Whats with all the Smoking?

I don't see why they can't do that now. As a business, Disney can make any rules it wants, within the law - even stricter rules. I live in a liberal state :teeth: where smoking is banned in all workplaces.
My apartment complex interprets that to include the hallways and laundry room, because a maintenance or security employee MAY be exposed to the smoke; in addition, they prohibit smoking outdoors in the fenced-in pool area even though the ONLY employees who would be present would be there as tenants, not workers - no lifeguards on duty, any maintenance would be done either outside pool hours or the pool area would be closed completely. Disney can surely institute the same policies...

They can, but its bad PR for them - at least among smokers. If they manage to get a law passed, then the State becomes the bad guy, Disney is just enforcing the law.

Most smokers I know are in the considerate set - and I appreciate it. In return, I try to be considerate in understanding their needs.

How true. The community where I live has a new anti-smoking ordiance that takes affect Aug. 1. Prior to that several restaurants were set to go non-smoking. When the law was passed, they delayed this process. One of the managers told me that by delaying it until the law forced their hand, they were off the hook of the smokers. They can now say "its the law, I can't do anything about it"..smjj

About two weeks ago, I received a confirmation for an upcoming trip to Gatlinburg Town Square. The owners voted and now all of the rooms are nonsmoking. It stated that you could smoke on the balcony. I will be there for a visit in July and will check on the new policy.

I really could not believe the number of people openly ingoring the smoking regulations. And the few times I pointed it out to castmembers, they seemed unconcerned and did nothing.

Don't forget that some Cast Members are smokers too - I guess about the same proportion as the general population. Maybe the CMs you talked to were smokers!

You are probably right, Andrew, however Cast Members should enforce Disney Policy without regard to their own personal beliefs or opinions.

Smoking.............. after watching two family members die of cancer I'm a little sensitive to this stuff. Here is a substance proven to kill the smoker and others exposed to the second hand smoke and it is still being sold throughout the world. It just goes to show that the world revolves around money and money only. Sales of cigs, chemo treatments, doctor visits, medications, all of it is about the money. Drug companes and cigarette companies are huge lobbyists.

They should ban all production of this killing substance now. Apparently a few bucks is more important than saving lives and taking some of the burden off of insurance companies. It won't happen but I can dream........ :sad2:

SEVERAL instances of people walking through the Parks openly smoking.....smoking on the Friendship Boat, smoking by the VWL pools, smoking in restaruants. I really could not believe the number of people openly ingoring the smoking regulations. And the few times I pointed it out to castmembers, they seemed unconcerned and did nothing.
I noticed that back in May when we were there. Now I don't know if you got close enough to those smokers but they did seem to be foriegners most of the time. Except one thing, when did the area by the VWL pools become non-smoking? They have ashtrays out there.

All pools, at all WDW resorts allow smoking, and always have. The pool bars that have outside seating also allow smoking. We were at SSR a few weeks ago and were surprised at how many people were smoking at the tables right in front of the bar.

I too am a former smoker, and I can say that I always followed the rules. And as far as smoking in the room, forget it. Even though we would get a smoking room, DH and I would still smoke outside. Now that I have quit...DH only smokes outside at the resort and will go to the permitted smoking areas at the parks. And I totally agree with the post that said how nonsmokers sit in the smoking area to get the seats. So many times when I would go with my DH for him to smoke, I was surprised to see so many nonsmokers sitting there. And making a big deal about the smoke. I love my DH dearly, I wish he would stop smoking. But until he does, I deal with it. It's a struggle to quit, it's not as easy as some people who have never smoked think. But don't sit where smoking is permitted and complain about it. And as for the people walking through the park, or are at a resturant smoking...put them out, they are not smoking areas.

If your a smoker or non-smoker just be considerate of other people. There are plenty of smoking spots and that's where smokers should smoke.....and if a non-smoker decides to sit in a smoking spot do not complain about it.

I think that people who just walk around the parks or anywhere else in Disney or other places smoking are just plain inconsiderate of other people...not only the smoke issue but the chance you may accidentally burn a little child running by.

There are also other inconsiderate people that have nothing to do with smoking...like the ones who push in front of you to get on a bus when you are trying to carry a sleeping child on. Then there are the people that ride the motorized carts around that almost run you off your path as your walking and some you see do not even need them do to medical conditions, it is just that they are to overweight or to lazy to just walk but then you see them running to be first on line at the buffet and knock you down in the process.

Than you have the people at the resort who let their kids jump in and splash around in the hot tub while you are trying to relax and do not even say anything to them.

So like I said..Just be a little considerate of other people.....Let the person holding the sleeping baby go in front of you on the bus...maybe even give up your seat to them if they cant find one.....hold a door open for someone...say thank you and please..and just be nice.....Do for other people what you might want done for you or your family if the situation was reversed...Just Be Considerate.

I posted something similar to this on another thread or even possibly another forum. So i totally agree.

