What's the Current Cable TV Situation?

We were down at the fort most recently last October, before the switch over to the digital TV service. Currently planning to book again for late October of this year for our F&W fix.

What's the current situation with the digital TV? I've heard if you hook in directly with coax on an old analog system you'll atleast get ~13 channels or so? Are they still sending a limited amount of channels via analog? If you need the converter box, does the Ft seem to have an ample supply, or is 1st come basis still keeping the converters limited? We have a digital to analog converter for the RV antenna, but I know we'd still need to somehow hook up the Fort's digital converter somehow.

I think our best option to just hook the coax direct and live with the limited analog channels if they're still provided.

Thanks

I was very disappointed with everything. We couldn't get any of the digital stations without the converter....which is weird because I thought we were supposed to be able to get the digital cable with the newer TVs. It was a $125 deposit that they credited once you returned the kit. It's first come first served with the kit. We hooked up the outside TV with the kit and used coax cable for the TVs inside. Not sure why, but that's what we ended up with.

We have inmotion satellite, but happened to be in a shaded site on that trip. On our last trip, we made sure that we were able to get a satellite connection so we didn't have to even deal with the cable set up. You will get some channels on a coax connection, but more with the digital cable converter. Ask for one at check in.

Our experience was very frustrating, but if you have trouble once you get to your site, they will send an engineer to help. And he's very nice.

Brocktoon,

I asked about the tv situation when I checked into the Fort today.

The CM said the Fort is currently in a state of transition.

I brought my tv to watch the Masters golf tournament this weekend.

I hooked up my coax and scanned my channels and only found 2-6 :furious:.

Then I noticed my Input selection was "Antenna". :duck:

I changed my input to "Cable" and did the autoscan again (you HAVE to scan the channels).

This time I found 6 analog and 75 digital.

One channel is a slow scrolling channel guide which is Directv (which I have at home).

The channels are in the correct order but the numbers are off. For example, the Golf Channel shows channel 75 in the guide but it is on channel 24-4 on my tv (in the proper order, just the numbering is off).

I can live with it the way it is as long as it's all there. But who knows how long the transition will last? :confused3

An edit to my previous reply:

The channels are NOT in the order listed in the on-line guide as I said. There are "channel chunks" where they are consecutive but I had to hunt for some channels that were out of order from what the guide said. I did find them but it took a little searching.

Oh well, at least I know where ESPN, CBS, and the Golf Channel are.

As fyi I went up to the Outpost this morning and they do have a channel guide printed on paper that lays everything out for you. I got one and will scan/place it here when I get home.

And rajak, us Bama fans call it BSPN. :worship:

brocktoon,

Here is the tv channel handout from the Fort this week.

There were a few channels 2-6 and about a couple in 29-42. I lost track of what was what.

Most of what you want is probably there. You just have to look for it.

Glad you could find BIG10-SPN. :)

PS - Scupper, I know you'll want to set the DVR for tomorrow's Alabama spring game and watch the national champions prepare for the next season. It will be on BSPN2 at 3 p.m. Eastern. I'll be there sitting next to the Million Dollar Band in the stands. My oldest will be playing but he is retiring from MDB after two seasons and two natties (as in National Championships). This will be his last MDB event. My younger son (from my TR) will also be playing (the MDB uses the spring game as a recruiting event for high school band members and my son already has an MDB scholarship $$$$ and will be a member). So I will continue to be an MDB Dad (got the t-shirt literally) for at least one more season.

Thanks all for the replies ... I forgot all about this post, and feel bad for taking so long to get back to it.

Our RV still has older analog TV sets. We do have a digital to analog converter, but that is only for our antenna feed. Since our TVs don't have digital tuners, it sounds like most of the channels Bama_Ed listed won't come in on our TVs via the coax feed?

But, am I correct in thinking that we'll still get a few basic analog channels on our TVs hooked directly to the coax? Although 6 analog channels isn't all that great, we can probably get by as I don't plan on spending all day watching TV. Just having the major affiliates will probably do as long as I still bring plenty of beer to keep me entertained.

Brocktoon,

You will get the network feeds on channels 2-6 only if you hook up to the analog tv.

Ed, Were you in the MDB? I played in the band "that did not limit their value" across the state with my brothers and assorted 2nd generation members back in the day. Most of us are out of state now and costly out-of-state tuition prohibits crossing the state line to attend either school.

I did hear on ATL radio that there were over 160,000 attending the two A-Day games Saturday.

Ken, nope I wasn't that musical and gave up after several years of classical piano lessons. So I didn't do MDB. Cool that you and other family members were in college band and share that bond. My first son did it, second son is going to do it, and DD is considering Color Guard in the high school band. Hopefully they are the start of the multi-member family involvement like you enjoyed.

I hear what you say about out-of-state tuition. My brother and family are in the Atlanta area and he has two in Ga Tech. He's a Bama grad too but couldn't swing the cross-state line thing.

Yep, Bama had about 75k and Auburn 83k supposedly for the spring games. Personally I think those numbers are inflated since everyone sits with a little extra elbow room in the stands and in a space where 10 folks might sit in the fall there are about 6. But Auburns was higher because of the new coach/staff and the final rolling of the Toomers Oaks. They were cut down this week and I think I read the plans are to use the wood to sell momentos or keepsakes with proceeds going to a scholarship fund. Maybe you can get one to decorate the inside of your RV.
