What would you have done?

[color=0066ff]Today as I was getting out of my car at the gas station I noticed a 20 dollar bill on the ground. I took it in with me when I went to pay and told the woman that someone had dropped it.
Tonight I told my brother what I did and he said I should have just taken it. He said that the woman I turned it in to probably took it for herself anyway. I just could not take it though. It felt way too weird. I know it was only 20 bucks and not 100 but it felt like stealing to me. I once even found a five dollar bill in a parking lot and turned it in.
Anyway, what would you have done?[/color]

Hmm... I don't know. I think you did a good thing. My mother found like $300.00 at Dollywood (She was working there and cleaning in the bushes and found it). She turned it in and went back to inquire about it and find out if anyone had claimed it (she would get it if it hadn't been claimed according to their policy) and the man who she turned it in to never wrote it down that it had been found and turned in. We feel sure he kept it. So, if anyone called and asked for it, everyone would have said no, no money has been turned in. Mom was certainly upset because she knew this $ was probably someone's hard earned vacation $. After that happened, I feel a bit differently about turning it in. Of course, Mom did the right thing. The person, who kept the money,will have to live with him or herself. Mom wishes she could have told the man(who she turned the $ in to) that she found the $ and if anyone called about it they could contact her.

You should have turned it in but written a note stating you found it- when you found it and whom you turned it into. Then gotten the attendant and a witness to sign it.... that way if nobody claimed it you had proof that you turned it in and you would have gotten it.... also proof to a supervisor of the attendant that you turned in some money....

My mom, 82, lost about $20 at our local grocery store. She is notorius for not keeping her purse clean/or closed up. She walks away from it too.

$20 to her is like $100 to us. She kept checking back at the store to see if someone turned it in. Finally about 4 days later, the clerk told her someone turned it in.

I guess their conscious got to them, and they gave it back.

$20 could make a difference between food/ and no food people.

I would have asked around if anyone dropped money, then I would have put it in the Sunday collection plate. Anything over that amount I would have gone through the whole note process and checking back. My feelings are that she probably would pocket the money after you left, but I think you did the right thing.

I think you did the right thing. Regardless of what happened in the end with the $20, you know you can look yourself in the mirror with pride.

Speaking from personal experience:

1) DS was around 12 when he found $5.00 in the supermarket parking lot - he turned it in to the office. When questioned why he did so, he replied, "Because it's not mine and I'm a Scout and that's what I should do."

2) I found $34.00 in cash about 5 years ago in post office parking lot - I turned it in.

3) This summer I found $5.00 on the floor beside the check-out register in Wal-Mart, I turned it in. Not even 10 minutes later, I received my "pay it forward" as my brand new wristwatch bounced out of the cart on the way to the car and some honest man turned it into the service desk.

4) When I was around 8 years old, my Mom cashed my Dad's paycheck and lost most of it at the candy counter of the G. C. Murphy's store. She realized her error later and immediately called in - she was devastated - my parents had 3 small children and lots of bills to pay - some wonderful Good Samaritan found the money envelope and turned it in. My Mom cried and cried in relief and sent the woman flowers.

Now you can understand why I turn money in when I find it.

I found $40 on the floor of madison Square garden on NYE this year. There were about a million people coming and going all over. I bought the next few beers.

A friend of mine found $100 cash on the floor of a movie theater. He left his name & phone number with customer service in case someone called looking for it. After a week, he donated it to a charity. We figured if he just gave it to the people working there, they would just keep it, but by leaving his contact information, the legitimate owner would have a way of recovering their property.
