What would you do? Question about keeping one twin back in 1st grade...

If it were me, I wouldn't split them up. For so many reasons, most of which have already been mentioned. JMO.

My friend has boy/girl twins, born premature, both immature today. The boy is an average student and the girl was held back in second grade, but still has troubles. The kids are very, very small for their age, and with that and the immaturity, if it were me, I might have kept the boy back too.

but in general I don't think it's fair for one of them to repeat a grade if not necessary. And if they're both advanced, one probably won't like the daily comparisons with her twin if they're in the same classes and she gets C's when her sister gets A's. Geez. I don't envy people who have to decide this...

Thanks for responding everyone! I was supposed to have a meeting with her teacher today, but once again...NO SCHOOL!!! I'll let you know what we decide.

Why should one twin be punished when she is making good grades? She should not be held back just because her twin is.

Without reading any other responses- My dh is an identical twin and he says this would have been DEVESTATING to him or his brother. It's stil early in their school career and since there have been some reading issues with the other daughter and since they would be a year behind if they had been born at their due date- I would probably keep them both back. I wouldn't think at this age they view this as a "punishment".

edited to correct; for some reason I thought this was kindergarten.

My ds's girlfriend and her twin sister were both held back in elementary school when only the sister was having difficulties. They are fraternal but look identical. Her parents didn't feel like they could move one twin ahead. They are in high school now, both usually make the A honor roll and seem very well adjusted. DS's girlfriend, however, did think it was important to tell him that she was not the one that needed to be held back!
