What's blooming in my garden this week?! (Glad you asked!)

I was lucky enough to have a weekend at home last weekend. Something that has been few and far between for me lately. I spent some time on Sunday dead heading my centranthus, coreopsis, pincushion flowers, and salvia that are all in my main garden. I still need to dead head some plants in my patio garden - but that is going to have to wait. Friday evening and Saturday morning I took some time to "stop and smell the roses" and updated my pictures for where the garden is at this point of the summer (I keep a photo journal organized by time - really shows the progress of the garden through the seasons and is a great reference when doing mid winter planning - to remember what worked and what didn't).

Do you remember the red verbena I planted in my new garden beds? Well, it is really taking off now.

It is mixed in with some blue bedder salvia which is just now beginning to show some good color. I will try and get a pic of the whole bed in bloom a little later when the both plants are blooming together. Behind the red verbena is some marguarite daisies:

It adds a nice accent to the blue and bright red in the front of the bed and adds some height. Next to the daisies are some monarda plants. One is white and just about to bloom, and the other is pink and has been blooming for over a week now.

The other "NEWS" is that the roses are all in bloom (FINALLY). This is the latest I have ever had them bloom. The new Blaze Improved climber is really taking off this year. It was a new plant last year.

The other "climber" American Beauty is in full bloom now too. The clematis that normally climbs amongst it is blooming but not as high up as it usually is... due to my DH's "accident" with the can of paint that pretty much set it back for a while. I am just glad it is alive and blooming! Anyway, here is the coral beauty.

I have been cutting bouquets of roses, mixing them with some yellow coreopsis and gallardia... and adding sprays of baby's breath - of which I have a big patch growing!

In the main garden the spiderwort is blooming prolificly. A real mainstay in my different beds.

Now, for my plant of the week. HOLLYHOCKS! They are just now beginning their summer bloom. I love the old fashioned colors of my stand... burgundy, peach, lemon yellow... and reaching towards the sky.

The other little gem blooming right now is my burgundy gallardia. They add some beautiful color and large blooms to bouquets.

Well, there are other things blooming - but I will stop (for now). :)

How very lovely!

I am SO jealous. I never even got any annuals in the ground this season! But, as always, I enjoy your beautiful photographs of your beautiful gardens. Thanks, DixieDee, for brightening up my night.

Tuli - luckily for me most of my garden is perennials so that even if I am late getting started - I have something to work with! I do choose varieties that are hardy and have long bloom seasons - so I get lots of color with less maintenance requirements! (I am a very lazy gardener) ;) I was VERY late getting my annuals in this year - and am having to wait a LONG time for them as a result - so I totally relate to your post.

If you look at the picture of the spiderwort you can see the things to come very soon. Liatrus is right behind and to the right and are just getting ready to bloom. Behind and to the left is the various coneflower stand... including a bunch of purple conflowers as well as some rudbeckia. They and the russian sage (in my side walkway gardens) are the mid to late summer beauties.

Hidden among the other flowers (I did not get pictures of these) are my evening primroses - both yellow and pink varieties, and my crimson monarda. They are really beautiful right now.

Thank you Dixie, for your gorgeous pictures!! :D :D

I love the American Beauty rose, what a beautiful colour! My one rose bush is the regular Blaze, and it's doing well this year also.

You keep a photo journal? I wish I was so organized, that's a wonderful idea! :)

how lovely - thanks for sharing!

DixieDee - That's part of my problem. This was the year, inspired by all my Garden Thread buds, that I was going to plant more perennials and get my yard into, if not a showplace, at least a prettier place. Not only did I never get around to doing all that, I never even did the annuals. Big sigh. I'll just look and admire your photos.

I am going to use your garden as a learning tool, however. I would also like hardy and long blooming flowers. So, I am taking notes. :D

Maleficent2 - You can bet money that Dixie will post progressive pictures. I think she was the original Perennial Picture Posting Person to our last year's garden thread. Well, if she wasn't the first, she had the most photos -- all beautiful, like out of a book.

Ohhh.... I wish we all lived closer... what fun it would be to help you tuli with your garden make over! :)

Oh Dixie your gardens always look beautiful and bring a smile to me.

It's been one of those years where mine have been dreadfully neglected . With the drought, then the rain plus a few detours along the way and this past weeks 100 degree temperatures now more major drought. Who been gardening. I still have about 5 yards of mulch to spread. Some of life's hurtles, glad I still can jump a little.

I'm with you on that one mamu. I have been doing "jack rabbit" gardening alot this year.... neglect due to commitments or travel ... then a bunch of stuff trying to catch up... nothing because of a crisis or two needing my attention... then run like mad to try and catch back up. The cycle keeps repeating itself. Wears a person out and doesn't quite get the same results as steady loving attention. Can't be helped though. I am always amazed how much I can accomplish on one of my "run like mad" weekends though. LOL!

Hugs mamu. Your garden will flourish with whatever love and time you have available for it this year. Wish I could come spend a day helping you - and offer a real hug as well.

I meant to do this before catsrule, but I forgot......Welcome to the Garden! :)

Just one question, is Simba, as handsome as he is, a house cat? lol ;) :)
