Has anyone ever had a really significant upgrade? I was wondering how far up you could potentially get upgraded.

I was upgraded once-from a cat 9 to a cat 6. I was thrilled!

We book a GUAR cat 12 and was upgraded to a cat 8. Not to shabby, LOL. We were so excited. We were not expecting it all.

Usually, you are upgraded to the next "thing." An inside is upgraded to a porthole. A porthole is upgraded to a verandah. A verandah is upgraded to a big room. A 4 goes to a 3. A 3 rarely goes higher...but there is always a chance.

THink about it from DCLs standpoint. Say (just theoretically) that a cat 3 family cancels. If they do the above, they make 4 families happy over upgrades. If they upgrade an 11 to a 3, they have one happy family.

Obviously, the lower your booked category, the better your chance of an upgrade based only on the number of cabins above your category--the chance that someone in one of those cabins will not be sailing for some reason.

Our first (and only until Dec. DCL) cruise we booked the cheapest, lowest category interior GTY. We were upgraded to an exterior w/ a LARGE window. We were thrilled! Liked the light...but neither DH nor I could look at the ocean..made us seasick! We were fine as long as we didn't look!

I have never heard of an upgrade to one of the suites - Cat 3 and higher are the biggies, one bedroom and up and come with the concierge perks etc. If I was Cat 4 and upgraded I would be blown-away. We did ask at check-in in Feb '05 on our 4 day Wonder if this ever happens even if you pay for the upgrade and the girl just laughed (nicely of course)

There have been a few (very few) people here on the DIS that have been complementry upgraded to a cat 3 room (and I think that it was NOT from a cat 4 room). It does and can happen, but the rule is even more true with the getting upgraded to a cat 3 than other upgrades - they just don't happen on DCL very often.

We were upgraded from a Cat.10 to a Cat.6. We were all so excited, I was screaming at work everyone thought something was really wrong with me.

This doesn't always apply.

There have been people upgraded from cat 11 to cat 6 - instead of moving cat 11 to a cat 8 and cat 8 to a cat 6 (which makes 2 families happy). Go figure.

We weren't all that thrilled because of the solid wall on the verandah, but it was pleasant to try for our first verandah. But we agreed we would not pay for a solid walled verandah cabin, would be just as content back in our usual cat. 8 on deck 7. Still, nice to get an upgrade. That one was booked as GTY, but then two days later was assigned a room #, and then upgrade notice was 30 days in advance, by telephone and fax. Doc's came with old #'s, for the 8, but we just crossed that out and wrote in the new #'s--the new is what was in the computer, and there was no delay in the luggage reaching our stateroom, and the bon voyage celebration I had ordered was waiting for us in the cat. 5 stateroom.

So like many have said, nice if it randomly happens, but we booka stateroom that we want and that we know we will enjoy. Anything of an upgrade is just pixie dust after that.

On our first cruise we were upgraded from Cat 3 to the Cat 1 Roy Disney suite...sweet. We've sailed multiple times since the Roy suite - always in a cat 5 and haven't been upgraded since.

On our 1st cruise, we cruised in a cat 11. We booked a 2nd cruise and booked a cat 11 but were upgraded to a cat 8. Booked our 3rd cruise and booked a cat 8- got an 8. The next 2 cruises- category 8 and cat 10. The next cruise we booked a cat 7 and got a 7. The last cruise we booked a category 9 and upgraded at the port to a cat 4 for $800 for 4 people -7 night. I feel lucky to have been upgraded once but it has been very bad for my pocketbook. If we wouldn't have been upgraded, we would still be happy in our category 11. Go figure!

On our first cruise - 9/2003 - we were one of the extremely lucky ones ( I guess as it's costing me a bundle every time I cruise now).....

But we were upgraded from a Cat. 5 to a Cat.3. How, why - I have absolutely no idea....... (unless they figured me for a sucker... and would have to have a 3 in the future....)

We never got a call - but because I made the reservations last minute and there was some confusion - I checked every few days on the website and noted the room number had changed.... When I called they said - "yep - aren't you lucky" - I was so excited - and it made the cruise phobic wife very happy.....

We've now been on 3 cruises (3, 4 and 10 day) and have 3 more booked (4, 7 and 11 day) all in Cat. 3's....

We cruised in May this year. Booked a cat 8 and upgraded to a cat 4! We were so thrilled! We just booked for 4/29 cat 6. If we are upgraded, great. If not, we're very happy with what we've got.

"It can only get better, not worse" is what DH always says! How true!

If there is still "main seating" available for dinner... would that tell you that ship isn't very full yet? :confused3

Has anyone been upgraded on more than one cruise? Or does it appear to be a once in a lifetime kind of thing??

We were upgraded last year from a cat 6 to a cat 4. Another upgrade would be great...but I won't hold my breath!!

We've been upgraded on more than one cruise. We were upgraded on our first DCL cruise and didn't dare dream it would happen again, but it did.

We have only cruised once, DCL in 2003 aboard the Wonder. We were booked in a cat. 4. We were doing the land/sea package staying at the Poly before our cruise. Imagine our surprise when we returned to our room from a long day in the parks and saw our light flashing with a message. It was telling us that we should stop by the cruise desk in the morning because we had received a complimentary upgrade! We were so excited and moved to a cat. 3. I guess it was just a little "pixie dust"! We haven't cruised again but hope to in a couple of years.
