What's the most beautiful song you've ever heard?

Annie's Song by John Denver
O Holy Night (as sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir)
Time After Time by Placido Domingo (not the Cyndi Lauper one, the Frank Sinatra song)
O Mio Babbino Caro (O My Beloved Father) as sung by anyone!

Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love"

I can't possibly narrow it down to one. But here are some-

Bedshaped -- Keane
He Used to be a Lovely Boy -- Keane
Anna Begins -- Counting Crows
Hallelujah -- Jeff Buckley
Champagne Supernova - Oasis
The World I Know -- Collective Soul
Save a Prayer -- Duran Duran
Angel -- Sarah McLachlan

I love the song Let There Be Peace On Earth. I cry just about every time it is played.

Suzi

This was the first song I thought of. I remember sitting in church and listening to my mom, aunt, grandma and their friend sing it in front of the congregation. My grandma died a few years ago. I always think of her when I hear it. It is such a beautiful song. It is a great reminder for how to live. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. If you do not know this song, I recommend finding it and listening to it!

Such great songs listed! Here's my (incomplete) list:

"You're Missing" by Bruce Springsteen
"Every Breath You Take" by The Police
"Into the Ocean" by Blue October
"Cherry Pie" by Warrant

Haha!!! Kidding on the last one. Just seeing if you all were paying attention. ;)

:offtopic: Just slightly. I find it interesting to see the diversity of people and in their choice of music.

I took "beautiful" to mean, sweet, melodic and touching. Others chose things that were just meaningful to them emotionally regardless of genre. Hadn't really looked at it that way, but, I guess it works.

Here are a few others that I thought of after I originally posted.

He Needed Me...Anne Murray
In My Life...Beatles
Hawaiian Wedding Song...Elvis
Remember When...Alan Jackson
Here, There and Everywhere....Beatles
Edelweiss...Sound of Music

I know I'll think of more later.

I really love Women's work by Maxwell. I also liked when it was sung in the movie "She's Having a Baby". Don't know who the woman was, but it was good. I also can't hear Sarah McLaughlin's Angel without tearing up. Don't know why, just seems very sad to me. I also love Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, I think someone else mentioned that.

Cinema Paradiso as performed by Chris Botti.

I just melt when I hear this song...

Also:

Windmills of Your Mind as performed by Sting
When We Dance by Sting
Always on Your Side, performed by Sheryl Crow with Sting
What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life? as performed by Chris Botti with Sting.
The Shadow of Your Smile (didn't Sting perform this on the "Soundtrack from the movie Sabrina?")

Hmmm... do we see a pattern, here?!? :)

I also agree with the previous poster's on Barber's Adagio, Time to Say Goodbye, and In This Life.

Hallelujah -- Jeff Buckley

I love that and the version of "Hallelujah" by K.D. Lang. A lot of Leonard Cohen's songs are just beautiful.

"Drops of Jupiter" by Train is the most beautiful ever to me.

"Cherry Pie" by Warrant

Haha!!! Kidding on the last one. Just seeing if you all were paying attention.

LMAO, that should be in a "nails on a chalkboard" thread!!!

My two absolutely favorite songs are "Believe" by Josh Groban and "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Bros. I think both are beautiful; I love Josh Groban's voice. And "Unchained Melody" is my DH's & my song. One of our first dates was to see "Ghost" and when we heard that song we just *knew* it was our song and we had it played at our wedding. Now every time I hear it I smile and it takes me back to our wedding.

I also love:

"Edelweiss" from the Sound of Music;
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from the Wizard of Oz (My BIL tried to play this on his guitar at my MIL's funeral, he managed to get through it, but it was so sad - not a dry eye in the place. So this song is sort of bittersweet for me now)
"Michelle" by the Beatles

(that's just a short list). :)

There's too many to name. These two came right to mind, maybe not technically beautiful but they make me cry.

If I could - Regina Belle
Baby mine - Alison Krauss

Canon in D - Pachelbel

I doubt anyone else here knows this song, it's from an English alternative band in the 80's.

It seems like a love song, but I think it has a spiritual feel to it, it has become "my song" regarding how I feel about my church.

Mission U.K Tower Of Strength lyrics

You raise me up
When I'm on the floor
You see me through
When I'm lonely and scared
And I'm feeling true to the written word
And you're true to me
And still I need more
It would tear me apart
To feel no one ever cared
For me
For me
For me
You are a tower of strength to me
You stand firm and proud
When the wind blows in your face
And when the sun shines in your eyes
You just turn your head away
To me
To me
To me
You are a tower of strength to me
You rescue me
You are my faith
My hope
My liberty
And when there is darkness all around
You shine bright for me
You are the guiding light
To me
To me
To me
You are a tower of strength to me
You are all passion and heart
When I lay in your embrace
And heaven is in your kiss
Salvation lies just a touch away
To me
To me
To me
You are a tower of strength to me

OK, get ready to laugh, but the Pina Colada Song "Escape", just makes me teary every single time. :lmao: Something about him having the love of his life right in front of him, just tears at my heart.

I adore the song "Daughter" by John Mayer.

and to the PP about Will Smith, "Just the Two of Us".....OMG, tears stream down my face. I bought the CD just for that song (well, and Miami too:rotfl: )

It's hard to pick one, because all of their songs are beautiful, but Blackmore's Night's "Ghost Of A Rose" is especially beautiful.:cloud9:

"Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" by the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), published in 1905 as part of his Ruckert Lieder after a poem by Friederich Ruckert (1788-1866).

You can hear a piano and soprano version here:

I prefer the orchestra and baritone (voice) versions myself.

English translation:

I am lost to the world
with which I used to waste so much time,
It has heard nothing from me for so long
that it may very well believe that I am dead!

It is of no consequence to me
Whether it thinks me dead;
I cannot deny it,
for I really am dead to the world.

I am dead to the world's tumult,
And I rest in a quiet realm!
I live alone in my heaven,
In my love and in my song!
