Since I'm not a big hardcover book fan when on vacation, I need to find a good paperback. I'm not big on romance novels or anything too scary or weird (ie. Stephen King) but I do enjoy suspense. I have read most of John Grisham and Michael Crichton but wanted to know if their latest in paperbacks are what I'm looking for.

Has anyone read King of Torts and/or Prey? I am an avid reader but I'm also a big people watcher so if the people are more interesting than the book, I will not be reading ;)

Can you help me out with your suggestions?

Davinci Code? It is pretty interesting a little intense but not weird and it is a mystery as well.

I love to people watch but I also read some on the cruise as well...there is just nothing better than sitting on deck with a boat drink in your hand reading a novel in the sun (in my opinion!)

Sandyrella,

I've read the King of Torts and I enjoyed it. His books sometimes run together in my memory but I think they are great vacation books...not too much brain strain just fun reading. Let me know if you have any other suggestions...I'm a bookaholic especially on vacation.

Lee Ann

I enjoy Stephen White. His novels revolve around a muder of some kind but the lead character is a psychologist so there is always a twist to the plot. They have quite a bit of detective work in them too.

Sandy..

Since you like suspense books....I have three for you.

They are by a local author that lives here where I do on Hilton Head Island...and they take place here in the Lowcountry.

The author is a woman...her name is Kathryn Wall. The books are a series about a woman named Bay Tanner. The first one is
called IN FOR A PENNY, then NOT A PENNY MORE and the
third one(it is a hardback) PERDITION HOUSE.

You can find them at Barnes & Noble and Waldenbooks.

I think you might enjoy them.....
Let me know if you get them and what you think of them....

I like Elizabeth Peter's books. Her heroine lives at the turn of the century and is an archaeologist from England. Start at the first one--Crocodile on the Rive Bank. Amelia is a "modern" woman in Victorian times.

Love Elizabeth Peters and Janet Evanovich. If you haven't read either of them I'm not sure I would take them on a vacation, they are really hard to put down. I know I would plop my butt in a lounge chair and wouldn't get up.:sunny:

Just finished the King of Torts and it was very much a typical Grisham book; a good read, interesting and if you enjoyed his others you will like this. I did.

I also just finished the DaVinci Code and found it facinating. I also really enjoy all of Nelson DeMille's novels and have a whole stack, so if you are interested I can send them your way to look through.

I also recently finished "P is for Peril" which was my first into that series; can't think of the author's name. It was good, suspensefull without being scary beyond belief like Patricia Cromwell's stories, (which I love but make me so paranoid that I can't stop looking over my shoulder for weeks.)

Clancy's novels are good too, but sometimes are a little lengthy and full of details. "Red Rabbit" (I think) was excellent, but at the begining I had a hard time keeping the Russian character's names straight!

Just some ideas....

Sue Grafton?? I'm just starting her series now... I read Janet Evanovich's series... starting in July and finished them up on the ship.. I took FOUR books with me and finished all of them..... I can't wait for the next in line.

Marcia Muller books are good. Also you might like Brad Meitzer. He has a new one out now that isn't in paperback and I havn't read it yet The Zero Game. His other books are Dead Even, First Counsel (very good), The Tenth Justice and The Millionaire. His are always good page turners.

I have listened to some of Lisa Scottoline's books and they were enjoyable as well.

I haven't read a book in probably 12 years (not something I'm proud of- just think I've developed Adult onset ADD!!! ;) ) Anyway.... I was forced into buying a book in January as I sat in the lobby of BWV's waiting for our room to be ready. I went to the little store inside the hotel and picked up Prey. Much to my surprise, It held my attention and I actually finished it in 3 days! It is very exciting and suspenseful- VERY hard to put down once you start! I'm looking for more books like this! I say get it! I'm hoping I can find some more like this so I can learn to enjoy readin all over again.

The entire Mitford series by Jan Karon -- easy read and six good books. It's about a small town and their pastor -- I highly recommend for the cruise.

I like the "cozy" (no blood and gore) mysteries by MC Beaton
There are two series. One is the Hamish McBeth series that take place in a small Scottish Village and the others are the Agatha Raisin Books that are in a cotswold village.
These may be a bit tame for you.
Something a bit darker are another series by Elizabeth George.
The first one being "A Great Deliverance"

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions. I have heard of many of the books mentioned. I plan to go to our local bookstore soon to make my pick. As someone mentioned....something with no brain strain is perfect because combined with the people watching and Konk Coolers, I don't want to have to exert any mental energy on my reading materials;)

Keep the suggestions coming.....

Timeline was a fun book and I love Grisham but his most recent is not in paperback. There's also the 1st 4 HP books

Here's another vote for the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I couldn't stop once I started. Very easy read!!

Can anyone tell me if Da Vinci code is out in paperback yet? I saw it at our local Costco in hardcover so I think it may not be out in paperback yet. Bummer cuz it looked really good and I was leaning towards getting it.

Also, does anyone know if it would be appropriate reading for my 13 yr old DS who really enjoys Michael Crichton?

I don't think so. I don't have a 13 y.o.- mine are younger. I am not sure what is appropriate -I can tell you this:

there are long discussions about the Christian religion and the early church. Christ being married/ having a child. A huge conspiricy to cover this up. There are references to ritual sex (it does not get too graphic- but they talk about it none the less). It goes deeply into the symbolism of Da Vinci's art. It also has some numerology and goddess worship stuff in there.

Someone on this board once suggested "Cruising for Murder" by Susan Sussman. I read it and it was pretty good- an easy read. I checked it out of my local library.
