Ok. Now take this with a large grain of salt because my memory isn't nearly what it was before I had children, but I could swear that either Sheryl or Lori was describing the Party for the Senses and the dress code was cocktail dress. I know Sheryl has been to several of the events. I'm sure she can give you the dress code info for everything.

I'll check but I think Sheryl posted a pic of her & Bob with Brenda & Jay at PFTS and it was casual.

I edited my previous post, check it out....going to Raglan Road!!:goodvibes

Officially, the charge was treason against the king (supposed affairs with numerous men including her brother). The real reason was that she gave birth to a girl after promising the king she could give him a son. By the time Elizabeth was born, Anne was getting older, and the chance of another baby (coupled with her unpopularity with the English people) was small. Henry already had his eye on Lady Jane Grey (who would be the only one of his 6 wives to give him a son) courtesy of her uncle who was pushing the match. Anne was really a foolish girl! If she had been content to be Henry's mistress, she would never have been beheaded. She would have eventually been married off (as all his mistresses were) and her daughter would have been claimed by Henry (although not as legitimate). Anne was very ambitious, though, and wanted to be queen. Nothing else would do, so she ended up paying the ultimate price.

Glynis, please don't me mad at me, but I have to correct some of the things you wrote.

1. Anne was approx. 32 when she was beheaded...not so old, right?
2. It was not Jane Grey, but Jane Seymour, that Henry married next. Jane Grey was the Queen after Henry's son Edward died. She was Edward's cousin, and even though by default as eldest surviving, Mary should have been the next queen, but the privy council rewrote the order of succession. Jane was forced into accepting the crown by her father, lasted 10 days in "queendom" and then went to the Tower, where she stayed until she was eventually executed by Mary Tudor to pave the way for her marriage to King Phillip of Spain.
3. Henry only claimed one child he fathered out of wedlock as his own, his firstborn male from his first mistress...Henry Fitzroy. His other mistresses and their children were pretty much discarded.

Point being, women did not have a lot of options back then. We should be grateful for the opportunities we all have now!

Sorry...:goodvibes

I went to my parents and ate lasagna for dinner.

tomorrow I am going with dd4's class on a Field trip to Disneyland Paris.:dance3:

Wow! That is one great field trip. I am officially jealous. Have fun! :thumbsup2

Glynis -- I am so sorry your kids are sick. The stomach bug is usually quick, so I hope they are better soon. This has just been a brutal winter for illness. Caili was missing five girls from her team tonight (of 16).

My dinner plans changed because I ate my turkey sandwich for lunch. (Have I mentioned that I have trouble resisting leftover turkey? I usually don't have a big sandwich for lunch, but somehow, whenever there is turkey in the refrigerator, I am starving!) I made lemon spaghetti instead. Here's a pic:

You are so right about Jane Grey! Sorry about that. I've been reading about her, and got her confused with Jane Seymour. As to Anne's age, 32 was considered quite old during that time. Most girls got married and had their families by the age of 18. Life expectancy was very short for women at the time.

Elizabeth was also declared illegitimate at the time Anne went to the tower. Her legitimacy was never reinstated before Henry's death. It's one of the reasons that she was frantic to eliminate all other claimant's to the throne (Mary Queen of Scots, included). Yes, Henry claimed Henry Fitzroy. I don't know how many of the other children were boys, but I suspect that there weren't any other male children. Speculation at the time, was that if he didn't get a legitimate son, he would have done some fancy religious footwork to legitimize Fitzroy, but, as you know, that never happened. Rumor had it that Fitzroy's mother was a "true love" of Henry's. He certainly treated her better than he treated any of his wives.

Thanks for the clarification! My brain sometimes gets confused with all the Katherine's, Anne's, Mary's, Janes, etc. that crossed the British "stage" during that time.

My husband and I went to Party for the Senses this past Oct. Highly recommend it. He wore khakis and a button down Hawaiin type print shirt - I had on a skirt - there were all types of dress - no need for formal.

afterwards you can catch Illuminations on the way out of the park. We also went in 2004 - it was excellent both times.

Just wanted to share the new recipe I used for the Rutabaga tonight...not everyones favorite I know, but this would be good on any root veggies!

Curried Rutabaga with Mustard Butter

1 medium Rutabaga cut into chunks (or any root veggies)
1.5 cups of chicken stock
1 Tbs of EVOO
a pinch or two of brown sugar
2.5 tsp of Curry Powder (I just added a bunch as I Loooove it so adjust as need be)
a few red pepper flakes
salt/pepper

bring rutabaga and stock to a boil...add the rest and simmer until fork tender and all stock has cooked down, letting the veggies brown up.

