What would you do if you started a new job Nov 24 but has a long planned Disney vacation for 5 days Dec 13-17?
Postpose trip or beg new boss for the time? How are calling in sick? New advice. Help before I go crazy.

Here's the real kicker..I don't actually have the job, they will let me know next week but I got this feeling I did pretty well in the interview yesterday!!:Pinkbounc
I would really like this job but I have been fantasizing about my trip all year.

I have always told them when the offer was made of any travel planned, and offered to take the time without pay. That way if they still extend the offer it isn't held against you later. I don't recommend calling in sick, especially for several days. Some employers will require doctor's notes, and view it very negatively if you call in sick so quickly. Depending on when the decision is made you can also offer to start after the trip, although they may not want to wait that long.

You can get to DISNEY any time...........GOOD jobs are hard to find:D . Need I say more. I suppose it has to do with your own personal priorities.

Good Luck,

I would do what ahutton recommended. This way you can feel them out and if it won't work out make the decision then to cancel the trip or not take the job.

I also let them know right at the beginning. At my last job, letting me off for my trip was a demand I made as part of the negotiations (the contract said no vacation for 6 months, so I had them change that). It all depends on who has the upper hand in the negotiations. I like the idea of taking off without pay or starting after the vacation, too.

take the job, but do stuff like pick your nose and scratch youself until they fire you

I actually had a very similar situation. I told the boss about the trip during an informal interview, and he said sure, we could work things so I could go on it.

If it had been my previous boss, I would have probably postponed it. :( But with my current (then-new) boss, he was willing to work with me for it and DH and I got to go. :)

I had a very similar situation at my current job. I started in mid-December and had a trip to visit future In-laws at the end of the month for over a week. I told them that I had this trip planned in the interview and they said that would be fine and worked with me on this. At this point though, I would just tell them if you get hired in and see what they say. I figured for me, if they couldn't allow for a pre-planned trip then maybe they weren't quite the place I wanted to work for.

I recently experienced the same thing, the only difference being is I applied for a job within the same company, so I would be using vacation time that I earned.

I simply told the hiring manager, upon his offer, that I had a planned vacation scheduled for December. He was fine with that, but then again, I have worked for this company for several years.

However, I think most managers would be o.k. with it when starting a new job as long as you are willing to take the leave unpaid. I definately would NOT suggest you call in sick. Just be upfront, but wait until they offer you the job.

well that has happened a few time swith me and I am up front when I get interviewed as far as my vacation plans that have already been made. It is always ok with the new job, I just take the time off without pay, they are happy they save money and I am happy I still go on my vacation. :D

I just went through this. I took a job in mid October and as part of the negotiations/acceptance I made sure they knew about my Feb vacation and agreed to the time off. Just be upfront with them.

One more up front vote my dh took a job in Aug and we wanted to take a week in the fall for a vacation. His contract said he could take one week unpaid vacation any time before Nov 1 or something like that (since he need to accumulate vacation days and of course hadn't)

Thanks everyone. You all gave me something to think about and when they call with the offer;) they I will tell them and we will see what happens.

We've hired people who had a "trip already planned" before they ever accrued vacation time. Those people not only got their "trip already planned" , but also the regular company policy days off.
Good luck:D

I may be facing a similar dilemma next month. I'm interviewing for a new position, and during the interview I am telling them up front that I have a vacation planned for the end of January.

Be straight up with them.:D If they liked you they liked you.

This happened to me years ago. During my interview I informed the interviewer that I had plans for a vacation during a week about 2 months after I started with my friend that worked there. She didn't have a problem with me taking the time off. So it worked out that I got that job. Good luck!

I have hired dozens, maybe hundreds of people. Once a hiring manager makes a choice, a little thing like a pre-planned vacation is not going to make a difference.

On the other hand, a "new" employee calling in sick, esp. for several consecutive days, sends up red flags and makes a bad impression that it's hard to erase. Also, you wouldn't be able to show off any vacation photos :D

This happened to my wife last year.

She switched jobs and had no vacation time accrued. She was at her new job for a few weeks before the trip.

She told her prospective new boss about the trip during the interview so as not to drop a bomb on her if they offered the job.

She told her new boss that the trip was already paid for (and it was) and asked if she could have the time off without pay.

Her new boss had no problems with this.

I would suggest doing the same thing and hopefully they won't be prick(el)s about it.

If you call in sick for a week and come back sporting a tan and Mickey ears, they be on to you like stink on you-know-what.
