What's this "bumping" all about?

Can someone explain to me what bumping means? I'm a newbie but this seems to be something common on the DIS. Anyone mind taking a minute to explain? Thanks!!!

It means replying so the thread stays to the top of the list so others see it, a way for it not to get forgotten and unanswered.

Sure! Everytime someone responds to a thread, it puts the thread to the top of page 1, which may get it more exposure. We bump our fridge swap so more people see it and join!

Thats the same reason I do it. Some people here get annoyed when you bump. They say you can subscribe without bumping, and I'm sure you can, but your not helping the thread if you dont at least bump.
