Wheelchair Accident at MK

Would you cut in front on an 18 wheeler in your car? No because you know the truck cannot stop on a dime.

No, I don't, but the vast majority of 18 wheelers drive so that if someone does, they can avoid an accident. They are by in large the best collection of drivers on the road and per capita, are in the least accidents. Why, because they know accident with their vehicles can be the most hazardous.

Hence, the comparison to accidents between pedestrians and EVCs.

To get respect, you must give respect.

What you think you are entitled to is irrelevant. You are in a vehicle that can (and has) caused physical damage because of your own impatience. You choose not to accept more responsibility when you have the greatest power. That is wreckless and selfish.

You talk of impatience, it has nothing to do with it, I'm very patient but patience doesn't cover the impatience of others who decide to jump in front of me, or who abruptly stop in front of me,that's something patience cannot cure unless you put a 5 foot bubble around me.I could hang 10 foot in back of the people in front of me but when I do, that 10 foot is immediately filled by people cutting in front. You can't put the sole blame on us, you have a responsibility too

Patience has everything to do with it and you have to have more than the everyone else.....why, because you are controlling the machine that can cause serious harm.

I have visited WDW many times with EVC users and sometimes we had to do things that weren't the most convenient. Don't try and tell me it can't be done.

Yes, sometimes it means you have to leave shows early, or stay and be the last person to leave. Sometimes it means you can't leave right after Illuminations. Yes, you have to give a few feet between you and the person in front of you, and people will undoubtedly try and fill that space...and you have to continue to leave it because if you don't you are increasing the probability of an accident.

I am not saying EVC users accept 100% of the responsibility and are at fault in every single accident every single time, BUT if you agree that you should accept the majority of the responsibility why do you want to argue about whether you should take 60% or 80% of the responsibility?

Isn't it just easier to expect that some people will accept none, and since you are on the machine that can cuase harm, already have planned to take longer than everyone else and are willing to go out of your way, just pull over and wait or just leave 4' between your chair and the person in front of you.

Soo, we should totally inconvenience ourselves because we are unable to walk. Talk about us being selfish. We have to leave early or wait forever to convenience you. No I'm sorry not going to happen, I'm not going to have my young child miss things and suffer long waits because you don't want to be aware of your suroundings. Why would I go on vacation if I have to cater to everyone else? All of this can be avoided if people take 2 secs out of their precious time to think one thing... "these things don't stop on a dime", ill do my best not to hit you if you do your best not to get hit.

I got hit, too. On purpose. Twice. Didn't begrudge them for the wheelchair...just begrudge them for being a bung hole.

Honestly if someone hit me twice in a wheelchair like that so that I knew it was on purpose the second time I would "accidentally" fall backwards and hit the person...HARD

No, you should leave early or stay late because your machine can cause serious harm.

No I'm sorry not going to happen

Oh, I know. You won't stop. You don't care. That is what bothers me.

I don't expect anything to change, but It doesn't mean I have to like it either. I have been on both sides and seen it from both angles (previous video of my daughter almost getting ran over by someone on an EVC), but god forbid you accept the proper responsibility for the power you have been privelaged with. It's much easier to just blame everything on everyone else.

I'm not going to have my young child miss things and suffer long waits because you don't want to be aware of your suroundings.

And you're not inpatient right?

All of this can be avoided if people take 2 secs out of their precious time to think one thing... "these things don't stop on a dime", ill do my best not to hit you if you do your best not to get hit.

No you won't. You won't do your best at all. You'll do your best as long as it doesn't inconvenience you. That is wreckless and selfish, which is what I have said all along.

First, you don't know me.
I'm patient to a fault, but I'm not going to cater to you because you are too lazy to be aware of your surroundings. People like you think because we are immobile, we can be bullied and demonized to fit your desires. Sorry, my legs are crippled not my will. And for you to have the audacity to say we are all impatient because people fail to give us the same respect you so desire to have is atrocious.

Why do you keep trying to tell me how I think when I am telling exactly how I think. I am not saying you are all inpatient. I am saying YOU are inpatient because YOU are not willing to incovenience YOURSELF to reduce congestion and decrease the liklehood of an accident.

I don't want you to cater to me and I am certainly not trying to bully you. All I ask is that you accept the most responsibility since you have the most power. My only incident with any person on an EVC or when I have been with people on an EVC with a pedestrian was when the lady almost ran over my daughter....who was two and didn't quite think to look for a woman in her 50's in a motorized cart with a young girl on her lap speeding up a ramp as she was playing on a children's playground. Outside of that, I have never had any issues because I am well aware when those machine are near me and my family and when I am with an EVC, we take proper precautions and have been lucky to not have anyhing too out of the ordinary happen.

You want to feel like you have no options. You want to play the victim in a situation where you have all much of the power and can make decisions to avoid such issues. You choose not to make those decisions, I get it.

:thumbsup2

Again refusing to take responsibilty for your own awareness. It's all on the guy on the machine. Gotcha! Nevermind a simpler solution is just to be aware of your surroundings.nope gotta wait 40 mins here because sunshine over there can't logically think "oh there's an evc behind me, let me just make sure I do my little, tiny part keeping my distance and all will be well."

