What's in YOUR owner's locker?

Especially for those of us who fly to WDW, Owner's Locker is a savings. Almost all of the airlines now charge to check bags--many now charge even for the first bag, and the charge is EACH way. Multiply that by multiple travelers and multiple trips and the cost really skyrockets. Having a lot of miscellaneous stuff already there makes packing and unpacking SO much easier. We are wondering whether we should get a second locker to keep only clothes for various seasons (and free up some space at home!) Then we could go to WDW with almost nothing. When I think of the cost of going to WDW--DVC costs and plane tickets and park tickets and rental car and souvenirs and food-- the Owner's Locker fee is nothing. Besides, I just love the feeling of having my stuff there. It makes me feel like WDW really IS my second home!

I don't have an owner's locker, but anticipate I'll be buying a couple rubbermaid containers and keeping them in my dad's garage over in Clermont - I'll just swing by there before/after each trip.

Thanks for the list - it's a great start!

I won't answer for everyone, but here are some reasons it's valuable for us personally:

  1. We never rent a car. We've been using DME lately. We have no way to buy those items upon arrival.
  2. We like to travel with carry on luggage only - with the limitations on liquids in carry-ons, some of these items would be impossible.
  3. Most of the items in our locker aren't things we'd go buy at Publix. My husband's razor. Our guest of honor pins. A pretty good sized fan we use to sleep. Stuff like that.
  4. We can keep some of our personal items where we use them - at WDW - instead of storing them at home. DVC is our "second home," so it should feel like it (with pictures of our canine and feline kids in a frame, a big bottle of my favorite scented lotion, the tea bags I like to use to make iced tea, etc.)
  5. We can take the locker on DCL - making it a whole lot easier to pack for a cruise.
  6. If it's a wash (i.e., spend $99 per year vs. buy $100 of stuff every time you go to Orlando) I'll choose the convenience any day.

1. We rent a car. If you're not renting a car, I can certainly see how it would be more difficult to purchase these items "in town".
2. We're checking 4 pieces of luggage, in addition to carry-on. (No extra charge on JetBlue :thumbsup2 ) With Magical Express, the bags mysteriously find their way to our room on their own!
3. If you have a big fan that you need on vacation, I can see where that would be a challenge to fit on a carry on. :)
4. We don't bring pictures on vacation. I certainly respect your wish to do so.
5. We don't cruise.
6. It's not really a wash. It's $99 per year PLUS the cost of everything you put in the locker.

Essentially, the value in Owner's Locker is unique to each individual. If you believe that you need things on vacation that are not possible to carry with you or purchase in Orlando/Lake Buena Vista, then this may very well be a good value to you. Since "value" is in the eye of the beholder, I will only say that I respect your view and congratulate you on finding a product that provides you value. Based on our travel habits, I'm just not able to realize the same value.

Thank you for your reply. I enjoy the opportunity to understand other individual's views when they differ from my own. Even though in my own mind, I'm always right. ;)

Exactly! Since we now have to pay even for the FIRST bag on NWA, I'll pack extra light and just have a carry on to worry about. If I can get all the "stuff" that would classify as liquids in the owner's locker, it will be an easy pack for sure!

Glad that we can agree to disagree then! This is definitely one of those things that some people would value/appreciate more than others!

Thanks to your ideas, I have added quite a few things to my list! Here were a couple more my DH came up with...small case of "tools". These are in case he needs to perform some repair on his laptop or a suitcase etc. Last year a wheel came off our rolling bag, and he moaned the whole trip that he could have fixed it if he only had a few tools!

I looked at Owner's Locker.

A $75 membership fee (plus tax) on top of $99 per year, just seems expensive to me. Not to mention the Premium plan that costs $179 per year.

I was calculating the price of the items that I'd put in storage, and it adds up to close to the price of the storage, if not a little less.

Buy items when you get there - $100
Owners locker - $75 Membership Fee + $99 per year + you still have to buy the product that your putting in the locker $100 = $274

$274 vs. $100, I'll take the $100 every time.

Sorry, not trying to be negative, I just can't see the value in this. :confused3

First of all, the $75 membership fee is one time only - so it's not $274 every time, it's $99 per year after the membership fee.

And some of the stuff I would store in it isn't a purchase-every-time item. Like my DS's stroller fan, bath toys, coffee mugs, ponchos, and Pal Mickey. Should I buy a Mickey fan every time I go? Or coffee mugs?

Airlines are charging for bags now and traveling with liquids and sharp objects keeps getting more complicated - having a Locker will help take the headache out of travel. Buy a big container of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap - don't have to worry about that. Coffee filters come in packs of a thousand (I swear) and I only use 10-12 on a trip so I either pack them and bring them home where I don't need them (then have to remember to pack them next time) or leave them there to be trashed. Why create the extra waste?

I can see how the price can make is seem cost prohibitive. But if you use it to it's fullest potential, I think you can make it very cost effective.

My DH originally thought the cost was high too, but it doesn't take many baggage charges to make you realize the cost is reasonable. I totally agree that the convenience is the thing, and even economical when you consider the cost savings of buy and keeping those larger sizes of shampoo etc.

Now...back to the original topic....Any other great ideas to add to the list?

Wow, Deb! I thought mine was full! Glad I don't have to lift yours! :rotfl2:

Oh, gosh, I know. I really need to figure out what isn't really necessary. Of course, the food items are those small, sealed, single serve packs, so they don't take up much room.

On my next trip, I will try to trim my inventory..... :guilty:

That's a nice complete list! I probably wouldn't do the ladle and spatula though, since OKW has those in the kitchen already.

That's the idea. I'd have "extras" that I'd keep in there so I didn't have to pack them. I figure about 5 days worth of each would do it since we always wash while on vacation.

WOW never would have thought of that ....great idea. I wonder if my dh would think I had officially lost it though. :rotfl: He thinks the Owner's Locker is a good idea but we have not talked about what we will put in it really. So I can see that conversation with my kids. :rotfl2:

WOW I am amazed at what all you guys put in those lockers. Do you have more than one????

Now one more thing........do you all bring this stuff with you, buy somet stuff when you get down there? Do you drive or fly? Thanks

I bring a white noise machine too. I should buy another to keep in my owner's locker. I thought I was the only crazy person that brought that. :goodvibes

Yeah, true, but actually it's the scraper kind not the flipper kind - the kind you might use to scrape out muffin mix or cake mix from a mixing bowl. We like muffins in the morning sometimes, and find those scraper spatulas sure easier to get every last bit out and not have a lot of "waste". Sure we could buy ready made ones at a park bake shop or at the resort - but we don't want to spend all kinds of money on food if we don't have to... so we just bring along a mix from home and can make 'em there.

re cost: Don't DISboard members get a discount?

I'm on a campaign to convince my hubby that this is a good idea. He can be so stubborn about silly things sometimes. Love him anyway.;)
