What would you wear?

Sometimes the style of the invitation can be taken as a guide to the dress code e.g a very fancy, stylish, expensive-looking invitation would be an indication to call your butler to crack open the safe and dig out the diamonds. Just don't wear white!!

Agree with many others, the venue being a barn says nothing about dress code. I have been to only one barn wedding, and it was quite a dressy affair. The rustic backdrop only added to the cool ambiance.

It's too bad the couple didn't give any guidance as to what they wanted, but you could always ask them or someone close to them who is in the know. Either way, I think leggings are too casual for any "event" !

Barn weddings are trendy now in some areas so what you are thinking of a barn wedding might not be what it will be, a sundress like others said can go either way so it's a good choice. Maybe look up the venue

I have a very, very part-time job that's wedding related. It seems to me MANY weddings are in barns these days -- but that doesn't mean they're ultra casual. Based upon what I've seen:
- No to the leggings idea. Much too casual, and if you're talking about spring/summer, probably too hot.
- Yes to what many posters have said: Sundress or other casual dress with a wedge heel or sandal for women /khakis and a nice shirt for men.

Exactly. DD got married in a very old factory building, in an industrial area of a small town - it was a very nice affair but we put Semi-Formal on the invitations to make sure guests knew how to dress.

I’d wear nice black or white pants and a nice top with low heels or sandals. Last barn wedding over t to had a lot of long dresses and sparkly tops.

another vote...

For asking the bride what attire is appropriate.

DH and I have been to a couple... thinking about it ... really a few weddings in an outdoor setting...

One was in a barn, it was fall in the mountains... Everyone wore jeans, and boots

Then one at an event location that they called a barn... which had to be the fanciest barn I have ever seen... It was black tie...

Another at the lake and it was a pole barn... and it was in the middle of summer and we all wore shorts, and swim wear and spent the day boating , swimming, and eating BBQ...

Lots of beach weddings, and even one in the woods

I feel like if they wanted everyone to be super casual, they would’ve said so on the invitation.
I think so too.

There is no venue to look up. I still say check with the couple. Their own farm, their barn. They may be setting up a picnic. Or they may have transformed it into a banquet hall. No one here knows.
Yes, I think people read "barn" and are assuming a barn wedding venue. Those have a wide range of how formal they can be. There is a "barn" near us that is actually the most formal and most expensive venue around.

Since the OP said the wedding is at "their barn", I would think it's not going to be that fancy (since their own barn won't be renovated and as clean as a venue) but you really never know. We had our reception at my parents' farm. It was a formal evening wedding at a church followed by a formal reception in rented tents on the lawn (not in the barn). But we had a second reception the following day (also at the farm) that was very informal with a bonfire and fireworks.

If this is normally a working or storage barn that they are clearing out for the occasion, then I *really* would not wear black, especially not a black knit. No working barn is ever completely free of hay dust, and black knit will attract it like a magnet. Also, real barns are usually hot; they depend on the doors and ceiling vents for air circulation.

While I don't think you need to really dress up, I'd avoid dark colors for both those reasons. Ask the couple's family what kind of clothes the guests are anticipated to wear.
