What would you pay?

We bought a wooden swing set with a "club house" that is rather large. DH and I can both stand in it and it has a couple of functioning windows etc. Its really nice. We bought it from a Amish man who sells them from his wood shop. We got a great price! Atleast 1/4 of the price of what we would have paid for it in the store. If you are thinking about buying one it may be a good option.

Neighbor wants to sell her plastic toddler swing set. She bought it at least 2 years ago for $450. It has been outside the whole time she's had it, including this past winter with -40 degree temps. I could buy it new today for $355 after rebates. She asked $225 originally on a FB garage sale site. I offered $150. She said no so I told her if she decides she will take $180 to let me know. Now she has it on our neighborhood only site (which has a limited audience for toddler swingsets) at $200 firm. I think she's trying to send me a message. Would you pay $200 for the swingsets?

Yes, I will pass over $20. I actually think I should have stuck to $150 now that I've done more research, but since I said I will go up to $180 I will honor that.

Some people are SO weird about their used stuff. I wanted to buy a large Pottery Barn Kids rug from an acquaintance. She wouldn't go lower than $300, I wouldn't go higher than $200. I ended up buying someone elses (same size, store, design) for $50 and she still has hers.

When our oldest were 2 and 4, we bought a $500 wooden set from Toysrus, which they very quickly outgrew. When our twins were born, we bought a big set (Rainbow), that was worth every penny. Lesson learned.

ETA - we had tons of toddler/preschool friendly plastic stuff in the yard - climby thing, play house, cars, etc., but we either bought them cheap at garage sales, or they were donated to us. I can't imagine spending hundreds on stuff that is outgrown in a couple of years.

No way would I have even attempted to sell it at the price she is asking.

UPDATE - I got a message today asking if I was still interested for $180. We went to look at it and it's in good shape. Told her we'd take it. Maybe I could have gotten a better deal, but oh well.

My mom is like that and I was like that too until I learned the same lesson that your neighbor learned - NOBODY'S gonna give you almost full price for a used item. I eventually learned to cut my prices down to about 25%-30% of new and let them haggle from there. If it goes too low, I just say no but that's rare anymore. My mom holds onto things until they lose all value completely. Actually, she may still have some stuff that would now be considered "vintage" and the price may start going up now.

Glad you are pleased with the deal your finally got. most of the time in our area, people just tend to pass their stuff on to a neighbor or friend when they no longer want it. Our very nice wooden structure belonged to friends of ours who said,"You move it, you can have it". It was a bit older and had been out for a while but cost a LOT new. We replaced a few things and it is a great set. In the end, the friends ended up helping to move and rebuild it and we treated them to dinner.

If both of you are pleaaed with the price, then the price was right. I have spent more on certain items because supply was scarce in my area at that time. And that's ok.
