What's The Worst Cooking Mistake You've Made?

Oh and there was the exploding eggs.

I was boiling a dozen eggs - I wasn't sure how long to boil them and just let them go. I got busy doing something and all the water boiled out.

Scared the crap out of me to hear the *pop* *pop* *pop*

I was sure they were exploding and didn't want to go in the kitchen.

OOOooOOO and and smell of burnt egg shells - ugh

It called for 1 clove of fresh garlic, not knowing what a clove was he used the whole bulb!!! /QUOTE]

I made the same mistake the first time making Beef Bourgion(SP?)
It turned out delicious but only made about a quarter cup per person so the second course was Spaghettios. But I was only 11.

One year I got a recipe on allrecipes.com for a Thanksgiving turkey. It called for seasoning the turkey then closing it tight with foil. I thought I would get fancy and order a 'free range' bird that year. I was told the free range didn't take as long to cook, but I ignored those instructions and just followed my recipe. When I uncovered the pan, the turkey was shriveled, completely dried out, and the meat pulled away from the bones. All I could think of was the scene from Christmas Vacation and that got me laughing, then crying. The dinner table scene paralleled the movie as everyone gnawed on the dried up meat and said it was de-licious, LOL.

When I was 11 or 12 I made cookies and forget either the baking soda or baking powder. The cookies all oozed together in one big mess.

When we were newlyweds, I decided to surprise my DH with dinner of baked chicken, from scratch mashed potatoes, and fresh veggies.

The chicken was ok, the veggies were fine. The problem was the potatoes. I knew he'd be home soon, and they had been in the pot for about 45 minutes, so I figures they were soft enough to mash. That was problem 1. They wern't soft enough, but I figured the more I mashed them, the more normal they'd turn out.

Problem 2 came when I found I didn't have a potato masher. He had just boght us a bunch of kitchen stuff, and I had assumed he had gotten one, but I was wrong. Instead, I found a meat tenderizer. I had no idea what it was, but I figured it would work, so I start pounding the potatoes with it in the pot. Needless to say, the teflon-coated pot didn't stand up well to the pounding.

When I served the potatoes, they still had whole, hard pieces of potato in them.

Now, DH does most of our cooking! ::yes::

Oh Yeah - I did this too. Not with a meat tenderizer but with electric beaters. Ex-H & I thought it was just extra pepper and didn't realize it was the teflon until after dinner & I was washing the dishes. I have to say, teflon doesn't taste all that bad.

It's a toss up between the inedible spaghetti sauce due to dumping sugar in and the spanish rice I made in the slow cooker, the rice was like paste, real paste. :rotfl2:

Making pumpkin pies and forgetting just one tiny ingredient....the sugar! :rolleyes2

A few years ago I was making homemade chili. Ya know, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, ground beef, chili powder, cumin, etc, etc. Well, I accidentally added 3 heaping tbs of CINNAMON to the pot instead of chili powder. I didn't notice my mistake until my husband came home and asked me was I making some kind of pies. It was inedible.

I blew up a can of cooking spray. It went up to the next floor. Now we have a hole in our kitchen.

People that know me know I have a long history of cooking mistakes!

I took a cooking class when I was a freshman in high school. I remember we had to cook steamed rice one day, and I called my teacher over because my rice wasn't cooking. It was because I was stirring around nothing but dry rice in the pot! I thought it was supposed to create steam on its own and that would cook the rice. Unfortunately, my cooking teacher had no sense of humor and was actually pretty mad at me! :confused3

More recently, I was attempting to make blackened chicken for DH. The directions said to use a cast iron skillet and let it get very hot. I let it sit on the burner for a looong time, then added cooking oil. Oops, big mistake! The whole thing went up in flames, and being the calm, leveled headed person I'm known to be, I picked up the pan with my bare hand to remove it from the stove. Not knowing what to do with the flaming pan, I set in on the floor. Luckily the flames did die down right away, but I put a nice burn ring on the center of my kitchen floor, and I had the worst burn on my hand that I've ever had. It's kind of funny when you think I was trying to make "blackened" chicken...little did I know! :firefight

While I have many more stories, I think I'll just leave it at those two!

My first cake mix cake, when I was about 12, I mixed all the ingredients listed on the back of the box and put them in the pan, then into the oven to bake. Forgot to add...the cake mix!!!! LOL I had some weird sort of egg, milk and oil goop.

My mom did that when she was dating my dad.
Great I forgot to hit the quote button, but what she did was use the entire thing of garlic for one clove.

When I was a kid (like around maybe 5 or 6) we had company visiting and I decided I was going to make muffins for breakfast. Now I'd been cooking and baking with my mom basically since I could stand, so I was confident I could do this. They would have turned out nicely too except... my mother had for some unknown reason put the plastic dish rack into the oven for storage. She'd never done that before. I hadn't checked the oven before turning it on, and by the time my muffins were ready to go into the oven - it was on fire. Had to go and wake my mother up to tell her the oven was on fire. After a while the rack cooled down enough and we were able to extract it from the oven. My grandfather decided it looked as good as any modern art and took it home to hang on the wall (and he did too).

The next two weren't my fault, I was just there.
When I was a teenager I was making dinner with a boyfriend. We were making crepes. I can't even remember what the filling was. All I remember is that BF decided that he was going to give the crepe batter another go-through in the blender and pushed the "on" button. Problem was that I had already taken the lid off the blender. Crepe batter is a real pain to clean off of... well an entire kitchen. It even got on the ceiling.

Fast forward to last year, when DFi and I are making breakfast - flapjacks. I don't know what possessed him, but he was not only going to help, he was going to make them. Here's a hint for anyone making them - they don't rise well when you replace the baking soda with salt.

The first year I was married we had Thanksgiving at our house. That went fine so I thought I could be really domestic and make homemade turkey soup from the leftovers. Well I boiled the rest of the turkey off the bone just fine and decided to strain it. I put the strainer in the sink and began to pour the broth into it. Right after I started pouring I realized I never put a bowl under the strainer and I had just poured my broth down the drain!!  That was the first and last time I tried to make soup from scratch. Now it just comes out of a can like it's supposed to ;)

This one is good for a laugh. I hate green beans always have. Well, I picked the string green beans out of the garden; and I was determined to try to make them taste better. I added all kind of spices to the beans. I remember I added sage and all spice to them and all kinds of of spices. They were awful! My dad was very kind and actually ate some. No one else was that stupid! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I haven't made green beans since! ;)

I stepped foot into the kitchen - biggest cooking mistake I ever made.
