What would you do?

Being closer to work is more practical, for the most part. You spend more time at work than at shops and restaurants, no?

Having more money in my pocket is comforting to me. The economy still has me very nervous and I appreciate being able to have a little stockpile should anything go wrong.

Do you entertain a lot? I know you like to cook...

If the fancier, more expensive place is where you will spend a proportionate amount of time... then go for it.

It still seems more "safe" to me to take the less expensive place, save up some of that disposable income and then looking at moving into a different place a couple of years from now. That's the beauty of renting, you can move along when you get bored.

The less expensive place doesn't look so bad. A few touches here and there and it will be "your's." ::yes::

I am a bit late replying, life and little league get in the way!, but I always try to spend less and save more on almost anything.

Since we cannot see into the future, the planning for the proverbial rainy day makes me comfortable.

I am not a 'bean counter' by profession, but I have a written budget, and planned savings go into various places so I can rest easy.

Paint is cheap, soap and water is cheaper, and a clean welcoming place with good company will feel like home no matter what you pay.

Hmmmm Didn't think we were so "boring" in the Getting Close thread.
:rolleyes1

Hmph. I didn't start it. :snooty:

Yeah, the 2 places I showed are available immediately, so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be available when I'm ready to move (which will be in the next couple weeks). They're just kind of hypothetical "situations".....but there are several other places in this area that are similar to the places I showed. I'm kind of a homebody, which is why the "bells and whistles" is very appealing to me. And when I'm not at home I usually stay within this neighborhood because it pretty much has everything I like/need. Since I stay in a lot, I normally don't spend a lot. Every few months I'll splurge on something, but it's kind of rare.

Since you're a fellow Ohioan I know you're aware of the current economic status of this area. I keep telling myself to go with a more sensible property, but the glutton keeps wanting to go for the nicer places. :rolleyes1 There are a lot of "cheaper" properties that are in older, dated neighborhoods.....but the good thing about the ones I'm thinking of is that these places have people who've been living there for years and have very low crime rates. I guess the term "cozy" comes into play here.

I've lived in extremely nice apartments and ones that had no frills. I've lived close to work (within walking distance) and currently I work an hour drive away (more than that when traffic is bad).

I personally would rather live in a no frills place that was close to work and provided me the extra income to spruce up the place and to buy new clothes, save for trips to Disney, etc. :) I like having the extra cash. Penny pinching can take a toll after a while.

Frills can only go so far until they're not very special anymore in my opinion.

When we were living in an area within walking distance to shops and all of our favorite bars and restaurants, we found we went the same as if we had drive 10-15 minutes to get down there. Sure, we walked everywhere the first few months, then after a while we were back to normal.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Hmmm, either I didn't click submit on my post yesterday or the mods or dogs ate it. How much do you like ramen noodle?

Being a techy, I'd rather go with the cheaper place so I can afford all my tech toys that I enjoy at home.

Ah see? If you are going to spend much time home, then you do need to create a space that is best for you. ::yes::

You don't need bells and whistles though, do you? Creating a space that says home to you is more about what you do to a space than what the space actually has, yes? No? Maybe? :)

I can understand wanting a nice place to live. Renting a place that is very affordable and then creating your own version of "niceness" still seems more practical.

I love choice B, but if at the end of the year you can't at least contribute to an IRA or 401K for at least 2K and still pay off all your bills and have some other cash savings, then you have to pick choice A.

Choice A) could be very cute if you decorate with stuff from like IKEA !
I'm not sure if there is an IKEA in Orlando?
I get a "gay high" when I go to IKEA !

So where is Choice A) located?

Wishing you Choice B) at Choice A) prices.

But.....but.......
Having bells and whistles is every gay man's right. :lmao:

No.....I agree with you about 90%. It's just that darn kitchen! I loves me a nice kitchen because I spend a lot of time in them. :sad1:

Well, if I get the job I'm hoping I'll be getting next week it'll have a 401k, and I'll actually be able to put some cash away every month for that "rainy day fund".

Choice "A" is actually in a nice neighborhood where I used to live about 7 years ago, about 10 minutes north of downtown Columbus. Most of the homes and apartments are old(er), but the area is very nice and well-kept and I really tend to like the people up there. (The area has tons of coffee shops, bakeries and small eateries.....and for some reason this area has the largest lesbian population in the city. :rolleyes1)

Choice "B" is literally about a 3-minute walk from where I currently live--about a 1-minute drive to downtown and within walking distance to bars, galleries, restaurants and boutiques......that I currently can't afford. (Seriously.......$185 for a pair of jeans??? I don't think so. Maybe in Manhattan....but not here. :rotfl2:)

Unfortunately, the closest IKEA to me is about an hour and a half away. Although I will admit I've gone to the one in Pittsburgh before and had a field day. Don't let me loose in an IKEA or a DWR because you'll never see me again.

I thought it was whips and chains??

Next time you go to the IKEA in Pittsburgh let me know!

Will do. :thumbsup2 They just opened one up in Cincinnati not too long ago, and still haven't been to that one. :guilty:

Lucky for us, I believe IKEA has a new line of whips and chains.

Well I am really terrible with money so I would take B :)
it looks nice:thumbsup2

Thank you for asking this question. I am in the same sort of Boat.

Looks like I am moving to California next month for work.

I will be working in Costa Mesa and Disneyland-Angels Stadium-Honda Center is in Anaheim. Do I go closer to work or Disneyland?

Hope it is OK to use the responses I got to help make my decision.

Good luck with whatever way you choose.

I personally would move closer to work. Having WDW and Disneyland so far away from where I live makes it 100 times more special to me. (Did that come out right? :confused3) I think it's because when you live so close to something and you see it all the time it can lose it's "freshness" and vacation-esque quality. As long as DL is within a 1 or 2-hour drive I'd say you can't lose either way. :thumbsup2

I hear ya man. That is exactly what I am thinking. It is only a 20 min drive to Disneyland if I get a place near work, so I am not gonna sweat it. I figure I will be doing the drive to work at least 5 days a week and the DL one only once or twice (or 3 or 4...HAHAHAHA)
