Whats that smell

Anyone noticed the totally obnoxious smell around the middle of Epcot. Especially strong around the Coca Cola Ice Station Cool location. Sewage???? It is horrible. It is around that area but permeates all over the middle of Epcot. I have noticed this for years. In fact, in Mousegear it was so strong the last couple of trips that we had a hard time shopping there. Anyone else noticed this??

Yes!!!

I thought the employee bathroom must have overflowed or something. :scared::crazy2:

I've always thought it had something to do with the fountain.

I've never noticed it. But I don't think I've ever shopped in Mousegears. We always visit club cool tho.

I read somewhere that it has to do with the types of plants that are around mousegears. That they give off a bad odor. Not sure how true it is, but I really hope if it was a backed up sewer that it wouldn't take Disney years to fix it.

Welcome to Florida. What you're likely smelling is our refreshing sulfur-filled water! :lmao:

I've never smelled it - maybe it's from who you are with, not where you are? ;)

I think it's the plants as well. I would smell the exact same nasty odour near my building at POP and it was coming from the plants.

It's not the plants, it's the sprinklers that automatically water the plants.

There's a nursery near our home and when they're watering their fields, if we're driving by we HAVE to roll the windows up because the stench from the water is too strong. It smells like sewage processing but it's just fields of plants.

We noticed from our first visit to WDW back in the 80's that the drinking water had a foul taste/smell to it. You got the same odor from water fountains; I even noticed it when I made some business trips (off WDW property) to the Orlando area in the late 90's and early 2000's, specifically in an office building that had a fountain in its lobby/atrium area.

They seem to have cleaned up the taste/smell in the drinking water and in the water in the resorts, suggesting to me that they have started using something different to treat it. But, if they are just using recycled water in fountains and/or to water plants, that might account for the smell.

I guess over the years I have gotten insensitive to it, so when I get a whiff of it I just think "there's the Florida water smell".

We've noticed it as well. It's more methane based than sulphur, and it's definitely defined within a certain area and apparently isn't consistent. We noticed it on some days while not on others.

It makes sense that it could possibly be the landscape irrigation system, especially if Disney is recycling sewage. Many aerobic septic systems work on the same principle, the "treated" sewage is used to irrigate landscaping.

I just took it as an opportunity to accuse my 8 year old of not holding his toots....

At wdw and dlr I notice that funk whenever I'm near landscaping and especially if it has recently been watered. I think it's the probably-reclaimed water used for watering.

Wow! It's threads like this that make me feel unconscious:confused3. I've been to Epcot, Club Cool and Mousegears too many times to count and never smelled anything memorable either + or -.

I noticed a few of the boat rides at WDW smelled musty. (Small world, movie ride, etc)

The gift shop at POR stunk, I could tell they had water leak in there.

Yup. That totally makes sense!

Maybe it's a giant dead mouse? ;)

In all honesty, we have smelled it in the same area at EPCOT. We smell a lot of funky things at WDW. From the musty water smell on nearly every water ride, to the manure infested mulch that they started importing from AK...the World is certainly more ripe than it used to be.

Is that what they're doing? I was entering MK last September and the planters just inside the gates stunk of manure and I remember wondering how the horses got off Main Street . . . .

As far as indoor smells go, I think the worst is the toy store in the German pavilion. It smells like some combination of sauerkraut and a nasty diaper that have been sitting there for years. I can't hardly stand to even pass through that shop, and the smell seems to be there every single time I go in.

Of course, there could be sauerkraut and an old diaper in there. I saw a half a sandwich stuffed down in a planter in a TS restaurant a few years ago - yuck!

OMG my best friend and I were there on the 3rd and experienced the exact same smell as we entered Mouse Gears from the fountain-facing side! IT WAS HORRENDOUS!
