What's with all these upgrades?

I would love an upgrade! I think it's great fro the people that get it. It would not upset me if I didn't get one unless we had some sort of problem. We are staying at POR in June and would love to be upgraded to a deluxe but I am sure that will never happen!

Two Easter breaks ago, we were upgraded from Pop to OKW. We wound up in a villa on the water!:cool1: I'm thrilled that others have had been pixie dusted! Good for them!:thumbsup2

I'm surprised that Disney will upgrade people from a Value to a Deluxe. I would have expected them to upgrade people from a Value to a Moderate and other people from a Moderate to a Deluxe - that way they get twice as many happy customers. Fantastic for those that get the upgrade, though.

I just hope that people don't start expecting upgrades every time they visit.

Side question - do you get 'offered' an upgrade or do you have to take it? I can imagine people having their heart set on a particular resort and not wanting to change.

I think that after SOME people have the experience in a 'nicer' resort they may be more likely to book that resort or one in the same classification. So it might help Disney when doing these upgrades. :confused3 Just trying to look at it from another perspective.

I thought this as well since I think that's what willl happen to us when we stay at the Lodges.

That is what I was wondering also. If I stay at Pop, I would not want to be upgraded to a mod at all... could I refuse the upgrade?

My sister and I were just discussing free upgrades today. This is my families 4th year in a row of staying on Disney property, always in a moderate resort. We go in September. We always have at least 3 rooms, last two years have been 10 days with parkhopper tickets/water parks and more added. We have been blessed with free dining but while we were there and since, have heard about people who did the samething, supposedly just asked and were upgraded to deluxe. I would share any info with anyone about the packages we have gotten and would love for someone to tell us how to go about getting an upgrade. We are scheduled for this year September 11-20th. Help! Thanks everyone, love the board and advice.

upgrading room types is fine, from standard to water view, but i think they should be careful on upgrading resorts. You could end up with guests that are expecting or looking forward to an upgrade, and are disappointed on their trip. Or worse offend guests, who may not return. Imagne a guest at the GF pool surrounded by people who are so excited because they got upgraded and only paid 1/3 the price.

In my travel experience, upgrades may happen anywhere at any time. If someone complains because the guy next to them got a free upgrade then they must not travel enough either. It comes with trip... sometimes you win... sometimes someone else wins... I've seen post here on the DIS from people who were supposed to be in BC and got upgraded to Executive Suites in GF... it happens... on one of my trips to Vegas I was upgraded from a deluxe at Planet Hollywood to a $800 a night Panoramic Suite... it happens... don't rain on someone else's good fortunate... be happy that they could experience something in a manner that you can too...

I think you have an important point. If someone is paying $82/NT (rack) to stay at Pop and is upgraded to a Deluxe such as the YC (as I've read is happening to many) which starts at $325 (rack), doesn't this create an atmosphere of of ill will at the YC where the majority have booked and paid to stay there at a rate upwards of 4 times more:confused:? And, as far as I'm aware, all of the upgrades from Pop to a Deluxe that I've read about here, have been unsolicited.

I speculated earlier that Disney might be offering the upgrades because it may close a portion of Pop down due to low occupancy rates and/or other economic factors. Whatever the reason may be, Disney is doing a disservice to those who book and pay Deluxe prices (rack or not) by upgrading people to a resort 4 times the price of a Value:sad2:.

I would love to know why they could not be upgraded to a mod. or, as the PP mentions, to a better view or room type at Pop or another Value:confused3.

What are people's thoughts on those being in the Lodge (Animal Kingdom? Wilderness? not sure where) and having the others arrive? The Lodge people paid for the accommodations, what are there thoughts on the throngs of people getting the same thing for just a fraction of the cost? It's not just a random, you are family 42 so you get a bump, or we oversold for this evening and you need to move up. It seems to be a we have all this open deluxe space, so let's fill it. Do people even care? I'm happy for those that are upgraded, you know, good for them, but what about the people who shelled out for the deluxe?

Hmmmm.....seems to me that as the family who paid for the room at the lodge that I got exactly what I paid for, so no quarrel. Of course, it seems to me that in the little black book that I read fairly regularly there is a little "story" that is similar....something about workers coming late getting the same pay....so for me, I look at it as why should I have a problem if WDW wants to be generous with someone else? It costs me nothing, and I am getting exactly the deal that I agreed to.

That would more sense. They'd be giving each group a taste of what it's like to move one step up. Value people might book a mod next time, mod people might book a deluxe - double impact!

I got upgraded last September at the Poly..but I had paid for a Garden view room and got upgraded to CL. I liked it so much that I paid for CL for 2009. I wouldn't care if someone else gets an upgrade to CL or a Deluxe...I remember how surprised and happy I was when it happened to me. I wouldn't deny anyone else that experience.

Plus, I think Disney knows what is doing when it gives these upgrades out...I bet that there are plenty of people who will become Deluxe resort lovers after that, or will fall in love with Club Level.;)

Isn't that a rather big leap? Do those who stay at a Value want/can pay 4 times as much to stay Deluxe because they were upgraded once? Wouldn't most prefer a Deluxe? Probably. Will they become "Deluxe resort lovers" Yes, probably. Will they become Deluxe payers - a lot less likely.

I would have to agree. We were upgraded at the Poly from a garden view room to a MK view room. Was it awesome? Of course. Would I love to book MK view the next time I am fortunate enough to stay at the Poly? Yes, but it's not going to happen. Had we paid for MK view, it would have been over $1200 more for our 8 night stay. :scared1: So even though we loved the view, especially since it was Christmas and the castle dream lights were on, we still aren't going to pay to get that view the next time we stay there.

I don't think that the upgrades are based on the fact that Disney is hoping that people will only stay in deluxes in the future. My feeling is that Disney is having a tougher time filling up the deluxes in this economy and that the values may be overbooked at times. The mods may be more full than deluxes so they upgrade from value to deluxe due to more availability.

Also, my first time at WDW I stayed at AKL with a savannah view room, and while that was a nice hotel I won't stay there again (unless I'm upgraded or get a smokin deal) we're staying a value our next visit, since we were hardly ever in the room and I can't justify spending the money again.
