What's your vacation budget?

Well Last year was our 1st time at WDW, I am a single mom of three. Our vacation ran me $6000 that was including everything. Down to housekeeping tips and tips for taxi's etc. $1500 of that was airfare. Plus since this was my kids 1st trip there I did want to go all out. So we stayed on site/value did make overs for everyone. Had dinning plan. This year I am hoping to keep it under $4200 thats my budget so far. We are taking a trip next month to Vegas just for 4 days and that will only run me about $1500. I say I use about 15% of my income for vacations. Vacations have always been important to me, def. time to reconnect as a family and relax. Would love to take a cruise but my kids are not going for it. I can hope.

It depends on where we are going. But usually anywhere from $1000-5000 dollars for a week to 10 days.

One thing we have done for Disneyworld vacations is to buy a 10 day park-hopper, plus water parks and more, with no expiration tickets, Now this does sound expensive, but we make it last for a minumum for 3 trips. So one trip will be very expensive , but the next 2 trips we only pay for hotel and food. We also rat a lot in our room to cut cost. We are a family of 3. We ate on the DDP before my daughter turned 10. If I had kids under 10 then that;s the way to go!

Actually... the 2k is EVERYTHING, however... it is only me and my 4yr old.... this year our 2k is paying for us to drive to miami, stay 3nights in a luxury hotel (friends wedding) and then pay for us to have a 7night stay, value, no park hoppers and basic dining plan. It also budgets our spending money (which will be small as our meals are paid for and i dont shop much at Disney cuz its too expensive for my taste)

2k is a lot to me, being a single parent. And we only vacation to Disney every other year. :confused3

I'm not sure why the 4 or 5 K people are mentioning is so shocking to you for families of 4, when your family of 2 (1.5 really) is 2K? Isn't that pretty much the same budget? Higher really. :confused3

For us, 4K doesn't even cover a bare bones trip. We just went and spent more than that. We stayed at POP on free QP dining and spent nothing extra on food (had credits left over even feeding two teenaged boys), 4 5-day adult passes without hoppers, no souveniers, no rental car, free pet sitting, airport parking with a good coupon. However, we fly across the country and travel during school holidays. We do WDW once every 10 years.

I'm always amazed that people spend so little! For us, someplace like WDW depends on airfare. We consider ourselves budget travelers generally though.

It's hard to put a set amount on each trip. This year's vacation budget is 3K, which is down quite a bit from previous years (the max I've ever spent is 25%, the least was about 5%). But because I share rooms with my mom or boyfriend, we are able to do more with less. I sort of plan the first trip, see what I have left, then plan another if I can.

Our 7 night Myrtle Beach trip will cost me $400. Half a room, 3 inexpensive meals out and we'll make the rest of what we need in the room's kitchen with my regular grocery money.

I have $1200 for NYC. 6 nights in a hotel somewhere probably outside the city (5 if we can't get a room deal), subway pass, free amtrak tickets to get there (CC promo) and we already have wicked tickets. My employee pass gets us into several attractions for free.

That leaves 1400 for an off season cruise. I have a $200 credit with Carnival. This is my tricky one because that is barely squeezing by and I have to pay per person instead of per room.

But anyway, my vacation style is bare bones get me out of town multiple times even if I have to pack my own lunch.

My vacation budget varies on the year. 2010 was a busy vacation year, we did 2 trips to Disneyworld and 1 trip to Hawaii. I spent around $6,000 total. I own a timeshare so our accomodation costs were minimal and we got some incredible flight deals. We were also able to redeem Airmiles in Canada for Disney tickets and Universal tickets.

In 2011, we are spending 5 days skiing - my best friend's inlaws own a condo at a ski lodge so we get to stay for free and my son is 5 so he skis free. Then we are going to Disney in November. I expect these 2 trips to be $2,500 total. I have the flights for the ski trip already bought and I have all our spending money for Disney in an USD bank account and we have our Disney tickets from Airmiles already. I figure all I have to do is find a good flight deal (anything under $500 to Orlando is a deal for me) and great car rental deal (I am budgeting $200 for the week).