Serve with Mustard Butter

Mustard Butter

(I am awful as I do everything to taste so this is just the ing. no amounts)

1/2 stick of butter
Dijon Mustard
Garlic
Fresh Parsley

Mix and serve along with the veggies

Hey - checking in again!

We had dinner at the Fiddlin' Pig for some clog dancing and yummy N Carolina BBQ. Pulled pork, ribs, greens, baked peas, cole slaw, hushpuppies, etc. VERY TASTY and entertaining!!

Tonight it's leftover roast, carrots, and mashed potatoes. The roasted broccoli ROCKED!! I will definitely be making that again.

WFD at your house?

Good morning,

Dinner at my house last night ended up being a quickly thrown together tuna casserole. Gonna try and do something with ham and asparagus tonight. Those mustard pork chops sound mighty good though!!!
WFD at your house tonight?

Good Morning! I have missed alot and can't catch up!!! I hope everyone is well.

Glynis, Hope the kids feel better today.

Gretchen, Glad to see you back. Sorry your weekend was rough with the roof... Hugs for you and Hailey.

Yep we're going to take the boat to DTD to eat at Raglan Road!:yay:

You know that I'm excited that you are trying this!!! :cool1: :woohoo: :yay:

*********
We are going to WW tonight so I need something quick...I was going to make saucy beef but now I want the lemon spaghetti...so I think I will make that with grilled chicken.

Have a great day all!

That rutabaga sounds really good! I like rutabaga--Laura and I usually puree it and top it with fried shallots.

I was planning on making a California BLT for dinner tonight since I'll be vegging in front of the TV (Yes, I watch American Idol. It is my most terrible vice.). But, everyone's been cooking that lemon spaghetti and raving about it, so I think I'll make that. Probably. I'm thinking about stirring some arugula into it. Those of you who have cooked it, do you think that would taste good?

Off to the old office grind!

I agree, that rutabaga sounds great, but I'm the only one here who likes curried anything.:sad2:

I'm trying Glynis' Lemon Chicken and Pasta tonight with Lemon/Parm Broccoli.

WFD- if we have appetites tonight, which we haven't..I am thinking a Mrs. Budd's Pot Pie and some peas.

Ann

Sorry I've been MIA again--spent the weekend volunteering for the Little Rock marathon, so no time for anything else. Last night was baked spaghetti; tonight will by Glynis' pot roast, if I can ever get it in the crockpot!

I'll check but I think Sheryl posted a pic of her & Bob with Brenda & Jay at PFTS and it was casual.

See, I told you my memory isn't what it used to be. ;) I think you and Johnny will really like Raglan Road. The atmosphere is fabulous and we had a blast! Honestly, I booked it because my parents were going on that trip and I thought my Dad would like the step dancer. He loved her, the band and the scotch flight. And he said the bread pudding was the best he had eaten since his grandmother passed away - about 50 years ago. Our dinner there was one of those vacation memories I will treasure for a lifetime.

I'm so glad to hear that. Now if I can just talk my DH into going during F&W, I'm half way there.

Gretchen, Glad to see you back. Sorry your weekend was rough with the roof... Hugs for you and Hailey.

Thanks, maybe just one more weekend and it will all be done. This is one of those trade-out situations, so we only get him on the weekends. But we only had to pay for the materials, so I can't complain.

Me too, sister. I feel your pain.

Ann

Ann, I hope you are doing better this evening and all of you feel like eating.

Glynis - I hope everyone is well at your house this morning.

Laura - That spaghetti looks wonderful. I would love to make it, but my family isn't very fond of citrus and I would probably have to eat all of it myself.

Aimee- Glad you are having a good time. Gotta love a BBQ sandwich dripping with cole slaw. Yummmmmm.

LaurieG - The pork chops are kind of a throw together thing too. Even figuring the time it took to trim and slice the pork tenderloin, it was in the oven in less than 20 minutes. If you bought pork loin chops already sliced, I'd bet you could shave another 5 minutes from the prep time. The whole dinner was ready in less than 45 minutes.

Kenny is eating last night's leftovers for lunch and requested that I make roast today. So that is in the crock pot and if he remembers to turn it on before he leaves for work, that will be tonight's dinner with rice, gravy, and black-eyed peas. If he doesn't remember (like last time), the kids will probably end up with Burger King and I'll pick up sushi for us.

Hope everyone has a great day!

I think it would. It was fabulous plain, but some arugula might be good!

