Does anyone else zoom over the posts containing bible quotes? Just curious. I think most of us are familiar with the bible and the only people reading them are the people that have the same POV as the poster.

It would be nice if people used their own words to explain their position. Just a thought. Carry on.

Jesus Himself responded with Scripture when confronted by Satan. If I'm going to discuss my beliefs, I'm gonna try to back them up with Scripture. Even if no one reads it, I feel better knowing what the Bible says.

he's a good looking kid, too bad his fingers were attacked by a pit bull. Aidensmom is a neighbor, so she gets all of my love, even though we don't agree on things.

Kikifan made an assertion that Jesus never claimed to be God. Where else would I quote from but the Bible? How can one claim that they they Jesus is such a good example to follow but believe He is a liar? Talk about picking and choosing.

carrie s I'm so sorry that you and your mom had problems over your views on religion. I think most parents have a hard time when their kids chose a different spiritual path. Really what's important is that you find a path that is right for you.

aquinas I'm familiar with all the quotes you referenced. And I certainly understand why many people interpret them to mean that God is Jesus. However, even within the quotes you posted there are conflicted statements. Jesus references God as something outside of himself as well as the "father and I are one" statement. So in a situation where information conflicts who is to say that one is right over another? I can only say what is right to me/ for me. For me, the only explanation that fits is the example of a wave in the ocean. The wave is of the ocean but it is not the ocean itself. I believe that Jesus was trying to teach us that God is with and within all of us. But that is not the same thing as being God. obviously YMMV. I'm not trying to convert anyone just explaining why I believe what I do.

I completely disagree with C.S. Lewis. Not being God does not make him a lunatic. To me the real beauty of Jesus's story is what he accomplished in his human life, through the power of absolute faith. Knowing that we too can do these things (and greater) through faith is what inspires me to strive to the level of faith and devotion that Jesus showed us. To me the lesson isn't nearly as powerful if Jesus is God. Because of course God is perfection. But a man who transends his "humaness" to operate as a spiritual being in this world is a much greater teacher and example of what I can achieve.

Yes I understand that being "reborn" is a biblical term. My point is that too often people treat being reborn as a "lifetime pass" which excuses all future behavior. What good does it do if you're in church on Sunday if on Monday you're a racist? I just think "being reborn" is a phrase that gets thrown out there like a fashion accessory without any real follow up. jmo

Doesn't your Protestant church preach Jesus as Savior?

The church teaches that he's the son of God.

Nobody in the church I attend is "saved" by Jesus, nobody is "born again", nobody speaks in tongues, we recognize no saints, and we're pretty left-leaning - friendly to women, gays, whoever. Jesus Christ is spoken of but in the context of God, not instead of.

You never see the Protestant denominations in the news, it's all the busybodies in the noisy denominations who are clamoring for attention. I don't think that Jesus (if you buy into the Bible and what it speaks of) was particularly interested in people carrying on that like. Try giving all your possessions to the poor, try hanging out with the gangsters and the hookers and those with AIDS, THAT is the Biblical Jesus was a lot more likely to do.

He certainly wasn't interested in someone skywriting over our favorite vacation spot!

Wow, this is still going on? Hi Jenny! I'll throw in a word and then I have to go to bed! If Jesus was not God, then all the good He did was worth nothing! His very name, Immanuel, means "God with us". In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." I know it is a leap of faith to believe in Jesus and all He is. Jesus is that Word. The difference is the written Word of God came to life. He fulfilled God's plan to redeem or purchase back mankind. God wanted a family. It is what we all want really. To have someone to love and to be loved. Love you Jenny, I think about you often! I have been too busy to get on the boards. Should calm down after Thanksgiving and then again after Christmas!