I am a single mom with one child. We will also do some camping this summer too so our total vacation budget for 2011 will be around $3,000. It truly varies so much depending on what we want to do and where we want to go. 2012 will probably be a low dollar vacation budget year too. My son is into hockey now so I expect that our vacation budget will take a big hit to cover all the travel costs that hockey creates.:rotfl:

Thats not who I was shocked at, I was shocked people were saying they spend $10 - 26k on vacations per year.... I was not judging but that is an extreme amount to me considering i am a single parent....

I have no idea why im getting attacked for being shocked at this, it would be amazing to be able to do that, but its a LOT of money to me.

Ya but they could be pulling 100, 150 or 200K a year so their percentages would match up better.

This past trip (Oct 2010) was about $8500 total (including everything, souvenirs, food etc) We (5 of us-2 adults, 3 kids- though 2 of those kids are considered adults for pricing) went for 7 nights 8 days, stayed at the Fort Wilderness Cabins, and paid for DDP. This was with a 40% off room code too. But we hadnt been in 6 years and it was our youngests first WDW trip so we kind of went crazy.

That being said, next trip will be about $5500 total, souvenirs etc included. We will probably go for one day less, will not have stroller rental costs, will hopefully be staying at ASMu family suites, and go during free dining. Here's hoping they have free dining in 2012! Cannot wait to go back!:goodvibes

This year for WDW we are spending $2300ish for everything dog kennel and all for 9 nights 4ppl...But that inludes the free flights we got from friends. Last year, for a 5 nt trip 2 ppl we spent around $1500. The year before we spent around $1800 for a 9 nt stay. We always travel with deals and go as cheap as possible. That way we go more paces. :goodvibes

You're not seeing the big picture. Don't compare your vacationing style to someone who is older, more established and with dual incomes (or maybe one really fantastic income). It took a lot of years with no vacation or just visiting relatives before we reached the stage where we can spend more on our leisure pastimes.

A weekend camping on the beach sounds like a lot of fun. I'll bet that your child will look back at that memory with fondness in the future. And that's what a family vacation should be all about. Not about how many dollars you spent! :)

That's the truth....
When my kids were little, dh wasn't making as much and I worked part time. Our vacations were camping, trips to Disneyland (staying on Harbor BLVD and eating in our room) and trips to see family. Lots of fun and pretty cheap. The last few years, dh income has gone up, we have 2 timeshares now and have vacationed alot more upscale.

Now we are back to budgeting-one kid in college and will have 2 kids in Catholic HS, so we are broke again (despite me working full time)

What we can afford changes, but we'll vacation regardless....whether it's going to Disney and staying in a timeshare onsite or camping at the beach!

Our budget is about $2000/year. We bought into DVC in 1998 when the kids were 2,3 and 5. It has turned out to be an indredible way to take vacations that would normally cost 5000-6000 per year. Some years when we didn't want to go back to Orlando, we rented the points and used the money to take a vacation someplace else. In the 13 years though, I've only done that twice!!!

It all depends for us. Our new vacation policy is this: Every other year, we do a big vacation, and every other year we do a super-budget vacation. This year, we're spending a week at the beach for around $1200 (or less). Next year, I'm already pricing out our Disney vacation. It will run around $6500 for 6 nights at the Wilderness Lodge with tickets and deluxe dining for 2 adults/2 kids. But when I budget for a vacation, I include EVERYTHING...airfare, tips for ME drivers/airport porters/mousekeeping, the Disney hotel/ticket/dining package, souvenirs, Photopass CD, EVERYTHING. And I usually come home with money left over. Next year's trip will be something new as my parents are coming along. They are paying for themselves, but I'm going to pay for the PP CD and for a surprise (either Wishes Dessert party or a fireworks cruise) for the families for one night.

We have a $5000 annual vacation budget. That is all we ever spend. Some years we have a ton of awesome trips, some years one BIG trip. The travel account has the ability to "save" money, but not to borrow money. So if we want to do something expensive, we can.

We like to travel and often do so on the cheap. Typically, we can get at least one flight free (using miles), we have no real airline loyalty, and luckily live near a couple of large airports. We try and find hotels under $100 per night or $125 with breakfast; we are very successful with that price range. We never stay in low-level hotels, we just look for awesome deals.

