As a DVC newbie can anyone share suggestions for meals/snacks they make at their DVC home?? Do you find the ability to cook some meals yourself helps keep co$ts down? Thanks.

None! The kitchen in a DVC villa for me is for keeping drinks and snacks cold, toasting an occasional bagel or muffin and reheating left overs. I have never even turned the stove on in any DVC villa I have ever stayed in. I can not even tell you if they are gas or electric stoves! I think electric but I don't get close enough to it to be sure, I look at my stove at home enough! LOL
To us, eating at the many wonderful restaurants at WDW is a big part of our vacation. We never cook more than a bagel or muffin in the morning and make a pot of coffee. We love eating at all our favorite WDW restaurants and do so at least one meal a day. However, my family is all adults. When the kids were young, pre DVC, we used to stay in the cabins at FW and cooked quite a bit. There we had a grill so we grilled chicken, burgers, etc or another easy meal is spaghetti w/pre made meat balls, bagged salad, jarred sauce and a loaf of bread or the pasta bake oven dinners with chicken & bagged salad.

DeeP- You had me laughing. My DS are all under 3 so We'll probably spend some nights at the Villa relaxing. I'll let you know if its gas or electric.

Please do, I would appreciate it! Not too long ago one of my co workers who rented DVC pts from someone, asked me about the stoves and I could not answer! Me that is always going on about how wonderful DVC villas are and all...boy was I red faced! LOL!
Seriously though with little ones you will love the kitchens in a DVC villa and it will come in very, very handy. So will the w&d! When my kids were little and I did cook on a WDW vacation we made all sorts of quick and easy yet good stuff in our cabin and it was much easier on the kids. The pre cooked chickens available at any grocery are also good things to have on hand at the villa. And for any baked oven pasta etc dishes buy the throw away tin foil pans for fast & easy clean up.

I can speak for the stoves at OKW, BCVs and Vero Beach and say that they are all electric.

A couple of our favorite meals to make for a big group of adults, and with the 2 bedroom, we always have a group of adults...

We stop at Publix and buy a large jar of spaghetti sauce and then add some hamburger, some garlic, etc. It makes for a nice meal for a group. Our second favorite meal is chicken casears salad. We used the bagged salad, we broil a few seasoned chicken breasts add the fixins and a few warmed rolls and butter and you have a meal.

We are planning to do something "different" for our annual "Christmas dinner" when we are down from Dec 10 - 14. We are hoping we can "pre-order" a turkey dinner and all the trimmings from Publix and bring that back to the villa to eat. Does anyone know if that can be done down there? Sure would be nice to have everything all ready made and it would be a LOT cheaper than a night out. Plus it would just feel more "family like" We are planning on decorating the place and watching a Christmas DVD while eating.

Yes, Publix and Albertsons both offer this and I think, so does Goodings. I have personally never ordered one of these meals but have read reports on the boards from folks who have and most are favorable. I think you have to call a couple days in advance to place your order. Enjoy, sounds like a lovely evening and my kind of cooking! LOL! ;)

If we are not doing a Character breakfast we have....

Roast beef (or corned beef) hash and eggs made all in one pan, Toast and OJ for the adults...... kids get the cereal of the month.....

If we are at the resort for lunch (pool day) we will make the kids mac and cheese, and we will have sandwiches.....

Most dinners are eaten out.

Snacks....... fruit, chips, juice, ice cream sandwiches, popcorn, fruit snacks etc.......

Make a meal at DVC???????? I thought that stove was just a decoration. ;) We do use the frig for drinks and milk for cereal in the morning. The coffeemaker sure comes in handy, too. :teeth:

We thought that was the best thought.... decoration. They needed something to fill that hole between the fridge and the dishwasher!

I don't think I could eat every meal in the parks (or even almost every meal). In regards to cost and health, I much prefer to prepare VERY simple meals in the room.

For breakfast:
Oatmeal or cereal (rarely eggs or such - we usually do at least one character breakfast).

Lunch:
tuna, mac and cheese, soup, salad (sometimes I cook chicken or beef ahead of time for add-ons to the salad or for sandwiches).

Supper:
burgers, chicken, fish fillets, with a vegetable (mostly frozen), pasta

The only time we cook is for breakfast. If we are back around lunchtime we will make sandwiches. We always go out for dinner - we enjoy eating at all of our favorite restaurants at WDW. Our youngest child is eleven though - I can see not wanting to eat out all the time with younger children.

I generally hate meals in the room. As previously mentioned, eating out at the various WDW eateries is a major part of the magic for me and eating in the room takes that away for me. I don't have children to worry about, so that's not a concern for me. However, I will be spending Thanksgiving at the BWV this year and realize that trying to get into a WDW restaurant for Thanksgiving fare would most likely try my patience.

So, CAK and I are planning on ordering a Turducken (link below) and tossing it in the oven of our 2-bedroom villa Thanksgiving morning. Then, we will have a sitdown Thanksgiving meal. Not even sure if we'll get into a park that day.

Cornbread Stuffed Turducken

Here are the items I cooked when we were at BCV in June:

Breakfast
Stove: pancakes, ham & cheese omelets, french toast
Microwave: Croissant Pockets
Toaster: toast or english muffins

Lunch/Dinner
Stove/Oven: grilled cheese, mac & cheese, frozen pizza, homemade spaghetti sauce, hot dogs, & hamburgers
Microwave: Nachos

On our trip last May, the boys were playing golf and the girls were park hopping, so we planned a dinner every night - only two were eaten out. And we ate out for breakfast twice.

It was so hot every day and we were happy to go back to the room to cool off and have a nice group dinner.

My husband cooked breakfast most days. Eggs, bacon, toast, homefries. Yum.

We had wheat italian sandwich rolls and fillings for lunch. Plus lots of veggies and salad stuff.

The dinners were: Steak, potatoes and salad (again my DH the chef), tacos, spaghetti and sauce with meatballs, burgers.

Our favorite was the tacos - not too much work, cool and light.

We had planned the menus ahead of time and bought to the menus. We really saved money this way and had very little waste at the end of the week.

Fresh, steamed blue crab caught right off the pier (in Hilton Head Island) by our DSs!!!!

Second in line are burgers on the grill while I am setting the picnic table on the porch overlooking the marsh!!!!

Karen

14-16 pigs feet
one large onion
two whole heads of garlic
a handful of peppercorns
paprika
salt to taste

Rye bread

Place the feets in a large pot, fill with water and add onions, peeled garlic, peppercorns, paprika and salt. Bring to boil and simmer for 2 1/2 hours. Place two feets in each bowl, strain the water ithey was boiled in and divide equally among the bowls.

Place bowls in the fridge overnight, liquid will gel and you have meals that can just be whipped out of the fridge ready to eat.

That sounds heavenly! I have got to tear myself away from WDW and try HH one of these trips. Do you drive from Pa to HH or fly?

DeeP....I felt the same way about skipping WDW for a trip to HH. We have been there twice and love it! We drive from PA. We head down the day before check in and both times we have stayed at the Holiday Inn in Santee, SC. Only about a 2 hour drive from there. We drive straight through on the way back home......12 hours:eek:  . Although I dislike the drive home, it works best for us.......we need some way to get beach chairs, boogie boards, buckets, beach toys, bike helmets, food, beverages, etc down there!!!!!!

HH will pleasantly surprise you! :D :D :D

Thanks for the pizza information Nick. I have wondered where to get better pizza. I haven't found a place at WDW that we like. Annmarie
