It's hard to see but there is a clock in the center and during certain times each hour it chimes or plays music and figures come out like a glockenspiel.
I, too, grew up in So. Cal., about a 30 minute drive to DL and have very fond memories of going there often as a little girl. I can remember sitting at home with my best friend "planning" our day at DL, where we were going to go, what ticket was needed (back in the days when you had coupons to ride the rides...), etc. I loved the Shrinking Machine which used, if I remember correctly, a "C" coupon and was replaced when they added Star Tours.
