Whats the best sunscreen/oil to wear to get a SAFE tan?

Yep...No SAFE tan. A tan is a result of damage to a skin cell. A doctor once warned that you cover anything you'd like to keep.

I've used a spray on tan offered by a local spa that you may have seen them use for beauty pageants (it's airbrushed onto the skin). It would be expensive to maintain but not bad for a one time use for a special trip and fades off over about 2 weeks.

If you must tan, stick with a SPF 30. I tan well but have fair skin, and have still burned in FL with SPF 30. You must reapply during the day!

I personally wear SPF 50 (baby formula) and still come home with a tan. Just not the same dark, wrinkle-causing, pre-cancerous-mole-changing tan that I used to get. It's out of style to be super-tan anymore, anyway.

AMEN!

The "safe tan" is a myth!

I like the sprays as I find I tend to miss fewer spots then I did when I used the lotions.

agreed, I much prefer spray tan to lotion tan or natural tan (being in the sun).

I know this isn't good, but if I want a tan while I'm outside, sometimes I'll mix suntan lotion with my tanning lotion (from when I used to tan in the beds). It was a tip suggested to me from one of the attendants at the tanning place I go to. Not the healthiest option, however.

Coppertone waterproof lotion with the 15 SPF got pretty good reviews as far as getting a little color without burning. I read the reviews on drugstore.com if you want to check it out.

I like the Jergens Natural Glow also. It's fake and it gives you a nice glow so it doesn't look funny.

If not, hit up a Mystic Tan, I wouldn't do it directly before your trip because you won't be used to how it reacts to your skin and how to care for it, but it's a good thing to have, starting off with a nice glow then heavily applying sunscreen when you get there.

Look who's talking though, I have a multi-hundred dollar tanning package at my local tanning salon....... kind of hypocritical. Oh well, I tan easily so I don't need to go more than once a month for 10 minutes. Plus, there are far more worse things I can be doing.

Along this topic, can anyone recommend a sunscreen for sensitive skin? I usually use the Neutrogena one (30spf, I think), but it tends to make my skin pasty looking. Do the sprays come in a sensitive form? Thanks.

Since my mom had a cancerous melanoma removed and also since I've had kids, I have a new mantra that I repeat to myself every time I find myself yearning for a tan like I used to have. (I am pale and blond.) "Pale is healthy, healthy is beautiful." It might be cheesy, but it helps me keep my priorities in order.

I was diagnosed two years ago (at age 26) with stage 3B Melanoma; trust me when I say that a tan is NOT worth it.

For the fake stuff-I use Jergen's Natural Glow, it's hard to mess up.

I was diagnosed with Basal Cell cancer last April and have had 4 MOHS and plastic surgeries last year alone and I am not through. It was a very tiny spot on my nose and they had to take a large chunk out of my nose.
I am dark skinned Anglo female who grew in the sun of New Mexico.
I am slathered in Neutrogena sunscreen every day. I agree, a tan is not worth it.
