adults with disabilities. This was taken at the camp, at the Wednesday night dance:

Here's the back of my power chair with the license plate that my dad put on my chair after the first week I had it:

Here's my manual wheelchair. I've been wondering if there was some way where I could attach a miniature license plate to the back. Either to the sling-seat, or the wheelchair back:
