BOSTON - Former Oregon State outfielder and current Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was named an American League All-Star on Sunday.

In doing so, he became the third former Oregon State player to be named a Major League All-Star, joining Don Johnson in 1944 and Ken Forsch in 1976 and 1981.

Ellsbury, who played at Oregon State from 2003-05, is batting .302 in 82 games for the Red Sox this season, tallying 23 doubles and nine home runs. He has also swiped 26 bases this season, placing him third in Major League and first amongst all AL players.

"I was really happy for Ellsbury, because I think this probably meant a lot to him," Boston manager Terry Francona told MLB.com. "I don't need to talk for him, but (this symbolizes he's) kind of arrived. What he's doing, it's recognized throughout the league. I think that's terrific."

Jacoby Ellsbury’s American League peers knew what they were doing when they voted the Red Sox center fielder onto the All-Star team with the player ballot.

Ellsbury possesses the kind of foot speed his mates and rivals covet. He put that speed to work out of the batter’s box, on the bases and in the outfield during yesterday’s 9-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.

“It’s a dream come true and I think it is pretty neat to be selected by your peers,” said Ellsbury. “They are the one who see you play everyday throughout the whole season, so to be selected by them is very special.”

Ellsbury recorded four of the Sox’ 11 hits by going 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base. He beat out an infield single in the seventh, and robbed Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion with a great leaping catch against the wall in left-center in the third.

“I try to be a complete player,” said Ellsbury. “I try to do it on the defensive side, on the bases and when I’m at the plate and use it (speed) to my advantage.

Today I had the opportunity to display it in a number of different ways.”

The Sox were placed in a 7-0 hole due to a dreadful start from John Lackey that lasted just 21⁄3 innings. The bullpen stabilized the situation and Ellsbury got the game-long comeback going in the fifth.

J.D. Drew opened the frame with a single and went to second base when Marco Scutaro walked. Ellsbury drove both runners home with a triple into the center field triangle. He was approaching second when he saw center fielder Rajai Davis misplay the hop. That opened the door for Ellsbury’s first three-bagger since Sept. 23, 2009, at Kansas City.

“Right as it bounced I knew I had a good shot, especially with us being down in a situation like that,” said Ellsbury. “You’ve got to know you have triple and there’s not going to be a play. I knew once it hit the ground I had a triple all the way.”

Ellsbury’s leadoff single in the first inning was his 500th career hit in 432 games. Since 1920, the only Red Sox outfielders to reach 500 quicker were Ted Williams (385 games) and Dom DiMaggio (428).

“Obviously you want the win, but I thought we did a good job keeping our composure and getting quality at-bats,” said Ellsbury.
