I am scheduled to go July 23-26. I found out last week that I have to have dental implants installed on July 21. I am really bummed as this trip I got a great deal on GF for a convention. It is just a one-day event, so I would have three days to myself.

I don't think I could leave on my original date, which is only 2 days after my surgery. My new options are 1) Cancel with almost no chance of going until late 2016 or 2) Possibly change my leave date to the 25th (day before conference) and come back on the 27. I would at least get to be there poolside for 2 days "-)

I am really down, and feel that the trip would give me some relaxation and hope to get through this. I know it is risky. I feel very confident that I won't have much issue as the teeth already have root canals. Aside from pain medicine and antibiotics, I should be good.

I have never had dental implants so I don't know the pain/discomfort with it.

I did break my humerus four weeks before a Disney trip. The location of the break, just below the shoulder ball, prevented a cast. I requested low dose pain killers from my doctor. I was worried about being bumped in the crowds. Four weeks may sound like a lot of time, but I had just started passive physical therapy. I could not raise my arm at all on my own.

I did have a CM ask me why I got in an arm wrestling match with Hercules.

Is the convention on the first or last part of the trip? I would probably go.

What does your dr/dentist (oral surgeon?) say is the expected recovery time for the surgery? I had stage 4 head and neck cancer and before I started radiation, I had to have teeth pulled. There wasn't anything wrong with them, but because of the field of radiation, they had to pull out all my wisdom teeth and the teeth right next to them and they pulled them all at once. Will you be on only liquids and soft foods after, and for how long? How do you react with pain meds? I know what I went through isn't exactly the same thing as you will go through, but am not sure if after getting my teeth done, if I would have been up to traveling. I would talk to your doctor about it and see what his imput is. Only you know what you can handle physically. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. July 26 is the date of the conference, which would be 6 days post surgery. I am not going on rides, etc. just a relaxing trip to be at the pool and do some shopping. I will go the MK one evening.

Thank you for the reply. You have been on quite a journey! Just two teeth will be pulled, they will likely come out easy since they are root canaled already. I will be on soft foods but should be able to eat the same day. I have been on soft diet for 4 weeks now, so it isn't bad. For pain meds, I am usually ok with them. The key is to keep the area clean with rinsing, which I can do. I will talk to the oral surgeon and hope for the best.

any way to do it earlier then? I personally would try to go. Not sure about implants, but I've had crowns and root canals done, but nothing that would stop me from doing anything.

I had an implant put in about a year ago and I know everyone's experience is different, but I remember being surprised and happy that there wasn't much pain. I did have to be careful of the stitches of course, and it was the tooth right next to my front tooth, but I wasn't even prescribed pain medication. I just took Advil a couple of times. I hope you have an easy experience as well and enjoy your trip!

Agree that everyone is different, but hoping OPs will be smooth like yours. My mother-in-law has had at least 6 different dental implants and mostly only has ever complained about the many steps and appointments needed, not any pain or discomfort. In fact, it's the pain of the cracked or damaged tooth that necessitated the implant that she complains about more than anything.

Thanks to all! I appreciate your experiences and stories. I am keeping my fingers-crossed!

If I can have a double root canal 3 days prior to going on my honeymoon many years ago, then you can do it! I was still on anti-biotics when I went, and other than the temp fillings falling out after 18 scuba dives (I did the last 5 dives anyway after doing a check out dive after this happened). This happened after nagging my dentist to make sure the temp fillings were in good (not his fault, as while this is a rare occurance it can happen to divers). Don't let this get you down and cancel the trip. Be aware of what you have to do to take care of the dental work you have done and have a blast!