A couple examples: Marriott Renaissance with breakfast in DC in April 2010, we stayed 4 nights for $89 a night. We took cheap Southwest flights, under $200 per person and then took the Metro for transportation. Nearly all our entertainment was free (museums) and we visited the Whole foods for some room food, and ate at inexpensive restaurants or museum cafeterias. I think we spent $6 on a souvenir at the Supreme Court gift shop.

The best deal however was our 2005 winter trip to Sweden--we left on 26 December. We flew into Stockholm and home from Copenhagen--we booked an SAS special including taxes for $300 roundtrip per person. Then we found a $38 a night hotel rate at the Scandic chain. We spent 14 nights, in various Scandic's throughout Sweden/Norway/Denmark, never spending more than $50 including tax.

We had a rental car for the middle 7 days from Avis, for $250. (Basically, we did 3 nights in Stockholm--picked up the rental car, then drove around Sweden/Norway--then back to Stockholm where we dropped off the rental car and flew to Copenhagen for the last 4 nights. It sounds confusing, but it was the best route for use based on some visiting obligations.)

Our only other costs were food. Since nearly every European hotel includes a BIG breakfast, we were covered for breakfast. Honestly, we ate so much for breakfast, no on wanted lunch--just a snack. Dinners were eaten at fancy restaurants if we wanted or one night at Burger King (because it sounded good). All in we spent less than $3000, including our shopping.

For our family, travel is not about how much money we spend; but is about the experience. If find a super cheap airfare deal, or travelzoo hotel deal, we will investigate the other costs and often times plan a trip. We have been to many places, that are considered "luxury" destinations; but they were definitely done on a "beer budget".

One of my favorite hotels is typically a $400-500 a night Fairmont hotel. Yet, I have been able to stay there 4 times for less than $100 a night. The hotel amenities are just as nice, if not nicer, at $100 than they are at $400.

Disney is a little harder to get fabulous deals, since they are pretty consistent in their pricing. Also the growing number of home-schoolers and kids with year round school schedules has changed how Disney prices their low seasons. Yet we still find deals.

We have a small family, use dreams unlimited and ALWAYS spend around 5000.00 dollars. No matter if we use 40% off or not. It just seems to come up to this amount. Sometimes we take 2 adults with 2 kids and other times 2 adults with one child. Still comes up the five thousand dollars.:scared1::scared1::scared1:

I was in Vegas over the New Year's holiday, dh saw a really pretty watch in a jewelry store in one of the hotels so we wandered in to check it out. Ask the salesman the price on the watch....$40,000 bucks. LOL He mentioned that the watch was on sale. :rotfl:

I've learned that when it comes to money, "extreme" is subjective.

;)

We budget about $6k per year (separate account that gets $500/month put in). Sometimes we use every penny, other times there is some left that we'll carry over to the next trip.

This year we have a Hawaii trip planned that will use up about $5k of it (free airfare and some hotel nights), and DH is taking our boys fishing for a week in Canada which is about $2k.

Older DS will be going to college in 2 years, so I'm guessing we'll be broke and better enjoy this year and next.

Disney....we've been 3 times....family of 5.

1st was POP 2 rooms DDP and around $3k inc. airfare.

2nd was Poly with 40% code + DDP and air <$4k.

3rd was offsite. 8 days 7 nights WH condo. No DP. Drove. <$2500. Followed by 1 week at Anna Maria Island for $1500 total.

We just went to Boyne Mountain Michigan Skiing. Haven't totaled receipts but my spreadsheet before we left came to ~ $2k 4 days/nights. Skiing, lessons, rentals, meals, cottage rental.

The kids are now in love with skiing so we'll see what happens there. Skiing makes WDW look like a deal.

I'm going for girls weekend to St Pete beach next weekend. Fri-Sun. Flight, hotel + spending money will be $500 total.

We went for a week in August to Grand Haven MI in a little cottage and spent ~ $1k for the week half meals out half home and fun beach hiking and biking days.

We also try to camp 2-3 times in summer [we have a boat]....usually runs around $200 for each weekend.

Hubby and I take a mini trip every year either 5nights Mexico or 2 weekends at B&Bs....depending on what other vacation we've done that year we spend $500-$2000.

I love to travel.

Trish
