Yes, Shan's question would make a great poll. So I figured I'd set one up. Vote for how many points TOTAL you've ever lost over the years you've owned DVC.

Have you ever lost points?

Just wondering if anyone has ever lost a good amount of points due to forgetting baking deadlines, rental contract falling thru, canceling last minute, etc.

Lost 150 pts. one time; but, there really wasn't anything practical I could do about it. Bought OKW 150 pt. add-on from Disney in early August with September use year. None of us could get away on that short of notice. With school starting up, renting in that timeframe would have been more of a hassle than I wanted.

I have lost a total of 3 holding points. We changed a ressie from BCV to SSR at the last minute and SSR was less than BCV, but we wanted to stay at SSR and try it out since we had purchased there. Staying at SSR was more important than the 3 points to us at the time.

None yet, but I have reservations for March, 2005, and will probably lose 2 from 2005 before we return in 2007 to use '06 and '07.

I lost 55 points by trying to give family members a vacation. The points were lost as they decided to divorce instead of vacation. Since they were borrowed from the next use year and were for the month of March when my use year is April I only had about 6 weeks to give them to someone or use them myself. I couldn't use them and no one was available to go, so, I lost them. They were already gone to me, but you hate to see them not used at all. Sad part is that I could have used them this year for another vacation I want to take.

Moral of the story for meas I hate to waste anything; don't give points to someone unless you are willing to go in their place on short notice!

I posted before about what our guide told us.

She calls periodically to check on her members, and one woman who had bought years before had NEVER used her points. Had not rented them to someone, given them to relatives, NOTHING.

I assume money was not an issue??

Our guide said she actually encouraged the owner to SELL her points.

You know, it's kind of odd.

I will let a few dollars worth of food spoil in the fridge at least once a week all year long..............must accumulate some $$$ there................

...................but I meticulously plan the use of my points so I don't lose a single one.

I guess eating is secondary to DVC. As it should be.............

To the member who voted "I've lost 300 to 500 points."

I really hope that was a one time occurence and it doesn't happen to you again.

I hate to see anyone lose even one point!!!

Good one, Kathleena!

I lost a few points within my first few weeks of being a DVC member! When my resale contract became active, Disney told me that I had a few points about to expire at the end of that month. The sellers hadn't mentioned these points to me. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was 7 or less, so not enough for even a single night in an OKW studio. I couldn't figure out a use for them, so I just let them die (sob!)

I plan to do better in the future!

It would take a disastrous event or illness to cause me to lose points. Points are literally money. I won't even book a September trip because our use year is October. And I would be very hesitant to book after all our banking windows close.

Now, if my wife were managing the points, it would be another story...:scared1:

I am lucky in that I have an Aunt who is a fellow DVCer. She constantly going to WDW and will not hesitate to use points for hotels or to plan a last minute trip. She is constantly in borrowing mode.

When we purchased our 2 contracts via resale, they came chock full of banked points - lucky us! There was no way we could have used them all up. Probably would have had to add an unplanned trip or slurge on a much larger unit.

She "took our extra points and then some off our hands." When it was time for a big family trip for us this past January, DA booked some nights in the GV for us to "return the points" to us.

Our arrangement worked out in my favor since I was able to "bank" my extra points for a long period of time by having her use them and then returning them to me later when I need them.

I works because we trust each other and we don't take advantage of each other. Sometimes she's short of a few points and I lend her some and vice versa.

We use to have each other's membership numbers in and just made the reservations ourselves pretending to be each other (after confirming what we needed to borrow first, of course) when the other was too busy to make the call.

This will change, of course, with the new identity security confirmations. I guess we could link up with MS through 3-way calling in the future.

Yep, there are definitely members out there who don't use their points and lose them.

A few years ago I requested a printout of our cryptic points activity statement. DVC mailed me ours with someone else's attached! They must have printed them out together and stuck both sets into a envelope addressed to the member on the top set.

I couldn't help but be nosy. This member went to WDW the first year of membership but didn't bank their remaining points and let them expire. They went the second year also but did remember to bank the remaining points.

However, it goes down hill from there. They let those banked points expire because they didn't make any trips the third or fourth year. Third year's points were not banked and had expired. Fourth year's points were still unbanked and unused.

I about had a heart attack when I saw their activity statement. I was really tempted to write to them to let them know about all their options with unused points (renting, gifting to charity, etc.). Heck, I wanted to say, if you don't use your your points, let me!

But I didn't think that they would appreciate hearing from a stranger! Lol!

I think I called MS to let them know about the mailing error and I think they just told me to destroy my copy and they would just send out a duplicate.

Ya know, despite this poll I bet alot of members aren't as careful as us DISers are about their points!

So far there are 2 votes for "I've lost more than 1000 points!!!"

OUCH.

We are spending $300 in airfare, $150 car rental and borrowing 47 points in October so we don't lose 3 measly points this Fall. It only makes sense in a DVC state of mind.
