I cant get direct tv where I am so that's out. My options are pretty much comcast or fios. I need internet. I'd like to keep my landline. I don't much care about the TV one way or the other. My current (extremely overpriced "bundle" from fios runs out in may). What are my options? I need to free up some money and this seems painless.

No one is going to be able to tell you unless they live or know about the services local to you.

But I would advise you to look into internet only then add a VOIP phone like Vonage.

When you call to cancel your current service they will likely offer you a lower rate or a new contract as well but your results may vary.

Do you know anyone nearby who doesn't have either service? Go online and use their address to search for pricing. Then call to cancel, and when you get to Retention, ask for that offer.

comcast has or had economy services: local calling $39.99, economy internet $39.99, basic basic cable varies but figure around $20. Ten dollar discount for having at least two of the three services. Plus equipment.

Dumping the cable TV would be a big savings. I also dumped my landline and got OOMA. Unlimited calling/long distance is $5 per month. I have Comcast Internet. I was paying $40 per month but switched to a faster service when I got Netflix and am paying $65 per month now.

Okay, your profile says you live in Maryland. DirecTV is available in the entire state of Maryland, so that part confuses me. But that doesn't address the internet or landline part of you needs anyway.
At least out here in California, there is no cheapest way to get internet and TV. Only the landline is cheap. They want to bundle everything here for $250 a month. Unbundled I pay $130 for Dish Network (and I wish there were a cheaper option to get the channels I watch), $33 for the landline from A-T& T and $60 for Internet through A-T& T U-verse. True I do get more on TV bundled, but every extra they toss in if stuff we don't watch.

I pay $40 for Fios internet. I think I also pay $10/month for the router but will probably buy a used one off eBay. Just started using YouTube tv which is $40/month but I save a bit by paying with google play gift cards. I like YouTube tv because the cloud dvr is unlimited. If you need a landline, I’m not sure what the best deal is. I just got rid of mine this week.

What do you do in place of cable? I don't think my tv is all that smart, and my windows face away from the local stations - 15-25 miles in the wrong direction.

Before you hit ebay, try Amazon and Best Buy.

For some reason the exact location of my house doesn't get it. They've come out and couldn't get it to work.

I have OOMA for my landline - $4/mo
AT&T Uverse (think it's 18mbs speed) for internet - $53/mo
Netflix, HULU, Amazon Prime, and antenna for TV - approx. $29/mo

So I pay about $86 for everything per month.

I just use Netflix. I haven't missed the local stations at all. None of them in Seattle has a product that is worth watching. I prefer using the internet for news and using AdBlockers so I don't have to watch advertisements non-stop. Football is unwatchable now days as they take 15 minutes of action and stretch is out to 3.5 hours.

That's about what we pay here in CA too. No cable, but that's the price for landline and internet. They just tried to up us to $80/month for internet (AT&T). I had to jump through a few hoops to get it back down.

@tvguy : have you checked StreamTV?

If we had cable at our house, I would have considered getting this. But we don't, so we aren't.

I haven't looked at it specifically. We are Oakland A's fans and similar services don't offer that, so I am stuck with a Satellite dish or cable.

I’m in Southern California and pay about $100/month for a bundled AT&T Internet / Direct TV choice package. I’ve been at that rate for almost 3 years.

I almost bundled with A-T& T when they were affiliated with Dish Network, before they bought DirecTV.

DirectTVNOW is like $50 a month, no contract no satellite but you do need a FireStick, Roku, or one of those devices in order to stream via internet. College son has had it for a few months and likes it much better than SlingTV

everyone with direct tv needs to lower their rates by threatening to cancel right as game of thrones is ending it's run. i was talking with the kid at the at&t store recently about how the end of the show will impact the number of direct tv subscribers they have and he said that they are getting special training to deal with it and will be offering some crazy deals to prevent mass cancellations.

I also live in Maryland and we have Verizon Fios. My husband works from home and likes their internet the best. We have the triple play and cut our bill in half when it came time to renew. I got rid of the DVR, sent all the boxes back but one, kept our landline and switched to custom TV. It was an adjustment but we don't watch a lot of TV.

So how much are you paying? We have the triple play also and I'm paying about $200 per month after taxes.