Well, the flu is still with us. Katie and Leslie are still down. Leslie really feels ok, but has a fever, so I'm keeping her home. Katie is down for the count; sore throat, tummy ick, coughing, fever, etc. She's just miserable. Hopefully, she'll get some sleep and that ought to help. She hates to nap, though, so I really don't think she will.

Dinner tonight will either be spicy crockpot chicken or tortellini soup. Both sound good to me, so I'm letting the sickies decide. Got all the ingredients for either, so I'm good!

Could I ask for some good thoughts, prayers, etc? My niece, Carissa, has been in and out of the hospital for the last few days. They thought she had pneumonia, but last night discovered lung embolisms (?). They are now really concerned about her heart. Carissa is 22 years old, and has Down's Syndrome. Her parents know that she's not going to outlive them, and this really has them scared. She's such a ray of sunshine for our whole family. If you could send any good thoughts her way, I'd appreciate it!

( i watch AI as well..don't worry you are not alone in getting sucked into watching that one ;)...
That lemon pasta does look sooo darn good..i might need to try it next week..we had our big pasta dinner last night ( and some for lunch today..)

Tonight I am going to marinate and grill some chicken along wtih some roasted taters. We got one of those Aerogarden things and Last night we used some of the basil and tonight I will use some of the chives to season the potatoes with...its so convenient, and nothing like using fresh ingredients :thumbsup2 ..i will serve a salad alongside as well.

Finally Sheryl, I have a minute. Here it is (such that it is). It's kind of one of those throw it together things, so I'm going to post it like I make it and you can feel free to change it to your tastes.

Baked Mustard/Brie Pork chops
2 lb pork tenderloin, sliced into 1 inch chops
dijon mustard
approx 1-2 tbl olive oil
seasoned salt
freshly ground pepper
1/3 cup flour
thyme
Italian bread crumbs
2 minced garlic cloves
1 tbl butter
3/4 lb brie, slightly softened, rind removed

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat one or both sides (your preference) of the chops with mustard. Heat olive oil in saute pan over medium-high heat.

Combine flour, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl. Coat chops with flour mixture and brown on both sides. When browned, put in a shallow baking dish that you have sprayed with non-stick spray.

Top chops with brie. You don't have to be precise, it's going to melt. I just kind of dot the top of the chops with brie chunks.

Melt butter in a small bowl. Add bread crumbs, garlic and thyme. Sprinkle this on top of the brie and chops.

Bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until done.

Easy, easy, easy. My husband calls them "stuffing chops" and between him and the 12 year old, there are three small medallions left for his lunch tomorrow.

Thanks so much! They sound really yummy!

Finally caught up!

Yup, the flu has hit our house. Today, both she and Katie are down with it! Luckily, there was no school today, so they are not missing anything, yet. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

I can't wait to get to England in June, and show Katie all the places she's heard me talking about!

Glynis, Glad to see you around! Sorry that the bug has hit your house! Don't worry June will be here before you know it!

WHAT????? Coat & Tie for what events, because that ain't happening with Johnny either. We're probably going to do a Party for the Senses and a few pairings if we get lucky, hopefully those don't require coat & tie.

Yep we're going to take the boat to DTD to eat at Raglan Road!:yay:

Kathy, No coat or tie for the PFTS! Both times I've worn a casual skirt & dressy-T, Bob wears his docker's pants & a short sleeve polo or button down shirt. The pairing are usually during the day & thus pretty much park wear. We won't be doing the PFTS this year. So I'm hoping for a Signature Dinner or Exquisite Evening. I'll have to go find out the dress code for those. Bob would not be pleased to wear a coat, but I think he could be persuaded.;)

Kathy, We drove through Port Orleans this last trip. (That was only 2 weeks ago & it feels like forever already!) It's really pretty, SIL stayed there her last trip & loved it!

Gretchen, I wish I had kept my original ressie's for OKW. SSR was nice, but way too large & spread out. We drove through OKW again, just to compare & wish we had just gone with that. This F&W trip coming, we'll be back at BCV though, which for me is better than Home!

Here's last night's Cuban meal.

Cuban Black Beans I served with brown rice (trying to eat healthy, right;). I topped it with an onion, bell pepper, cilantro relish. Latin style slaw and mango salad. DH's nixed the combining of fruit in the salad. Although I did put cilantro, a teensy bit of jalapeno & onion with the mango mixed with guava jelly & lime juice. He liked it too! So I think next time I just won't ask & fix it.

Here's the pic:
IMG_0396a.jpg

Oh & of course we just had have a Mojito to go with our Cuban Meal!
IMG_0395a.jpg

This was going to be a Mango-Mojitos. After I had already made the mango salad, I cut into the 2nd mango & it was all brown inside. Would not have made for a very pretty cocktail.
