What would you serve at a luau?

Friday night is "Friday Night Date Night" at our house. We have a 4-month old baby - my DW is nursing so she gets the bulk of the duties - so I try to make sure I cook something or come up with some kind of "stay at home" date on Friday nights.

This week the theme is Hawaiian luau. Why? Because I JUST CAN'T TAKE THIS COLD WEATHER ANYMORE!!! ;) :p

I picked up some grass skirts, leis, an inflatable palm tree, shell necklaces, some kind of weird straw hat, champagne glasses with pink flamingos as stems, parrot decorations to hang from the ceiling, a couple of gaudy Hawaiian shirts, I burned a CD with Hula music on it... (I'm really trying to leave her speechless with this.)
Anyway, I got all this stuff, and I realized I had NO IDEA what to cook!
I'm guessing poi is all but impossible to find in New Hampshire. I'm thinking along the lines of maybe terriyaki chicken with pineapples. But that's where I run out of ideas.

What would you suggest? I need ideas!
(Can you tell I have cabin fever? Will this winter NEVER END?!?!)
Thanks.

I'm thinking some kind of pork and pineapple? Sounds like fun. You are a real sweetie-pie. Your wife is lucky.

Ok to be honest I would just forgo the traditional luau foods and just think along the lines of Tropical.. What would you eat on the beach in the sweltering HOT HOT Sun. Make some coladas and lots of foods that will keep you cool. Turn up the heat if you have to. THINK HEAT AND HOT HOT HOT..Hope this helps

First of all, as a new mom, I think that what you're doing is wonderful. I'm sure your wife appreciates it.

I agree that tropical foods are more important than real luau foods. Poi is yucky, and the 2 of you would never finish a roasted pig. :) Terriyaki chicken is a good main dish. I'd probably serve it with a tropical fruit salad. You could also make some virgin tropical drinks. For desert, either coconut cake or pineapple upside down cake would be great.

First off Chef Billy--LOVE your avatar!! Was just having a conversation last night at work with a colleague that there is nothing left on radio for us 'grown up punks' to listen to! ;)

Secondly, ditto what Kermit said, what you are doing is a great thing.

Thirdly--I think anything tropical-y (is that a word) or carribbean or Luau-y is good. Poi is yukky. Terriyaki anything (beef, chicken, pork) is good. Pineapple (with caramel dipping sauce, a la 'Ohana) Rice is good.

Have a ball!!!!

I have no advice. Just wanted to say that I think this is the sweetest idea I've seen in a long time. What a great thing to do :)

ChefBilly, I was ready to rescind your membership in the man club (just like Zurg....), but you redeemed yourself by running into a fundamental flaw. Clueless on the menu was your saving grace.

There's hope for you yet!

Buz

How about a nice Mahi Mahi with a coconut shrimp appetizer and lots of Pina Colada.

Hye Buz--by having such a great menu option, what does that do to your Man Club card? ;)

Not a thing. It is food after all. And I would grill it. So, I think I am safe.

Where's the beer? Points for grilling, yes, that saves you!

Buz, you are tooooo funny.

Jason is on to something. Ham and Pineapple pizza.

ChefBilly, she won't care what you serve. She will remember you did this for her.

Oh, I hear ya!
But you have to give me credit on two things:
1. She does a TON of work with the baby.
2. The last snowfall last year came on May 28. The first snowfall this year came in October. We only had four months without snow this year. I'M GOING CRAZY!!! :p

Plus, it's funny I chose the name "ChefBilly," because I can't cook at all! We just had a lot of fun at Chef Mickey's on one of our trips. Heh.
