I've been fighting off a cold for a few days and it finally hit hard yesterday. I've got the sore and scratchy throat, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, mild body aches - the whole deal.

I tried some Theraflu for severe cold and it didn't do anything but make me feel tipsy for about 15 minutes. :tilt: I've also been taking vitamin c drops that are supposed to have 100% of the vitamin c you need for the day in each one.

What's your favorite remedy to make you feel almost human again?

If you are going to be home wallowing in your misery, here's my hot toddy recipe that is great for a sore throat. I squeeze half a lemon in a mug, then add a huge spoonful of honey and a shot or two of bourbon. Then fill it up with hot water and stir until the honey disolves. You might have to add more honey depending on whether you like the taste of bourbon or not. This really does make you feel better I promise.:thumbsup2

I refuse to take anything, really. I find I get over a cold much more quickly if I suffer through a couple of days of misery. Whenever I take something, the symptoms just seem to linger on and on - especially my cough.

I will take a pain medication (ibuprofen) for a sore throat, though. And I drink plenty of fluids.

Hope you are feeling better, soon. :flower3:

I'm wallowing all right. :(

I've got the honey, but none of the other stuff. Might have to send DH for some on his way home or something. :)

Any other remedies out there?

2-3 Ibuprofen every 5-6 hours. Works pretty well on the the pain relief.

Ice cream! It doesn't hurt to also take some commercial sore throat medicine.

Half a lemon, 1 1/2 teaspoons honey, some chopped ud fresh ginger root and boiling water. Always works for me.

Gargle w/ Hydrogen Peroxide 3X a day. Gargle for as long as you can stand it. Make sure it hits the back of your throat!!:thumbsup2

For a sore throat we drink warm (or hot if you can stand it) lemonaide.

its that time of year again...
My back of nose and throat are raw right now - its coming - and I wanna nip it in the bud before I become miserable.
I'm starting tonight on some Peppermint schnapps - it is a good sipper - and works in 2 ways. :drinking:
My mom used to make her own version - crushed up peppermints in some of gramma's moonshine. (yes - we had moonshine - it was in a mason jar too - got somethin to say??)
But it worked like a charm.
Thanks for the suggestions!!

Moonshine! Awesome! :teeth: My Granny swears by Jack Daniels mixed with lemon and honey. I remember being given a little that had been microwaved when I was younger and really sick. It tasted horrid, but I think it helped some.

Yep, I think we need to go to the store.

These are really great, you guys!

I've got it too. I also have sinusitis. I asked a similar question the other day and got some great responses. (Thank you again to all the DIS ladies! :goodvibes )

I've been drinking lots of hot tea. I like Celestial Seasonings Peppermint with some honey. It really helps soothe my throat. I also like the Lemon Zinger and have been alternating between the two.

Some ladies mentioned Mucinex (sp?). I've been using the MucinexD during the day. I'm pretty sensitive to medicine so I only use half a dose twice a day. It really has cut down on the drainage and coughing. Without it, I was getting terrible pressure in my ears and sinuses. The product really loosenes things up. At least now I can function during the day.

At night I take Delsym (?) for the cough. It has helped me to get some rest at night.

There were some other great suggestions too on that thread. My problem has been the terrible coughing, but those two products did the trick. Thanks again, ladies! :)

HTH and that you feel better soon!!

Don't laugh but I actually got this treatment from a nun when I was 16:

If you have the flemmy buildup in your throat--which I did--gargle with scotch.

Burns it right out.

The cold with severe sore throat is running thru my house. I used Tylenol Sore Throat daytime formula (its a bright blue liquid) and found that it really did work!! Its my new favorite cold medicine.

I second gargling with salt water. I had a sore throat last Saturday. DS5 wasn't feeling well either so I made an appointment with each of our doctor's that Monday. Come to find out that *both* of us had strep :headache: Our doctors put us on antibiotics and within 24 hours we were fine. Just in time for Turkey Day

The salt water helped my throat so it didn't get as bad as the last time I had strep. I could barely swallow that time :sad2:
