What's the difference between a duvet and comforter?

I have duvet covers, I love them. I have a white down comforter that I put the duvet cover over. So heavenly.

yes, normally a duvet cover is meant to cover a plain white down comforter. kinds like what a pillow case does for the pillow.

I think a duvet is usually down-filled. You buy a duvet cover to protect the white down duvets. A comforter usually hangs halfway down the bed, and a bedspread goes to the floor. (i think!?)

I use an empty flannel duvet cover as a bedspread. I get too hot with a comforter in it, even if the house is cool. (DH can use all the blankets and comforters he wants on his side.) The double thickness of flannel is about right for me. I got mine from the clearance section at Lands End.

A "duvet" is a "down filled" comforter. "Down" are the softest of feathers from a goose. Goose down filled duvets are worth every penny. The duvet cover is used to protect the duvet itself from dirt, stains etc. , much like we use sheets to cover a mattress, and can easily be washed. (it's hard stuffing a whole poly-filled comforter into the washing machine!)
A comforter is filled with synthetic fibres. If it is warmth you are looking for then a down filled duvet is what you need.

We love our down comforter, but the duvet cover adds far too much weight, so we skip it.