I could be wrong but I'm thinking LSUfan is saying that people in ECV's and wheelchairs should consider waiting for the crowd to thin out before leaving a crowded park or arriving early. Perhaps that's what he meant by patience?

I've toured the park in a wheelchair. I remember the unpleasantness of trying to leave Fantasmic after the show ended. It was a madhouse. We TOTALLY should've waited for the crowd to thin instead of trying to get out with the masses. I was so afraid of not only whacking someone in the leg/ankle, but I was constantly getting whacked in my own foot (which was up and wrapped in ace bandage). Gave me a new appreciation for those in wheelchairs and ECV's. I tend to be very heads up now when I tour, watching for not only chairs and strollers, but also stupid people on foot who just stop in the middle of a path.

A few years ago in Mousegears I had a woman with one of those massive SUV sized strollers ram right into my leg and despite my scream (like a B Movie star scream) she proceeded to continue mowing right over my foot. I dropped to the floor, clutching my foot (which was bruised and cut) and her husband comes running over and the two of them literally RAN FOR THEIR LIVES out of the store. Jerks.

So, moral of the story...people suck. Watch out for them, whether you are on foot or in a conveyance devise or pushing a stroller. Try to put yourself in the best possible situation to avoid either being mowed down, or mowing others down.

See you get it. And no, lsu is saying that no matter where we are if its crowded we should just pull over and wait. Exiting an attraction is a given, we have to wait because everyone flocks to the exit

I wanted to punch them, quite honestly. But my DH, who of course didn't get hit and have the layer of skin torn off his leg and bleeding into his shoe, told me to calm down.

It bruised up the next day, really bad, and was quite sore. I still have the scar where the skin had gotten scraped off.

I would've let it go if they would have said they were sorry, or asked if they could have gone around, but honestly, it was a slow day at AK- either side of us had plently of room to pass (on the big bridge near Asia)...so I had to spend my birthday limping and bleeding. My DH was a bung hole about it, too, come to think of it. I should've probably punched him as well. ;)

I, for the most part, agree with him. Wherever you are, if it's crowded enough that you could potentially injure yourself or others by joining the flow of traffic, pull over and wait (I include foot traffic in this as well).
PS...I've also got a CDL, and have driven trucks. These days I tend to be driving a truck and hauling a horse trailer. If the going is sketchy, I'll either wait or find an alternate route.

Ok you've been to wdw. When does the crowds ever thin out?
Ps I worked for a dumping company with a cdl also, sometime you can't get an alternate route and you have time constraints. People like cars on the road have a responsibility to be aware.

That is exactly what I was saying.

This is what we have done as well. We made sure to arrive early, and when a show had ended, we made sure we didn't rush to the location or park exit and it makes things MUCH smoother. Yeah, it adds some time, but was very worth it in our opinion.

Upon park exit, we always made sue to take the more "scenic" exit as well and not just straight and fast to the exit. Yeah, we always had people cut in front of us, but we were going slow enough, in less traffic on a less trafficed route and it wasn't an issue. Some crowded places are impossible to avoid, but if you can avoid them at the peak times, it makes it easier. Evenetually, everyone has to exit the ampitheater for Fantasmic, but not everyone has to do it as soon as the show ends.

I tend to be very heads up now when I tour, watching for not only chairs and strollers, but also stupid people on foot who just stop in the middle of a path.

Me as well. It certainly helps to see things from both sides. Like I mentioned, up until the point that my daughter was almost run over, I never even noticed all this "wrecklessness" people claim about, but since that day I have more observant. I have started notinc in other places other than just WDW as well and it is my observsation that it is just more prevelant at WDW than other places. My guess is because more people rent them there (that normally do not have/use them).

So, moral of the story...people suck. Watch out for them, whether you are on foot or in a conveyance devise or pushing a stroller. Try to put yourself in the best possible situation to avoid either being mowed down, or mowing others down.

I certainly agree. My only addition and/or change to this stance is that those who are in control of the vehicle that can cause the most harm should bare more responsibility, even when it isn't fair, because it is more safe.

That standpoint comes from my cycling and running background where just about every day my life is in the hands of so many drivers as I train on roads and highways. I believe runners, cyclists and drivers should all follow traffic laws, but it would be naive of me to think everyone does. I can do my part, can teahc others to do theirs, but ultimately, as I accept more responsibility than pedestrians when I drive because my mistake can kill them. It isn't fair, but it's safe.

The same analogy works for boaters (the bigger the boat, the safer the operators usually are), cars/trucks/RVs/deliver trucks, etc. The difference is, in those examples, the operators of the largest vehicles which can cause the most damage and harm have extensive training on how to operate their vehicles safely and defensively. All you need is some cash and an ID to rent an EVC.

OK, just a reminder, we do not live in Sparta, we do not throw people off the cliff, so can we all be a bit considered to each other?
I think suggesting for people in ECV to leave later or come earlier is ridiculous, then all the strollers should follow this advice as well because they can cause harm as well.
Point is watch out for people, no matter walking or riding and this is it.
:confused3

Once at Wal Mart I saw a woman who got hit by an EVC try and take the key out of the EVC that hit her and throw it across the store.

It was sad......but funny.

By your logic, here's how my day would go... 9:00 opening oops we got to wait till the influx of people go through hope we can make our 9:45 aft at the castle! 30 min later, we got 15 mins till our are!
