What's the worst thing you've ever been woken up to?

4:00 in the morning, onboard a cruise ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That's when we got to hear the ship's alarm for real (not just the drill).

Seems there was a "little fire" in the engine room.

I received an awful call from the hospital telling me to come ASAP and say goodbye. To this day I still panic when the phone rings in the middle of the night.

Another one was when my mother asked me to pick her up because her car was getting repaired. She said she would call my cell when she was ready for a ride and I thought I would take a quick nap in the meantime. I fell into such a deep sleep so quickly that I didn’t hear the phone ringing right next to me. I woke up hours later to the phone ringing and I was startled that it was dark out. I was shocked when I saw the time and I felt so guilty when I saw all the missed calls!!!

All i can think of right now is my daughter waking me up with vomit plastered into her long blonde hair!! It used to be super fine and super light and it was dyed green in places from whatever food she had eaten.

I can think of a few...

Finding out my dad was being airlifted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack probably tops the list.

Next would be being awakened by nausea, followed by violent, projectile vomiting all over the floor of a hotel bathroom that I spent the evening cleaning up in between recurring bouts of puke. (I'd had two scallops at dinner that night. Turns out I have an intolerance to mollusks that I didn't know about.)

Oh! There's the time when we were staying at the "Ritz" Hotel (not the Ritz Carleton, just the Ritz - not at all the same) in South Beach, Miami for a conference. In the middle of the night, we heard two guys walk into our room. I'm a light sleeper, so I jumped out of bed and screamed "Get out!" at them, which woke up DH. The front desk claimed they had given out the wrong key, but I know that's not right, because these guys didn't try turning on the light when they came in.

Fun: A creepy kid standing next to me or a random earthquake
Deep: The radio waking me up telling me the Twin Towers had fallen. There was a lot of misinformation, so I woke my mom up telling her the Pentagon was bombed. Awful day.

Trivial-ish (but I thought we might die for a few minutes):

About a year ago we were flying home from DL I think it was and I had a drink and took a nap. Woke up remarkably warm--think sauna level-- and looked up to see about 1/4 of the plane frantically pawing at their air vents trying to make adjustments and get air because the temp was SO hot. Only hot air was pouring from the vents so it didn't help. It was maybe ten minutes of this (no staff was addressing the clear malfunction of whatever it was, maybe to not alarm people but that was more alarming) and they finally acknowledged they were trying to take care of it. That was probably the closest I have ever came to freaking the &@#* out in public and I truly thought we were going to die, burning alive in a tin can at cruising altitude.

The 2:00 AM call the love of my life died in a car crash ! I was young at the time but it rocked my world to my core . I just cringe when someone I love is late or I get a call! You just don’t get over that ! Had it happen a few months before that when my mother died at home .i was awoken in middle of night and told she had died she was 32 yrs old.
On a funny note - dog ate bone - we go to bed - later dog runs thru house trying to wake people with bone poo shooting (yes shooting ) out ! Needless to say some SERIOUS house cleaning happened the next day! Lots of bleach lots of walks ! No more bones for that dog !,,

Smoke detector going off at 5:30 am because the fridge motor burned up.

Life alert company called at 2:00 am to tell me my mom had fallen.

Going way back, a co-worker calling me to tell me another co-worker died in a house fire.

My husband waking me in the night to take him to the hospital for what ended up being a kidney stone.

I was shaken awake by 2 firemen telling me to get up and get out as our house was on fire. Scariest thing ever.
When our smoke detector went off, I didn’t even hear it. That made it even worse. My husband woke me.

Scariest was back in 2018 there was an earthquake in Alaska that triggered a tsunami warning for parts of B.C. including Vancouver Island at a little past 4:00am. I was woken up by my mother calling my cell telling me that we had to get out of the house and get to her immediately. We live 1/2 a block from the ocean and she is further inland higher up. My in-laws in Toronto had tried to call us but dh and I both had our cells on do not disturb so they called my mom and because she is on my favorites in my phone she was able to get through to us. We woke our son up, tossed some clothes on and we’re out of the house in less than 3 minutes. I tried to wake my friends next door but they did not answer so we had to leave. We got about 10 minutes up the road, listening to CBC radio when they cancelled the warning and we went home.

I added my in-laws to my favorites that very day.

Almost as scary was when I was 8 and my dad woke us up at 5:00am telling us that our house was on fire...and it was not a little fire, the house was totally on fire and my sister and I watched it burn from our next door neighbors’ house.

Funnier was the time our son woke me up in the middle of the night saying “mommy, I spit”...turns out he vomited on the pale beige carpet outside our bedroom door and he had been eating raspberries which in the middle of the night looks an awful lot like blood when you are not wearing your glasses!

Labor pains and babies crying
Thunderstorms
Neighbors dogs got out and were barking every few mins and neighbors weren’t home.
The smoke detector low battery beeping - the battery always chooses to fail in the middle of the night

A few times a severe episode of dizziness.

And one time the police hammering on my door on my only day off that week at 6:00 in the morning. My downstairs neighbour's appartment was getting flooded and they assumed the water came from my appartment. It didn't. It was another water pipe that had burst, but my place had no problem. Was without water for most of the morning, and due to the construction work that followed... I couldn't go back to sleep.
