Whats with all the Smoking?

Same song.........different verse. Not wanting to start the same old arguments, but just making a few recent trip observations.

The trip started by having to spend our first night in a Smoking Room after a medical request that was 7 months in advance. (Yes I know that these are just requests). That should have been a sign though because I saw more smoking than on any previous trip. SEVERAL instances of people walking through the Parks openly smoking.....smoking on the Friendship Boat, smoking by the VWL pools, smoking in restaruants. I really could not believe the number of people openly ingoring the smoking regulations. And the few times I pointed it out to castmembers, they seemed unconcerned and did nothing. Even the check-in cast member thought it was no big deal to put us in a smoking room the first night.

Our trip was great and we did not let this spoil the magic, but I really hope this is not a trend or a sign of things to come.

I hope it's not, either ... It makes me crazy that some people are so inconsiderate as to put the health of others at risk (and I don't mean just long-term second-hand; I'm talking about those of us who have reactions to smoke). Disney really needs to get on the stick and strictly enforce the fact that you can only smoke in designated areas, because obviously there are a LOT of people out there who think THEY are the only ones that matter and that rules don't apply to them. :sad2:

It could be that the time of your visit happened to be related to a time when more people from an area where smoking is more common were on vacation. Different areas of the country, and other countries as well, have different times that are typically good for them to vacation.

I know when we moved to the south I noticed a whole lot more smoking than I was used to in PA. And a friend who had moved to PA from CA noticed a lot more smoking there than their previous home.

As far as the CM's not caring....I've seen a lot more of that in general lately. Disappointing. Seems a lot of people don't want to be bothered with doing their jobs.

Unfortunately, my MIL is one of those folks who smokes openly in the parks wherever and whenever she chooses. :guilty: I have seen CMs tell her time and again to put out the cigarette because whe is not in a smoking area. Often, she just waits for the CM to walk away then she lights up again. :confused3

The bottom line is, I wouldn't blame the CMs. They can't follow people around and make sure they don't light up. It's really a shame some people are so inconsiderate.

That maybe true. However, they can specifically make smoking and non-smoking rooms to address this issue like many other facilities have. The question is whether they are willing to do so.

Aren't all rooms at the Disneyland resorts non-smoking now, or will be in the near future? (or did I dream that I read that?)

Yes, all three Disneyland resorts are now nonsmoking. It's fantastic. The Grand California has always been nonsmoking, the other two resorts just recently joined them. Hopefully WDW will soon follow suit.

I agree. I think it is a shame that anyone booking at DVC can't be guaranteed a non-smoking room if they want one. I can handle a longer than ideal walk from elevators, or being on any floor, or less than perfect balconies, but I LOATHE the smell of cigarette smoke & it will be a big problem if we ever do get stuck with a smoking room.

When I worked for The Disney Store, I sometimes went up to people who were smoking in the non-smoking areas of the parks and told them that I worked for Disney and they were not allowed to smoke there. Most people complied without hesitation!

I agree that Disney needs to do a better job of enforcing their rules. And I also would like to see all the rooms (AND balconies!!) become smoke-free. But for now, that's probably only a dream....

Niiiiiiiiiiiiice ... :sad2:

With the latest report from the surgeon general, perhaps Disney will start cracking down.

Disney has PLENTY of plain clothes security, and they should start using it on people who smoke in the parks in non-smoking areas to toss them out if they smoke after being told not to. One warning. I got burned with a cigarette moving through a crowd in Fantasyland....the person was holding the cigarette down by their hip, I was moving quickly to get back to my family, and brushed by them. Not a bad burn - but unacceptable.

The door that squeaks the most gets oiled first. Complain and complain to Disney a lot and the more the better. Let them know your feeling on this important issue. The silent majority looses otherwise...smjj

Update: Oh my gosh, I just realized this was my 1000 post. Wouldn't you know it had to be on this subject!!

We've noticed a marked increase the last few times we've been at the Parks as well. I was just there the beginning of this month, and we got stuck behind two smoking ladies while waiting for the parade. They were doing a pretty good job of hiding it whenever a CM went by, since it was dark it was hard to see the smoke unless they were actively puffing.
I did the "Walk in Walt's Footsteps"Tour in Disneyland a few years ago and our guide told us that Disney was "quietly lobbying" in both CA and Florida for a law banning smoking in all public places. Then, they would be able to ban smoking EVERYWHERE in the parks and have the law behind them.

I am a smoker. I don't smoke that much, but am very considerate when I do. I don't smoke in my house, and rarely in my car, so of course I don't want to smoke in my room, but I do want smoking areas.

Smokers can be more considerate, and those that aren't screw it up for the rest of us who are.

One thing I did notice though is that at the smoking areas in the parks, they were always full of non-smokers who just wanted seats, and then got upset you were smoking in the smoking area!! It goes both ways, if everyone was just more considerate, these types of issues wouldn't exist.

Isn't that crazy?? It's a designated smoking area, so you should be able to smoke there hassle-free.

Please know that those of us who don't smoke really appreciate those smokers who are considerate enough to stick to those posted areas!!

I'm a former smoker too-and I tried to be really considerate when I was a smoker. However, I do recall one evening when friends and I were out to dinner, seated in the smoking area and a lady at the next table kept LOUDLY complaining about us smoking. Of course, all that carrying on only made us smoke more, and laugh at her exaggerated coughing, waving her hands and whining. On the way out, I stopped by and said, "just a suggestion, but if you had asked us nicely not to smoke we would have stopped. The place is crowded and you probably got stuck here rather than wait hours. Next time, try asking first before you carry on." The other couples at her table thanked me!
Last year at the Mickey Christmas parade, the only seats we could find were in the smoking area-oh well, that was just too bad for us. I wouldn't have complained about anyone smoking there.

While many of the smoking regulations are Disney regulations, no smoking on the Friendship Boat and no smoking in restaurants are STATE OF FLORIDA regulations. If the boat captain or restaurant waiter or manager won't enforce these regulations, take names and make a formal complaint.

I don't see why they can't do that now. As a business, Disney can make any rules it wants, within the law - even stricter rules. I live in a liberal state :teeth: where smoking is banned in all workplaces.
My apartment complex interprets that to include the hallways and laundry room, because a maintenance or security employee MAY be exposed to the smoke; in addition, they prohibit smoking outdoors in the fenced-in pool area even though the ONLY employees who would be present would be there as tenants, not workers - no lifeguards on duty, any maintenance would be done either outside pool hours or the pool area would be closed completely. Disney can surely institute the same policies...

I would be happy if Disney would just do a better job of enforcing the rules they already have. A total smoking ban would suit me just fine, but it wont matter if they do not enforce it. :confused3
