Spaghetti Bolognese - and I'm soooo hungry

We're not eating until about 11 tonight.... We're having takeaway pizza as we're travelling.....

I've spent most of the day (the third on the trot) preparing our en-suite bathroom for decoration. It's folly to be starting it this close to Christmas, but I really can't put it off any longer, especially as we have guests for Christmas who will be needing to use it.

That meant we didn't stop for lunch and so an early dinner was the order of the day. Earlier this week, I decided to do a dumbed down Thanksgiving Dinner. The girls have gone to Wales to visit their Dad's family and so it was just Matt and me and it's thereforer safe to say it was never going to be a bountiful feast in the true tradition of Thanksgiving and neither were we going to be surrounded by family and friends, but it's just nice to have something different for dinner once in a while.

Our menu was stuffed turkey breast, mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon butter and green bean casserole (recipe courtesy of Susan Veness) and turkey gravy.

As it was just the two of us, we invited some American friends at the last minute, but they didn't make much of a dent in the food. Incidentally, I have to say I was extremely dubious about the green bean casserole - it's not a mix of ingredients I would ever dream of putting together - but I'm nothing if not adventurous. Even though it was a strange concoction, we both loved it and will definitely be making it again. With some crusty bread, it's a supper dish in itself. I used Gruyere cheese which I shredded with a vegetable peeler rather than grating and, as well as mixing some in, I layered some on top before sprinkling over the fried onions - that gave it the stringy texture Susan said it should have.

Matt went along with the whole thing on the basis that it means (in order to comply fully with Thanksgiving tradition) he can now spend the entire evening watching NFL games.
