Ok...so here is the situation. I work in a office, there are 4 people in my office. My office Manager is on vacation this week. The girl who works in our warehouse decides she is going to bring her son to work today. I work for a VERY large corporation and we have many things in the warehouse that her son could get hurt on. And there are times she has to travel to another branch to pick things up and he's not allowed in the company vehicle. So this is not acceptable. In the 8 years I've been here, NOONE has every brought their kid to work for the entire day. He has heeleys on and is just rolling around the office and warehouse. In and out the door over and over again. The other guy in the office and me just can't believe it....

What can you do? What are your options...Obviously she should not have her son there, but he is now, and on Heeley's to bootpopcorn:: popcorn:: ...

Hope your day passes quickly enough, and he has no accidents:)

thats exactly what we are worried about.

Tape him down with duct tape and tell him thats what the boss does when someone breaks the rules. ;)

Who's the office manager's boss? Maybe say something to him or her. Or, if you have security, maybe you could alert security.

Does the office manager call to check in during days off? Can you call the OM to ask a question? If so....you could CASUALLY mention, something like...."Oh, boy, did you hear that? Little Johnny's here with his heelies on, and he just knocked over a stack of pallets! What a cutie! I'm sure the warehouse guys will pick them up. Don't worry about a thing". You know, something like that. You're not tattling, but informing. It is a huge safety concern!

Or, put him to work answering your phones or cleaning the potty. Hey, that's it....ask the OM how child labor laws relate to your work. You could say, "Ummm...not that this is or has happened, but can we make a kid clean the urinals and mop the floor, or does that violate the law?"

Good luck.

I am thinking you need to go to higher up and make them aware of this. This is a huge safety problem and the "what if's" could be awful.

You don't need to "tattle", maybe just make it seem innocent by saying that since the OM is out of the office you wanted to check with them about the situation.

My Branch manager is in another Branch today...no security, we are just a small branch of 4 people. It's a pretty laid back office....but we never had this situation...

I doubt we are going to hear from him this week, he's in Disney...

I'd wait until the OM is back, and say, "It was nice that you allowed so-and-so to bring their child to work with them the other day. I guess we all have times when it's hard to find a sitter." :)

Ok here is another suggestion. Granted he is not supposed to be there but maybe that is the only way she could come to work today. Try to make the best of it. Tell her that he needs to stay seated at a desk or in a breakroom and give him something to do like draw, color, etc. Not sure what his age is but that is all I could come up with. If there is an extra computer put him on playhouse disney.com or something. I have had occasions where my son has come to work with me for a few hours and these things seem to work. Although I work in an office environment and can shut my door but if my DS became a distraction to others this would not fly. Good luck with it.

No she's been leaving him at home all week, he's on spring break....she mentioned yesterday that she thought it would be fun if he came to work with her, and the guy i work with, just looked at her and said that's probably not a good idea.

In that case, that is ridiculous...Not fun for anyone, him included. IF he can be home, IMHO he should be

I agree. There is a huge liability if he gets hurt. You're not tattling when it's a safety concern.

:confused3 so she just figured since the boss is away, she'll do what she wants

at least the OM is smart...he's at Disney!

I would say the bolded part to myself and say nothing to the office manager. Let it go. Yes, it will be annoying, but try to be understanding. If the child is there again tomorrow say something directly to her along the lines of it being a safety concern and a work distraction. If she still doesn't get it maybe it is time to tattle, but tattleing should never be your first response.

If it was a sitter problem that would be one thing, but she doesn't have a sitter, he stays home alone all the time. She just thought it would be fun.
