What's the DCL policy towards smokeless tobacco usage?

My FIL chews on cigars, he doesn't smoke them, he just like to have one to chew on (weird I know but he's done it for years). What is Disney's stance on his having one on him outside of the designated smoking areas? He'll never light it up, he just has it there in the corner of his mouth like a person chewing gum. He also sometimes uses chewing tobacco, does he need to keep his use of that to the smoking areas as well? TIA :thumbsup2

I don't know the official policy, but I think he needs to be prepared for CMs to point him toward the smoking sections if they see him with it. I'm guessing it will look to them like he is smoking it, rather than just chewing on it. As long as he is prepared for that to happen regularly then I see no problem with him having it. If the policy says that it is not allowed I am sure someone will let him know.

That's what I'm wondering. I checked the DCL website and couldn't find anything. I may contact DCL directly and find out for sure. Maybe we can use this as an opportunity to get him to quit :thumbsup2

CM's might have a problem with it because other guests might think he's actually smoking it and go to them to complain.

What about e-cigarettes? Are those even smokeless? My mother is driving me insane about not being able to smoke on her verandah... I told her to just quit! Or bring gum. But quitting would be better.

I could see an issue with the unlit cigar due to the perception of smoking. I think the policy is no smoking and as long as he doesn't light up he would be ok. It's probably not worth the hassles though. Concerning chew, again i don't believe there is a policy since there is no second hand smoke involved, however if he would happen to be around food i could see it being a no-no do to food health regulations. I also am not sure the general public would really want to see somebody walking around with a spit cup and using it. When i used chew i would not use it in public for those reasons.

From the DCL website:

Q: Where can I smoke on board?
A: Disney Cruise Line has never allowed smoking in Guest staterooms. In addition, smoking is prohibited in all interior spaces throughout our ships and beginning November 15, 2013, smoking will be prohibited on stateroom verandahs. In an effort to provide a cruise experience that satisfies both our non-smoking and smoking Guests, smoking (including the use of electronic cigarettes) is only permitted in designated areas of the ship.

E-cigarettes are smokeless in that only vapor comes out.

I am extremely allergic to cigarette smoke but the E-cigarettes are totally fine to be near me. I don't get asthma attacks from them. I wish everyone that smokes would consider switching to them.

While DCL has changed the rules of smoking on the verandah's I wouldn't say a thing if someone was smoking an E-cigarette on their verandah. Maybe let them know if you are out there that it's not a real cigarette.

I'm so glad my mom quite smoking!

Last May on the Magic DH was only approached once by a CM about using his e-cig in a non-designated area. Once the CM realized it was e-cig he said ok and nothing more. So in our experience it was not enforced.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll bring it up to my ILs and see what FIL thinks. I know there's some addiction going on there, but I think he does it mostly out of habit. I bet he could cope with plain chewing gum/Nicorette type gum for the week.

I can't see much of an issue with it unless someone mistakes it for an actual cigarette or is uneducated about them. The only way anyone can even inhale the vapor is if you blow it directly into their face as it dissipates so quickly.

I repeat:

In public areas it could easily be confused with a real cigarette.

I would start to panic if I saw someone coming near me with one as I would automatically think it's a cigarette and I'm going to have an asthma attack.

I'm sure the rules are there so that people that are smoking cigarettes don't start smoking any old place they want because they see someone else smoking (an e-cigarette) in a non-designated area.

I've only ever been on one verandah but on the one I was on you would have to be right up to the white wall for anyone else to even see you out there smoking. So I really don't see how they would be able to enforce a person from smoking an e-cigarette since there isn't any toxic fumes released to cause anyone any problems.

Last cruise I almost had an asthma attack in the hallway outside my inside stateroom because of all the smoke coming from the room across the hall. The CM said it was coming in from the verandah. All I can say is Bull. There is no way it could have travelled that far with that much smell unless the verandah was full of smokers and the door was left wide open to the verandah.

Actually, due to a lack of federal regulations on e-cigarettes, health consequences of inhaling vaporized nicotine are unknown.

I don't think I'd necessarily walk around the ship smoking an e-cig, but I don't see how DCL would even know if you used one in your stateroom. My DH uses one and I am asthmatic and quite sensitive to smoke, and I can't notice the smell of it at all even when we are in the car. The secondhand smoke from his clothes when he smokes real cigarettes bothers me a lot more.

Maybe DCL is counting on "personal responsibility" for people to adhere to requested policies?

I know it's almost a foreign concept, but a person's honor used to be something to be proud of.

I get what you're saying, but my comment I guess is more along the lines of wondering why an e-cig would not be allowed in those areas, since there is no smell, smoke, etc which is what bothers people about smoking on verandahs and in staterooms. I mean, it's my understanding that one of the purposes of e-cigarettes, aside from helping smokers to quit, is being able to smoke them in an area where you could not, or would not want to, smoke a real cigarette. As I mentioned above, one place my DH uses his frequently is on long car trips. It's much preferable to having to stop for smoke breaks and certainly preferable to smoking in a car (which I don't allow in my car anyway!).

Anyway--certainly not arguing that this is DCL's policy. I would like to see it revised.

:thumbsup2 Agree! This isn't the pirate code and more like a guideline... pirate: it's the published rule, why discuss enforcement or getting around it, just follow it!

I don't know the reasons behind it but I'm seeing lots of places setting the same rules for e-cig, our office building just clarified they need to use same designated areas, as well as some restraunts here.

I'd like to think it's a precautionary move, as we don't know for sure whether e-cigs are harmful or not. Or whether there are any residual chemicals hanging around after use that are or are not harmful. And that kind of information will be a long time coming. Remember, 30-40 years ago, they were saying cigarettes were "safe".
