What would you prioritize... Insurance or Saving $

Several years ago we didn't have trip insurance for a trip to Hawaii. My kid was seriously ill for 5 days leading up to the trip. Fever, vomiting, the works. Non-refundable plane tickets.

Thankfully she got substantially better the night before our trip. Otherwise we would have eaten several thousand dollars in plane tickets. She was 12 hours fever free when we got on the plane.

A broken leg, severe strep throat, pretty much anything can derail a trip. Having insurance makes cancelling a lot less painful.

The medical evacuation/emergency coverage is why we get it.... I'd be more than happy to eat the cost of the trip if we can't go and save the $$s, but having to evacuate can be extremely expensive! And you may think your employer or credit card will help you out, and then find out it doesn't!

We never buy trip insurance for our other travel, but for cruising, absolutely!

Check your credit cards, too. Especially if you have some kind of travel card, they sometimes offer some protection for some things.
If they do, it could meet your "I'll risk it" threshold or mean you could purchase a different kind of insurance (maybe for less $$).
