we are at the 11 month time to book for next year
here are my ideas--Im looking to see any options or tips on whats the best thing to do

right now we have 82 points that I can bank by end of march we have an aug use year home resort is poly
adding to that our 100 point yearly contract giving us 182 points to use for our trip

wed like to stay a week this time--this year we cut ourselves short--first I was to " cheap" and always like to hang onto as many points as possible so we only stayed 6 nites
unfortunaly I didnt factor in our flight times getting there at 630pm and had a 730am home so we lost time on both arrive and leaving days--usually we have at least half a day on either on those days also the fact that this time we were planning on just a resort stay but did do a park one day--also rented a car and drove to clearwater since my DB and DSIL have a vacation condo there so we spent the day with them--we quickly realized that there were still things we wanted to do but ran out of time

so this time we want a full week which would cost 125 points--of which then Id have 57 left for 2025 trip giving us 157 points--but at some time were going to run out of banked points and have to borrow which Im trying to avoid cause otherwise well run out of borrowing points

which bring us to what would you do

part of me wants to book 6 nites now and at the 7th month add one night and buy the one time use points--I know it would cost money but it would save points

other thought would be just book all 7 nights now and bank the 57 for 2025 and just see how were sitting by that time

also would I have to bank the points before I book the trip or when I book would they automatically take the left ovr points first and then the rest from the 2023 2024 UY then after I book then bank the rest

If I were you, I’d book what I want… and consider buying a resale contract for future trip use. I feel you will continue to have the same issue of wanting to do a slightly larger room or longer trip in the future and need it anyway.

I'd do this.

Your trips take 125 points, and you have 100. You have an extra 82 to bank. You can take your trip for three years with the points you are banking plus the points from each respective year. Then you can take four more by borrowing. By that time, you might be ready to take a year off.

You have to bank your 82 2022 UY points in order to use them to book January 2024 as that is in your Aug 2023 UY.

I would just borrow and not worry about it until you need to worry about it…book the 7 nights now and be done.

With just banking and borrowing, you can do your week for 7 years before you run out. In 7 years, who knows what might have changed. Maybe you'll be going at a different time, maybe point cost will shift a little, maybe your group dynamic will change and you'll need a different size room, maybe something will come up and you'll miss a year.

The other option is to buy a small resale contract at your home resort 25-50 points (same use year!). If it looks like you are going to need 25 more points every year, seems like a good choice. Especially since you can only buy 24 OTU points. 😉 You've got plenty of time to save up for it if that's needed or to watch for the perfect contract in your resort and use year.
Think about it this way - if you buy 24 OTU points every year at $22 per point in 4-5 years (depending on your resort), you will have spent the same as you would have just buying a small contract but you'd have the use of the contract points for decades more.

Use your own points until you reach a point you need more for the trip you want to take. As mentioned it will be several years and you might find you'll take a year off or will stay at other locations that don't require the same number of points etc. Then you can consider cash stay, renting, transferring points in and so on.
