What's your side job?

Interesting. The insurance the leagues here have only cover volunteer officials. If you accept pay, you are expected to buy your own insurance.
My boys were soccer referees and they never had to pay for insurance. My one regret is not attending the classes when my oldest did this, I would have enjoyed being a ref.

My 2nd job is a hospital unit clerk on the L&D unit on the weekends. That usually puts me working 7 days a week one week, 6 days a week the next 2 weeks.

Were they paid or volunteers? Volunteers are normally covered under the league insurance. Those who accept pay are expected to provide their own insurance.

I play Tic Tac Toe on the side for extra money. The national tournaments are pretty lucrative.

I’m technically a retired teacher. I sub all the time now. This is the gravy period of my life. It won’t last forever but it’s nice for now.

Not here in PA. My husband is a paid ref for soccer, baseball and basketball for a few local clubs. They all cover the refs.

My older son reffed from around 13 years old through high school.

With my younger son close to finishing his soccer career (he’ll be a senior this fall), I thought it would be a good time to get certified. Helps me keep in shape and gives a little something back to the sport my boys played for their whole life. And a little extra pocket change is nice too 😉

That's a nice perk. Not sure the clubs can afford that here. We have had a huge drop off in the number of kids playing all youth sports here. Same reason they are closing schools here, the demographics have changed. The five local Soccer Clubs didn't have enough kids to be viable anymore, they merged into one club after the 2019 season. Oh, and they are no longer a Soccer Club, they are a "Futbol" Club, LOL>

In 3 months I will have a 2nd job that is one night a week.
My DD18 works at the same center she’s trained at the last 7 years and when she goes to college I’m taking over one of her nights. Then when she comes home from college she’ll work and I won’t. So I’m basically a place holder for her, and I really like the owner of the business and he needed the help with my DD and another 18yr old leaving for college so I’m doing this for him too. It’ll be fun - I’m looking forward to it.

How would they get any refs to show up if they had to pay expenses? Maybe if they paid $400 to $500 a game a few would show up but anything less than that forget about it.

What expenses? Most youth sports here rely on volunteer officials doing games in the league they live in. They are never more than a few miles from home.

Volunteer? Seriously? They would never get anyone in Puget Sound to show up unless they paid big cash. Many high school games are canceled because the for profit youth sports clubs are willing to pay refs $500 per game. The high schools in the lower income districts can't afford to pay that kind of cash and hence their games are canceled.

Yup, volunteer. Many clubs use High School students to officiate. The kids do it to satisfy their Community Service graduation requirements.
$500 for 90 minutes work? Like was noted above, (post # 3) norm is $40-$50 a game for the leagues that pay. Club my daughter played in's charter forbids paying officials.

Paid, I believe my youngest got $23 per game as the side ref. That was about 6 years ago.

@MillauFr This is much more in line with what I would expect. Not hundreds of dollars, and a little less than going rate because I assume they provide the insurance. Although, I have run into more than one paid official who did not realize the league that was paying them did not provide insurance. A lot of folks don't think about that. With a minor, the parents could be on the hook if there is a liability issue and no insurance..

My side hustle is pottery. I attend 3 to 4 festivals a year, have 1 wholesale client that buys in bulk and several family and friends that purchase as a make or order items to be made. It is my therapy and I really enjoy making items that people love and want to use.

My daughter had an etsy store for a hot minute, but I don't like shipping items because the risk of breakage is not worth the effort. The only digital platform I use is facebook, she and I are business partners: https://www.facebook.com/DragonflyPotteryGals/
Gorgeous stuff!

I'm a world championship level softball umpire. I travel around the country for between 4-6 weekends a summer to umpire the best players in the world and then spend a week in FL for the World Championships. I could travel just about every weekend in the summer but I want to stay married. This fall I'm going to start refereeing hockey.

What is Sports Official liability insurance running these days?
For me it's included in my registration fees. I umpire for two organizations (USSSA and USA Softball) I pay $85/ year for my USSSA registration and that includes my insurance for all sanctioned and unsanctioned softball games, scrimmages and practices I take part in. My local school district that also operates the parks department pays my USA Softball registration and that also included insurance for all sanctioned and unsanctioned games, scrimmages and practices. I don't yet know the insurance situation for USA Hockey.

That was the norm when I was umpiring. Insurance was a perk with association membership. You had to provide your own insurance here if you accepted pay. Volunteer umpires were automatically insured under each Little League's charter insurance. I always was a volunteer. Got a free hot dog and a soda after the game from the snack bar. My wife felt I called too many games as it was, she would have divorced me if I took on more games, even if paid. I think one season I called 56 games over the 8 week season. Only thing I really enjoyed was when my son hit high school, he started umpiring and we did a lot of games together.
