Forgive me for the stupid question, but we have never been and are planning our first trip. THEN someone tells me they used to live out by la and used to call it Anacrime!!!

Then he said that was like 10 years ago and its different now, any feedback on this??

Thanks a bunch!

We have never had a problem or felt at risk in the area. We usually walk back and forth to the park/ hotel early in the morning and late at night- never any issues.

We feel very safe outside DLR. It is nice - and clean. No worries.

Starting in early 1997 - 1999 there was a serious renovation done to the city of anaheim, by the city of anaheim. Just as DCA was being built, so were new street signs, further city lamps, bus stops, a new "trolley-like" bus system and more.

Part of the reason anaheim *felt* dangerous prior to that was simply because most lamps were dead. The area was very dark, and some rather "seedy" hotels were still around. There were tons of tourist traps. (Oh god, anyone else remember melodyland?)

In any case, new hotels, a 7-11, new restaurants and new small businesses have taken the place of those. The renovation has extended all the way into garden grove (where the Hyatt technically is).

In any case, it's a much safer environment in the past decade, and you should be fine.

Never had any problems in the area. Also, 9 times out of 10, there will be many other families around you, walking to and from near-by hotels also. I always feel safe.

Stay near the tourist areas and you'll be fine.

I agree with Woody. Otherwise there are some not so nice areas close by.

I have been for the last three years and haven't felt unsafe when we were there. Just be sure use common sense and to take the "normal" precautions, you know don't go around flashing money, etc ... I haven't walked any where by myself, but I wouldn't be afraid to walk to McD's from the hotel to by myself. Also like Lithium_picnic said, there is usually always other families walking around you so your family is never really "alone."

Now LA is a completely different story, but I felt safe in Anaheim walking around the Disney Resort area. It really is very nice and there is some beautiful landscaping. I will post one of my fave pics when I get back to my computer. It is walking down Katella right next to the parking lot.

Disneyland is not in the best of neighborhoods, not is it in the worse. I wouldn't go walking up and down Harbor at 2 am alone, but you shouldn't have any problems at normal times. When the parks close at midnight there are lots of people walking around to the various hotels, so I wouldn't be too concerned. When our daughter was little we only had one car and she was a night owl. So we would quite frequently go to DL. When it was time for dad to go to work, he would go work and we would play until the park closed at midnight. We would then walk around the DL hotels and downtown disney until he got off work at 2 am.

Most of the area is not that great. The area surrounding Disneyland is fine and seems safe as long as you don't stray too far away. I went this year and had not been there in about 3 years - I was very surprised to see how much things had changed, very cleaned up. Most of Harbor Blvd. seems okay, you'll notice when you're no longer in the touristy area. Same with Katella, nicer the closer to Disneyland and more "residential pirate:  :badpc: " the farther? further? ( I don't know how to use 'em) you get.

Just stay in the resort area and you're fine- some surrounding areas aren't the greatest, but there's worse placed in So Cal than Anaheim
