What's your camera memory strategy?

Hi Everyone,

I'm just getting in to vlogging/videos (I used to be a wedding photographer so I'm obsessed with memory cards and storage), I'm taking 2 x 32gb cards and 2 x 16gb cards that I will be recording a mix of stills and video on every day, I have a 1TB hard drive that I will be able to download my cards on to every night so will have fresh cards each day. I won't be getting memory maker (just not our thing).

So what's your strategy for having enough space? How many cards do you/will you be taking along?

:thanks:

Similar to yours. A few SD cards, large USB HD in the room. Storage is so cheap nowadays, there's no reason not to abuse it.

So true, I'm kind of wondering if I should take some more cards but I think I'll be okay with what I have...I'm used to them filling so quickly when shooting RAW but I'm only taking my vlogging camera so shouldn't have to worry too much.

It can't hurt to take a few extra cards if you have them. If you're worried about filling them up, I'd take extra in case you're too exhausted after a long day to transfer them to your hard drive. That said, I never think to take pictures when I'm there. I can be there 6 days and maybe get 25-30 pics.

Take lots of cards.
Download them daily to the HD.
But, leave the files on the cards, too.

If you drop the HD, or it gets lost or stolen, etc. you'll still have your shots.

Cheap insurance.

Memory is both cheap and small. Take twice as much as you think you'll need. I don't delete anything on the road.

If you underestimate, it won't be nearly as cheap to buy at Disney. And they won't be the fast namebrand high capacity cards you probably prefer.

I don't think I'll have capacity to leave everything on the cards, we're going for 3.5 weeks and by the time we get to Disney I'll already have heaps of footage. Although I've just looked at the best buy website, SD cards look to be quite a bit cheaper in the US so I might just stock up when I arrive.

hi!
Can you download SD cards directly to one of those small portable hard drives without having to bring a laptop with you? I don't want to bring my laptop to WDW, but would love to be able to download my cards every night.
Thanks for any info...

I am taking every memory card that I have and I just bought two more yesterday. So I will have a total of 3 regular cards (8, 16 & 32 gb) and a micro 32gb.

I wasn't planning on taking my laptop since it's a bit of a beast and heavy so I'm hoping that's enough.

I used to carry along an external drive but then I had to carry along a laptop as well. Then I invested in a Western Digital MyCloud (12Tb) NAS and my phone is set to upload every picture and video I take to my personal cloud whenever I'm on a wifi connection. I realize that won't work for a camera that doesn't have wifi capabilities but it might be worth looking into an upgrade if it means you don't have to cart along two other devices on every trip and can access your pics/videos from anywhere via your own cloud. You don't have to go with a full-blown multi-drive RAID NAS to start, you could get a 1 or 2Tb WD MyCloud for a reasonable price and put it on your home network.

Or you could even get some free cloud storage with MS OneDrive or Google if you have or get a camera capable of uploading to it.

You can, kinda, if you have a smartphone. First, you need something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-FileHub-Wireless-External-File-Server/dp/B00AQUMZRA

Then, you connect your smartphone or tablet to that router. Plug a USB hard drive into the router. Download the app on your phone to connect to the router. Put the SD card into the router. Using the app, both the SD card and USB HD appear on screen. Move the files back and forth as you wish. You can even view and delete files right there that you know you won't want (too blurry, under/overexposed). Rinse and repeat.

Personally I shoot RAW, dump cards to laptop, and upload laptop to cloud each night. (JPG only, but its a 3rd backup) If I bring my USB HDD with me for longer trips, I'll back em up to the USB HDD as well, and then wipe the cards. If no HDD, cards don't get wiped. I need CF, not SD so costs a bit more, but I don't do much video. I strive for 3 copies located in at least two different geographic places.

Or heck, even Amazon. They seem to have a gold box deal once a week or so with SD cards. Only good thing about Best Buy is they will price match most other major retailers now (including Amazon) and you know the cards are legit. Need to be careful about 3rd party sellers with awesome prices as the cards are often no names repackaged with name brands.

I have 2 128gb sandisc extreme plus cards for my canon EOS 7D and an emergency 64gb. That camera eats up the memory. I have a 1tb drive I bring with me for dumping the photos and videos on every night.

One 64 class 10, and a 32 class 10 backup. Even shooting raw+JPEG, that's more space than I'll ever use.

I bring a whole wallet of cards -- usually using one a day for my trip. When I use a card, I place it back in the wallet facing down. I don't fuss with downloading at night.

That's pretty much what I do as well.

For my CF camera, I have a couple of these. Their transfer rate is very high (enough for multi-burst shooting.)

Then, you can use regular SD or microSD cards and your memory costs will plummet.

They even offer versions that hold TWO micro SD cards at once.

(32 GB class 10 SD is really inexpensive from MicroCenter.)

No I don't have any connections to MicroCenter.
They just have the lowest prices on SD cards,
and I buy a lot of 'em.

A few 32gb cards are enough for a trip.... I'm not shutter crazy like I was a decade ago..... when I want a picture today, I just google it on the internet.