Back in May I saw a guy about 3 times in a wheelchair getting pushed to the front of the attraction line a couple times. One night we were on the same boat from VWL to MK and it started to pour. He got up out of his wheelchair picked it up and ran up the boat dock to get under the pavillion. 2 hours later I saw getting pushed to the front of the line on Thunder Mountain. Now that's a real winner

Why is this ok? Fine, if smokers want to smoke in some designated area away from non-smokers....then it's not my problem. However, why should I be forced to have their smoke circulating around me and my children at a pool where they space belongs to everybody? What right do smokers have to force my family to either breath their second hand smoke or be forced to move because of a few thoughtless people. Also, smokers who smoke in plain view of young children are setting a bad example.

Why should smokers be put in a corner somewhere just because non-smokers want the freedom to go everywhere.

I don't smoke never have but DW does and the first thing she looks for on the map is the designated smoking areas. However if they are allowed to smoke there or at the pool bar then why shouldn't they. She doesn't smoke in the house ,cars or places we stay even if it's a smokeing room.

I get sick at the smell of some foods but I just avoid those areas they might be in and don't cause trouble when others are enjoying the things I don't.

It's a two way street and don't blame all the smokers for the few that break the rules .

I see way many other rule abuses going on then just the small amount of smokers.

Like another post stated it's all about the money and with Millions of smokers Disneys not going to rock the boat but will look as if they are making an effort.

Because the second hand smoke kills people! Smokers have every right to contaminate their own bodies and the bodies of other smokers in designated areas, but not in public spaces where non-smokers can't escape them. Pools are public spaces, if there was a designated smoking section that was blocked off with separate ventilation, then more power to them. However, smokers do not have a right to violate my breathing space with their deadly fumes!

I get sick at the smell of some foods but I just avoid those areas they might be in and don't cause trouble when others are enjoying the things I don't.

The smell of some foods won't kill you!

I quit smoking years ago. For those of you who never smoked, believe me, not smoking sometimes is not an option. It is a physical addiction as well as a bad choice. Looking back at when I smoked, it would be physically impossible to not smoke somewhere. I don't know if I can say this here, but I got a medicine from my doctor called Zyban. It was a miracle. It was not until then that I realized just how much of the cravings were physical and it wasn't just weakness of my will (like blowing a diet). I just had to work then on the habit. I am thankful every day that I was able to quit.

Rigsby- Congratulations!!! You have made a great step towards your future good health! :thumbsup2

I unfortunately have not. I tried Wellbutrin (which is Zyban, basically) and because of my OCD, bad things happened, one of which involved me being literally afraid to open my door for 2 weeks. So, alas, I am on my own, trying to quit.

But to stay on topic, I think there should be a separate smoking area near the pools, just as there is in the parks. I also think that smoking in a nonsmoking room is inexcusable. Walking outside and standing off to the side would probably do you some good! People with asthma and some other respiratory issues are not only affected by direct second hand smoke. I have seen an asthmatic child in an ER who had an attack stopped with medication, go into ANOTHER full blown attack because one of his family members went outside, smoked, and came back in with the smell on his clothes! The smoky smell left in the room could have a seriously adverse effect on someone.

I agree with the designated areas and staying away from others who don't smoke for several reasons. One of course is health issues. Another, which is why I think the pool should have an area off to the side, is the danger of burning someone!! The people who wander the parks with a cigarette are idiots. My daughter had her eye burned when she was 4 by some man at the playground who was standing in the middle of the running kids with a cigarette in his hand. I wouldn't wave a lit candle around a bunch of people, why would I do it with a cigarette? :sad2:

I also think having a designated area cuts down on the mess. Because people are slobs. We smoke at DTD, we go off to the side, never near the outdoor seats at the restaurants. If there is not an immediately available ashtray, DH "field strips" the butts and we carry them to an ashtray. But most people just toss them on the ground. Yuck.

I go out of my way to be respectful of others at WDW and anywhere else. Here in NY, you cannot smoke in restaurants, bars, the malls, anywhere. But when I go outside to smoke, I stand away from the door, so no one has to go through clouds to get in. It is amazing how many other people don't care. And they make nonsmokers think I am an inconsiderate jerk. I am not. I actually only smoke a few a day at WDW, just enough to keep me from going into withdrawal, and to make it easy to not bother other people.

One small comment I have to make regarding something said on here about smokers setting a bad example: I do not drink. My ex is an alcoholic and used to beat me up more often than not. So my 2 older kids are that much more likely to be alcoholics because their dad and his mother are. I think people drinking at the pool set a bad example for my kids. Why can't they have fun at a pool without a drink??? I am not asking WDW to ban drinking at the pools completely. Don't bring setting an example into the equation. My kids ask me why I smoke. I told them I was stupid to start and it was the biggest mistake of my life. They see me struggle to stop. Smoking is not a parenting issue, unless you are giving your 5 yr old a cigarette. That comment really bothered me. I could make a list of 100 things that other people do that sets a bad example for children.
