What's the worst start to a vacation you have had?

I've had two fairly bad ones (in my standards) in most recent years.

The first was i suffered a really bad allergic reaction on my face (to something that was unknown at the time and not food related) on a 13 hour flight and spent the entire flight plus most of the week following feeling and looking like I'd been stuck by a bee in the face.

The second was last year I travelled to Denmark and Sweden for Eurovision. Caught some sort of bug or virus the day before Eurovision and spent the next few days very unwell and missed all of Eurovision. The only upside is that I was staying with family rather than being ill in a hotel!

Hitting a woman who was in the street on the bus ride to Beaches, Jamaica from the airport. Then being left in the bus parked at the police station when an angry mob surrounded the bus. Luckily another Beaches bus showed up and saved us. Not a great start to a vacation.

Found out 1 week before our 10 anniversary trip to Disney with 2 small kids I was being let go from my job of 10 years, company went bankrupt. Still went on trip.
Driving from Michigan to Fl with 30ft travel trailer. 1st day we blew a tire on the trailer in Lexington. Stopped and was able to find replacement tire and have it put on next day. Get back on road and blew a second trailer tire 100 miles down the road. Put on spare and continued. Drove all day and DH said he wanted to keep driving as long as possible to make up time. Decides to get gas and keep going. No soon are the words out of his mouth and we blow tire #3 and spare is already on trailer. Had to spend the night at a truck stop. Employees helped us find a tire shop to replace the 2 blown tires and the 1 remaining tire that hadn't blown.
We had replaced all tires prior to trip, found out the manufacturer had a bad batch. We now carry 2 spare trailer tires.

Ours was our very first trip to WDW with kids age 5 and 7. The week before our trip, my husbands plant closed unexpectedly. We did have everything prepaid except for meals and souveniers, so we decided to go ahead and go. I am so glad that we did. Many wonderful memories were made on that trip that we will never forget. My husband got a good job when we returned, so it all worked out.

Went to visit my wife's Grandfather in southeastern Illinois for a family reunion. The week before got there he had a skin cancer cut off his lip. He was in his late 80's and he did not follow the Doctors instructions and it got infected. He ended up in the closest hospital, 70 miles away in Effingham, Illinois. His wife was also in her late 80's. So all our plans got blown up, lucky to get a motel for a week in Effingham with my then 7 and 11 year olds. If you have never been to Effingham, it is basically the nations biggest truck stop because six Highways/Interstates intersect through it. But not a lot for a 7 and 11 year old to do. It was an adventure. My kids had never eaten in a restaurant before that had showers. And it was the year before smoking restrictions went into effect in restaurants AND HOSPITALS in Illinois. And EVERYONE was smoking, we are all non-smokers.
But it did work out because all the family was there, and it was clear that Grandpa and Grandma really could not longer live on their own and had to move to an Assisted Living facility. A lot of decisions had to be made and work to be done.

My daughter flew to Iceland. They arrived in the middle of the night and went straight to bed. When she woke up the next morning, there was a bed bug on her comforter. Derailed their plans for the day and they had to go to the next city over to find an available hostel. Spent the whole day doing laundry instead of touring a museum.

my kids were fascinated by the first truck stop they encountered as well-they also were amazed at the idea of showers in a restaurant but they were fascinated at some of the items sold in the attached mini market as well-esp. some electric blankets made to be plugged into the then common car cigarette lighter:smokin:

DH and I call this trip the strawberry milk incident. We were on day one of a 5 day trip to Disneyland. Our daughter was 1.5 years old and I was about 4.5 months pregnant. For lunch we hit up Rancho del Zocalo. I was sitting at the table with our daughter and DH brought out the food, but had gone back for a forgotten item. It was hit do DD starts chugging the strawberry milk he’d gotten her. Moments later she starts spewing all over herself, the table, our food. As I’m trying to catch the vomit I start spewing too. An older lady who worked there who was bussing tables saw us and grabbed a dish bin. The sweet lady tried to south us saying it’s. It bad, things happen, but I was mortified. DH helped her clean up while I whisked our daughter and I away to the family restroom nearby. DD got a cute new dress out if this and we’ve banned strawberry milk. lol.

Then… fast forward 3.5 months and we flew across the country from Spokane to WDW for a multigeneration family trip. I’m not almost 8 months pregnant. Night one I discover my feet are very swollen (and let’s face it, the rest of me wasn’t looking too good either), they couldn’t fit in my shoes, only flip flops. Not good. We called my PN who said it’s either bed rest or a wheelchair. Wheelchair it is. Which you’d think isn’t the worst thing, but it wasn’t all that great. First, DH is pushing me down the ramp at Country Bears and my arm gets stuck between the metal railing and chair. Ouch! Like a traction burn but worse. Then as we’re making our way down Main Street he wheels me into a trolley track and ends up dumping me into the ground. I’m a huge whale splayed out belly down on Main Street. You hear others go “oooh”, yet no one (!) helps me up but DH. That was a horrible day. It’s was also the only time during 4 pregnancies where I swelled.

One hour after the sail-away party aboard the Wish, I slipped in the jacuzzi area of Senses Spa and sprained my ankle. I ended up bedridden for the entire cruise. Most likely, I’ll never sail on the Wish again.
